This argument, if it can even be classed as such, is crass and vacuous.

SL is essentially an unvetted community, where anyone can and will register and explore both Mature and PG areas.

LL and to be frank the SL citizenship in general is shirking its responsibility to protect minors, and as such there is no such thing as a "Mature" area, anyone who argues otherwise is an apologist at best.

I'm completely against censorship in any form in the context of a confirmed and identified adult community. However where we, for our own reasons, decide that the definite exclusion of minors is not worth worrying about, then we as a community lose the right (in my view) to uncensored content.

You can't have both in my view.. you can't claim the right/freedom to an uncensored environment without taking responsibility for the protection of our minors.

Sorry if I'm being a bit belligerent, but this sort of "I'll fight for our freedoms with my last breath, just as long as I can cower anonymously in the corner" b*llocks just makes me a bit mad..:)

How would your critique of Second Life be any different if you applied it to the Entire Internet?

Holding LL to standards that no one else is maintaining is wrong.

Second Life isn't a web site its a bunch of web sites. LL isn't responsible for showing some unverified kid adult content. The person who provided the adult content is.

Thats been the plan from the beginning.

Essentially -
Clicking the "Verified Residents only" box is the same thing as adding a "Enter your birthdate here" drop down applet through some Web Page builder utility.

It's not "killing" - its called "snuffing" - and its psycopathic.
Well, killing is psyco also but you know what I mean.

Ya know, many Hollywood movies, video games, and award winning books have fictional depictions of murder in them (even murders revolving around highly sexual themes). Does that make all the writers, producers, and directors psychopaths in your mind?

Strange to label someone or something "psychopathic" merely because they have the imagination to dream up something extreme. If they =aren't= going out and harming real people non-consensually I don't see how you can call them psychopaths..

Then again, maybe you meant that as a joke...

Violence isn't my thing at all. But wow, this seems totally tame compared to most movies, and hardly any different than lots of TV shows. In fact, I could swear I saw those scenes on "Law and Order" the other day.

Maybe we should be glad that our species, as depraved as it may be, has developed harmless ways for us to vent our violent instincts through literature and media, rather than throwing real people into arenas like we used to. If we can just make all crime and war become virtual, we'll be set.

Well all of the above are really less involved than two people having cyber sex and then one of them taking the other "out" after orgasm. I am not sure if it's ever happened to you but, as I said earlier, it did happen to me - long ago - and I wasn't prepared for it. His IM message following the event was sick. So yeah, films books, music etc, all contain elements of this. Trust me, in my real life I am well aware of what the "arts" provide. Dreaming up something extreme and then role playing it with someone who is NOT aware they are in this role play is ... well, sorry to say it but, it has psycopathic tendencies.

Because you live in the mind of every writer?
How do you know how much "less involved" it is for them?

Don't get me wrong, i think it is improper for someone to 'snuff' you without your consent in a game like SL. i mean, i'm all about respecting the fantasy limits (and real life limit ;) of others). What happened to you was unfortunate...

i've never had that happen to me, no.. not non-consensually anyway. But, i'm very picky about who i RP with and am really clear on my 'limits' first. Likewise, i'm equally as cautious in RL. i've never played with anyone who was so much a stranger to me that they violated my limits like that. (edit again - although sometimes people ya know can turn out to be jerks too)

not saying playing with strangers is wrong or anything, but.. i don't for precisely the reason you sort of gave, it can turn out really bad. i'm not willing to risk that.

AND!

i still want to know where to get that bed. T.T

It's not the animation of killing someone per se: people don't tend to get worked up about the combat sims, or, for that matter, the wall-to-wall murder mysteries on TV. What upsets lots of people is when it gets jumbled up with sex.

Human sexuality is extremely diverse. I can't remember who said it, but, "if it exists, there is porn of it on the internet". There are probably no two people alive who would absolutely agree on what is acceptable, what is beyond the pale and what floats their particular boat. Personally, I don't like "snuff", but I know that there are people who think that lots of the things I enjoy are completely unacceptable. Unless somebody is coming to harm in RL, I refuse to cast a stone.

