"Could be" described that way, sure. But changing the definition of a word doesn't change the reality.

As far as I know, there isn't yet a "reality" regarding a psychological explanation for laziness. It isn't as simple as "they'd rather slack from work" (if that was true no lazy person would feel pain or upset at not working, because they wouldn't want to).

From: someone

Again, it's about personal choice. The choice to not test and expectation, the choice to consider other's skills as a reason not to try one's own, etc. With personal choice comes responsibility. It is not up to others to modify thier choices so those feeling down about themselves can feel better.

I'm not saying that any other person should change their choices, only that the world could be better managed to manipulate the choices of those who do feel down about themselves, so that they don't wind up that way. If this seems immoral to you bear in mind that the SL world, as it is, already _does_ manipulate the choices of people within it. You can't create a world that doesn't affect the people within it. The only difference would be that it would be doing so knowingly, and deliberately to the benefit of the manipulated people.

There is a huge difference between lack of equal opportunity and lack of effort.

If one fails to acheive one's potential due to lack of equal opportunity, then that is a social injustice.

If one fails to acheive one's potential due to lack of effort, then that is a sign that the world is operating in a logical and completely just manner.

The problem is that it's very hard to differentiate these two, given that a person's ability to put effort into something can be affected by external circumstances. This is also a philosophical question: if someone put a gun to your head and told you to make effort, you would... so does equal opportunity require guns for everyone?

(Another problem is that it's reasonable that someone could ASK for the gun to be put to their head ("Shoot me if I don't revise, so that I do";) which shows the paradoxical nature of laziness. That ties in with my earlier suggestion, that a forcing option could be added to the client. Another twist is that the gun doesn't need to be loaded, as long as the person thinks it is.)

For example, people who arrived earlier to SL had the ability to define aspects of the world based on how they created them. That doesn't really exist anymore, as there are fixed and established ways in which things are "expected" to work, which are not identical to those early definitions, but resemble them. You _can_ create something which works differently, of course, but it'll be at serious risk of being ignored - and either way it'll be isolated, which is a problem, because an awful lot of non-creator users aren't that passionate about artistic differences and will just go for what is best supported.

More on the names: It doesn't matter what you get stuck with. Once you're in a room you can click on your av and change your name to anything. I'd rather not think of the implications.

:) I actually got in yesterday. I went to Sarah Nerd's island, managed to change my clothes and ditch my hair, messed around with some controls and such. Then I changed my tag to 3Ring Binder and started pulling furniture out from under other avatars. ;) I yawned a lot, too.

If anyone on that service aproaches you saying they are me, Named Darien.Caldwell, or any derivitave other than Darien.Caldwell0, it is not me. Beware, someone is registering a lot of names that don't belong to them.

My avatar name has also been taken. DnalAnabuki in Lively is not the same person as Dnali Anabuki in SL.

So, is someone planning on selling us our names back?

It's all a bit coincidental - I reckon somebody has trawled this forum for names as we are mostly active SL users

I think it goes farther than that. The number of permutations of my name already taking was surprising. There is also discussion of this phenomenon on the NPIRL blog. I don't recognize the avatars there as being forum frequenters but then I don't read all the forums so I may be completely mistaken. Bot?

I wondered about that until I learned you can change your screen name to anything once you're logged in.

I was mistaken; my SL name was available..used wrong Google Account. My SL name is also used for my gmail account. So I was able to be DnaliAnabuki in Lively as well. Whew.

Its not a very impressive place. I think it would have a steep learning curve for most. I found it hard to figure out how to do the room thing and I still can't see my avatar.

I really think Google should work with LL to get some sort of link happening with Google earth..and drop Lively. I don't think its going to fly.

Object animation rocks
07-10-2008 14:30
Go to the Robot Sushi room. Not only does it look pretty good, there are a lot of objects in the room you can interact with. The object animation is really cool. Kicks SL's ass.

Joints haven't worked in all the time I've been in SL. I think it's about time to get them working again. Even then Lively will still kick SL's ass for object animation.

I hope users will be able to make things like that sushi robot.

Gaming the Search Engine
07-10-2008 17:07
I occasionlly search the web to see what new interesting news articles have come out about Second Life.

Just about every new story coming up in searches on Second Life are actually stories about Lively.

As if Second Life didn't have enough to worry about with the gaming of the Second Life search engine through traffic and such. Now Second Life may have an internet search problem on it's hands. I'd have to guess that if any company knew how to game a search engine, it would be Google.

Pathetic !

I started to harvest news about the Lively today...I'm not sure if it's just happens on my country where the Press loves to let clear to everyone that's SL is dead.

But I just read news like "It's the end of Second Life"...ahaha...Oh, yes ! Sure is !

The best argument I read was: Lively is had a differential: No economy, so you dont need to spend money and it's totally free !

Oh, yeah ! That's really good this ! If I remember...SL crushed The Sims Online just for this factor: Implemented a currency.May I'm wrong ?

Orkut is not the main social networking site
Google Talk is not the main instant messenger of the market too
MS Office is much more better then Google Docs

And there is a lot of google products that's not on the number one. However everytime when google launch something, the press start with the same talk and bla bla bla..and The Monster Google will crush the competitor and bla bla bla...And Google product is better because this difference and another..and bla bla bla...And Google it..and Google that..and Google will domain the universe and bla bla bla...And Google created God and bla bla bla...

I really sick to all of this.

The point is: News is a consumer product like any drink.

News about google is easy to be consumed because everybody reads.

I agree, Henry, it's stupid commentary. It is sensationalist yammering that is the equivalent of navel-gazing. It's not a SL-killer (yet, if at all) because it is NOT THE SAME KIND OF PRODUCT (yet) and is a completely different environment (for the time being).
