Simplest, most cost effective, most enjoyable to begin with...just buy some Lindens, say $10 worth.

You can only have $10 worth on the first purchase...and DON'T use the 'Increase Your Credit Link' because it just causes problems. If you see something about a $25 minimum, you're in the wrong place.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I usually buy it in game. Just click where it displays your money at the top righthand side of the screen.

Welcome to SL. You've come to the right place for answers, just be prepared for a little foolishness along with the answers. :)

As far as money goes, Sassy is right. The simplest thing to do is to just buy $10 worth of Lindens to get you started.

Also, you may want to do a search for "money trees". They are setup specifically for newcomers. I think you can collect from the trees for your first 30 days in SL.

If you haven't already, you will certainly hear about "camping". While it is a way to earn money, it's hardly worth the time required to earn the tiny amounts to be gained.

Once you get established there are lots of ways to make a few lindens, building, hosting, DJing (is that a word?) to name just a few.. But those all pretty much require you to at least know your way around..

Like others said, just buy some lindens via paypal or your Credit Card.. $10 US will go a long way toward getting you started.. Do remember that for the first 30 days you are limited in how many lindens you can buy this way.. So don't go on a wild spending spree. ;)

Ladyhawke - Welcome to Second Life!

You'll probably see a handful of advertisements in-world about how to get money. Camping, filling out surveys, "Click me for 1L" and garbage like that. All scams. You might be able to scrape together a few Lindens, but you'll take hours doing it and your email box will be packed with spam.

Think of Second Life like any other software game or platform or whatever. You'll drop 20 to 50 dollars for a new game, and only play it for 15-20 hours, even if it's good. Second Life has endless possibilities, and $50 worth of Lindens will go a LONG way if you are conservative. 50 US = approx 13,000 Lindens. That's enough to have fun for quite a while. You don't need to rush out and buy land yet. Just meet people, hang out, find something you're interested in and pursue it. If you end up learning how to build or script or whatever, maybe you'll make that $50.00 back. If not, who cares. You'll get weeks of entertainment for the price of a movie. You can't beat that deal anywhere.

The easiest way to make money (just takes patience) is camping. It pays between 5-12L per hour. It will require you to join a group and check on against bot detectors, and you have to be around to do it and you can't walk around while you are doing it either.

I'll recommend two or three good camping spots.

Askar Business Machines (Good if you want to clean inventory while you camp)
Gomorra (This one is just plain cleverly run, but it is Brazilian which means most people there will speak Portuguese.)
Club Eternal (This one pays esepically well. It is at Eternal Creations which is a Christian sim and you have to join their group. As a Jew in RL, I won't do this, but I've seen what it pays and the club and sandbox at Eternal Creations are friendly).

Good luck.

At that rate, assuming you did nothing else, it would take 225-535 hours (9-22 days) to make $10...how is that 'easy'? Or fun in any way?

QFT.

Camp for 8 hours, make less than 100 Lindens. Enjoy spending your US 40 cents. If you had bought $1.00 worth of lindens you would have 265L and it would have taken you no time at all.

The money you make camping just isn't worth it. It's a rip off.

Ann, be nice. It is easy and it is the cheapest. Boring, oooohhhh yeah. Exploring sucks when you're stuck on a chair or pad.

The most fun way is actually hunting for money trees. You can explore and enjoy SL, get to know great people, a few griefers and see the spots that LL doesn't advertise about ;)

*pout*

to the OP... camping with an alt pays for my entire SL experience. however, camping spots are diminishing daily, and bots have taken most of them over, so it's probably too late to try and make a game of that sport.

my best advice, it to simply buy L$.

You can buy 10 your first time, and more the next month, etc. Honestly, I suggest that you think of SL like any other MMORPG.. Wow, City of Heroes, etc.. each of these has a monthly fee. Take 10-20$ a month, and set that aside for buying lindens.

Living in SL, on a budget, can be fun and rewarding.. it will teach you the value of lindens, being able to use them. I did it for my first few months... I remember the day I decided to spend L$5000 in a single night... what a rush!

Do a little camping from time to time.. but don't expect to live on it!

Then, as time wears on, and you know more about how SL works, what people will pay for, what things could be better, or are hard to find.. then if you're the artistic/technical type, you can try your hand at making things yourself.

SL isn't the "magic money button" that a lot of people seem to think it is. It takes hard work, skill, time, and a good dose of luck just to get SL to generate that same $20 a month for you, so you can "break even".

Second Life is entertainment. Treat it like entertainment.. and TRUST ME, you'll be happier.

Treat SL like a job, and it will become one. A job with crappy hours, annoying levels of stress, lousy pay, and (if you're anything like me) an abusive taskmaster of a boss.

I just started last night and am trying to figure stuff out

For finding out how to use Second Life, I'd suggest:

Instead of spending lots of times at poorly managed "welcome areas" run by Linden Lab, do your hanging out at places run by Second Life users.

1. Join NCI, the New Citizens Group, and when you have no particular other place to be, let one of your normal hangout spots be the NCI headquarters in the Kuulah region.

2. Another place to establish as one of your default hangout spots is called the Shelter.

3. There are a number of videos to learn from. Here's the url for one list: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Video_tutorials

4. Learn to use the Knowledge Base.

5. Learn to use the so-called "advanced search" page for this forum in addition to the simple search box.

6. Read or consult the forum sticky threads, the orange-ish colored threads at the top of each forum's thread lists. A new user would start with the one's that sound appropriate at the top of the Resident Answers forum. Be advised some of the info there is old, so if something you read there doesn't seem to be quite right, it might be because things have changed since then.

7. Google or other search engines are often quite effective at finding answers to Second Life questions. Try doing searches like

"second life" how do i get a box off my hand
"second life" play music on my parcel
"second life" "play videos"

and such stuff as that.

8. These forums are a fine place to ask questions at.

It is lacking. It refuses the common words, any words less than four letters and even then when you put in chair, it finds hair too. Oh, wait.. that's the in world search. Applies here too.

A little off topic, I know... but before spending those lindens (however acquired) look out for new resident kits that many creators offer. They're usually limited to your first 30 days, but you can at least pick up a decent (if common) skin, shoes, hair, shoes, clothes, shoes, and other stuff.... did I mention shoes already?

I have a kit in my inventory, although it was last updated a few months ago I think.... you're welcome to a copy if you drop me an IM in-world.

And like others.... sit back and ENJOY :)

You are far better off buying some lindens then using your inworld time actively, to learn and explore. If you do that you'll be streets ahead of the people who spend all their time trying to "make" money by camping. You might wind up running your own shop, creating things you love, spending time with friends - but the time to learn and explore is now.

Search in the forums here is not nearly as good as it could be, that's for sure, but the "Advanced Search" page at /invalid_link.html allows you to search much more efficiently than the simple box search. It lets you search for quoted phrases, for posts or threads by specific users, search specific forums, etc.

Also each forum has a link to search just that forum on the right fairly near the top; this can be quite useful when you just want to look at the stuff in the scripting forum or just the land sales forum, etc.

Also also, it's not quite true that you can't search for any three letter terms; there's a list of allowed three letter search terms. "Sin", for example, is not allowed, but "xml" is allowed. I wonder if one could get a list of the allowed three letter search terms.

I tried to buy some Linden and I did exactly what you said not to. So now I have a $25 credit in my account and no Linden.

I've called Customer Service twice and they keep telling me to try back in 24 hours to buy Linden.

While it appears I can buy Linden now, it wants to charge my credit card and won't let me use the $25USD I already paid that's sitting in my account.

Any advice?

Thank you.