The OP's point was that this sort of extreme material should not be in-your-face, or mixed in with milder material and so difficult to avoid, and this I can agree with. If I was the OP I think I might contact the store owner and politely suggest that they rearrange their shop a bit.

Oh well, yes, CONSENT has to be the deciding factor. What happened to you is definitely not ok.

There's an animation at Sine Wave called something like "Shoot your foot". Being that I didn't even know Sine Wave made anything other than dances I hopped up to see what this one might be. Also knowing that they like using odd names for their dances. So . . . what was this dance like? It involved an animation of pulling a gun, aiming at foot, the sound of a gunshot and . . well there might be more. It just didn't occur to me that Sine Wave actually would have a "dance" like that right there in the "New" dance section.

oh, and the protect the children rants? Children are not allowed in SL. Adults may play children (with restrictions), but actual minors are not allowed in SL.

Oh, and the Internet is in fact evil. I admit it twisted me in my formative years (ok, how old am I again? I guess my formative years occurred after I was old enough to have passed through those years. I am confused). Not that I show that, much, when I am in SL.

From: Faithless Babii
the moves were not clear at all...i went through the menu not really knowing what most of the moves would be..the one titled "shoot the bitch" yes...it was as simple as it sounded, but given the rest were rather ambiguous i wasnt sure, call me dumb but i genuinely wasnt expecting a shooting animation...i suppose im rather green that way, it just didnt occur to me someone would want that animation in a bed...IF the bed had been signed as such, maybe i wouldve ?
Actually...i wasnt expecting such a violently animated bed to be there at all...I suppose im not worldly enough for SL.

I was shopping...looking for beds & animations..I DIDNT want to participate...thats my point..there were no warnings that it held violent animations at all...

If it's the place I'm thinking of there are a lot of different styles of extreme beds, they all have signs over them describing what they contain and a couple pictures of the animations in use. I believe the bed you're referring to is called the "Rough & Snuff" or something similar. Theres also a huge warning sign about extreme product right at the TP point. Some stuff is even in a room with its own warning sign/door you have to read to walk through. Like I said, IF its the place I am thinking it is by your description then there a lot of signs describing their items and to be warned.

I was lookin for new animations the other day..and wandered into a bed store..they didnt seem familiar and the menus looked nothingl ike id seen before- which made me curious.

Sooo i hopped on one and started working my way through the menu...I was completely astounded when i found it contained such animations as "shoot the bitch" where the male av shot the female and she falls down to the bed unmoving presumably dead. another was "punch her out" a head thumping animation...and on and on...really very violent and quite abhorent to me. I looked at a few other *pieces* whilst i was there...pretty sickening...mostly violent...

Is this REALLY allowed? Im kinda broadminded...but it worried me ...

Fai xx

Yes it is allowed.

Could be a bunch of signs, but if she's like most people, she's not going to be arsed to sit and wait for all of their textures to render.

True, but I believe there was some comment about there being no warning signs.

And what the arsed is arsed anyway? I've always just wondered. Is it like saying fudge instead of another more intense F word, or does it have the exact same meaning as the donkey word (an ass being a donkey)?

I think it's a British thing (I'm not British)

lol - obvious troll is obvious. The real question is whose alt Bartleby the Scrivener is. I have a guess, but I'm not saying, and I doubt he/she would admit it anyway.

As for when freedom of thought and personal responsibility rather than governmental interference in speech and actions was chiselled in as the 11th Commandment, it wasn't. There are still ten. The question is when did the Ten Commandments get stuck onto the Bill of Rights? It seems to me that Bartlebus' 11th Commandment is what we call the 1st Amendment, which also guarantees that we should be free from a governmentally endorsed religious doctrine that would make law out of, ohhh...say...the Ten Commandments.

I'll not be responsible for whether children access the grid or not. I'll be responsible for whether MY children access the grid - which they won't. They aren't supposed to be here and I'm not going to live my life shoving my nose in other people's business. I expect them to stay out of mine.

/me briefly considers shooting someone in the head, then realizes that he could just go do that in any number of better games and decides to settle onto the couch with Sassy and try to snitch some of her popcorn.

It's a common English word for a person's backside. I have never understood the Americans' intense interest in donkeys. :D

In this context, the meaning is "bothered" - as in, "can't be bothered".
