Building, RP, and visual immersion still appear to be minority activities. I think you underestimate the SL population. Those who really just wanted a packaged chat room left long ago or never get past orientation. The userbase is here because they find some dimension(s) of SL worth putting up with the instability and learning curve. Why else would all these people be paying to basically be beta testers? There is something here that IMVU and other packaged chat rooms aren't providing.

From what I generally see - based on green dot distribution - it's a) music (live or otherwise), and b) sex. I mean... there's always large number of people at the clubs and similar and I can't really think what they'd be doing but chatting just the same as a chatroom. |

Of what little I got to see and have read up on, it is Habbo Hotel with different graphics. You don't make stuff; you get a premade room (though you can pick the colors lol) and premade objects and then play interior decorator. Beyond that it's just another 3D chatroom.

Second Life doesn't have much to fear.

It has a "report abuse" option for objects, which suggests user created content.

Try the Lively Google groups http://groups.google.com/group/lively-help and the Lively Help Center at http://www.lively.com/help/ for possible help. it will get better. Twinity, Vplace, IMVU, etc. better start upgrading their stuff fast. It has scripted objects, and let's you upload music and pictures. From: someone Add and Remove Objects: Can I Create Content?
Most of the avatars, clothing, and objects were created by vendors working for Google. We're also working with a small number of trusted testers, vendors and creative agencies as part of a test for creating custom items.
We hope to enable user-generated content and even more customization soon, but until then we've given you tons of choices from the catalog to help personalize your Lively experience.
You can put multiple image urls in a picture to have a slideshow, or use a Picasa album. You can show YouTube videos . Some objects are animated. You can add hyperlinks to objects. You can add comments to objects. You can move objects around, rotate them , stack them, and stand on them. Doubleclick chairs to sit Doubleclick elsewhere to teleport. Click you av to move it. Control and arrow keys move camera one way, alt and arrow keys moves camera other ways. Getting Started Guide at http://www.lively.com/help/bin/answer.py?answer=87479&topic=13377

The distinguishing feature about Second Life, compared to other 3D worlds, is users' ability to create content for the world.

Lively does not seem to have resident-created content capabilities.

Lively does not appear to be significantly different than the first 3D social world I ever joined, Worlds Ultimate 3D Chat, back in 1998.

But for the brand name Google, I don't think the appearance of Lively is significant news.

Saw no options for creating real custom content yet but apparently it'll come eventually. Though given the scale of the place I'm not certain how creative you can really get. Or what the creation interface would be like.
I think I can see where Google is targeting this. Most 3D chatworlds only have pre-made objects and rooms, a limited number of options and only so much space to explore. Second Life is practically boundless and you have freedom to move around and explore almost any place you want but it also has a big learning curve that many people don't want to deal with. Lively seems intended to set itself right in the center. The usual features of 3D chat, with the option of real content creation that SL offers but not the complexity and learning curve. Your options for creation will obviously be limited, the price paid for simplicity.

Now whether Google can do this properly, who knows.

Hey, great job Google. You've created a gateway drug for Second Life.

Cool as it is... it may be mainstream, it may catch the teenage masses, but it's clearly not targeted to be the deeply universal 3D metaverse that Second Life is.

Maybe they will go after Second Life in five years - but Lively sure ain't it.

I think that Lively will never be a popular as SL because it's way easier to type a bitch about "rezzing" than it is to type about "materialising". "Rezzing" is edgy. "Materialising" is longwinded, pretentious and far less punchy. But... on second thoughts... I'm a pirate rabbit in a huge cowboy hat. I've got a nasty looking hook instead of a hand.. I lok kinda cute. BUT THE WALK!! IT'S BRILLIANT!!! I bounce along I want that walk in SL. We could build the Lively rooms in SL, make the avatars, the lot!

I can't create my own stuff with Sketchup--the obvious choice to not allow content creation with SU is stupid...plain and simple.

I'm bugged by this. I like the web-based, embeddable idea...but Lively doesn't even come close to SL...not for many years will it be anywhere near SL...if ever.
