Is it 'lying' to have a realistic profile that is not true?

The existence of a ToS concerning a situation, to be honest, is rather like the existence of a law - it says nothing about the morality, it is merely a practical consideration. If I break a law I may be arrested. If I break a ToS I may be banned. Ethics are not part of it.

(Otherwise one ends up like the bleating ad-farm griefers here, constantly repeating "it's not against the ToS so it's okay!" :) )

Laws and morality don't mix anyhow.

It always ends up being the morality of the majority that get legislated, which is blatantly biased.

Laws should be based on whether the liberty of one person infringes on that of another person.

Or to protect people.

Or in the case of a TOS like in a private place like SL, to protect LL's business interests.

The person saying that they're a fairy princess isn't lying. They're saying, in effect, "none of your business." There's nothing wrong with that, and no one is going to think they're trying to claim to actually be a fairy princess outside of SL. The other person appears to be supplying actual information about their first life. If it isn't true, then yes, they're lying.

In 5500 years no one has summed up the purpose of the law better than Hamurabi of Babylon, who was credited with formulating the worlds first written code of laws. He said that the purpose of law was to "bring about the rule of righteousness in the land so that the strong shall not oppress the weak." He said nothing about furries or cybering with middleaged fat d00ds though.

Well, that's kind of my issue though. They _appear_ to be providing information about their first life but they may only appear that way to you. It's possible that, even since they left Orientation Island, they've been in a city-based RP sim where a thirtysomething cop is a perfectly legitimate RP.

Let me give you another example, which is closer to what actually happened to spark the drama that I was involved in. (Note that the actual drama did not involve furries. I'm just using them as an example of a subculture that everyone knows.)

Here's what happens:
* Some RL furries join SL, and they open a sim for RL furries.
* In the rules notecard of the sim, they say that "only furries are welcome here". But they do not mention the words "RL", "IRL" or anything similar. From their point of view, this would be unnecessary, as they have no connection to nor knowledge of, furry RP on SL.
* The sim becomes popular, but many of the people visiting there are not furries IRL, but are only role-playing them in SL.
* When the owners discover that, they get angry and accuse those people of "lying" - by creating the impression that they were RL furries, by being in the sim. The visitors, on the other hand, argue that from the point of view of a typical SL user, the phrase "only furries are welcome here" does not exclude purely role-played furries.

Which side is justified? Does it matter if the community is not furries, but lesbians? Or Dominants? Or Renfairies?

So if I put "I'm a 30-something Asian-ish type person" in my SL profile (not my RL one) would I be lying if I'm not in RL?

I don't think so. I exist here in SL AS I EXIST. If someone puts in their SL profile "I am a six year old male lion" I'd hardly consider that lying. It is how that person exists IN SECOND LIFE.

The SL profile is just that. It's not lying. It's how that person chooses to represent him/herself in SL. Now if, in the First Life/RL profile tab, if I said "I am a six year old lion" then obviously I would be lying. If I said "I am a 30-something Asian-ish type person" and I'm not, then I would be lying.

So an immoral act in your view is "one that is unpopular"? I don't follow your logic. I'm afraid the ad farmers are right.

If its rp information it would be nice if they labeled it -

"Rp Information"

but thats an etiquette question.

Also something on a profile is not the same as someone telling you in Chat.

if their profile says they are 25 but they tell you in chat they are 22, but they are really 18 ... its the chat assertion of 22 thats the really annoying lie.

Well.. to me the word "lying" itself carries a moral pejorative, and I think it does for many other people too. It means engaging in deliberate, and non-consensual, deception. Role-players don't casually call each other "liars", and if you walked up to an RPer and called them a good liar, they typically wouldn't think you were complementing their RP skills. :)

I love the idea of non-consensual deception, as opposed to consensual deception.

''I lie to my wife, but she knows it, so it's okay."

THis thread takes the cake - or the pie - for utter pointlessness. Cool.

Well, consensual deception is what happens when you're playing Poker. :)

Or get married *BADUM TCHA*

*SERIOUS COMMENT*

Actually, that is what the veil at a wedding represents - it is a symbol of the lies and deceit that women habitually tell men. Hence the symbolism of the bride having her cheating lying face covered up and then uncovering it once the minister declares them married to show that she has mended her wicked ways.

Technically, I suppose that providing any information that you know to be untrue is lying.

But in SL you very quickly learn not to believe anything so, as long as the untruth is not used for fraudulent purposes like theft or whatever, I see no harm in it.

In my First-Life profile I have described my RL as a giant robot and as a pizza.
Clearly they can't be both - one or the other but not both! So now I don't describe RL at all except that they are based in UK (which is true!)

Not exactly. Its a symbol of the lies the church would like us to believe women habitually tell men. The church is not very keen on women. Another reason to miss mass this Christmas.

Sorry, I forgot about how women never use deciet and lies to manipulate men into doing their evil bidding. My bad.

Ofcourse a back hand across the face Gor-stylee normally sorts them out*

*Is it lying if I put this in profile?

How come the man doesn't put his wife's veil as the end of the marriage ceremony?

Since that is when men generally start lying to their wives.

Saying that your arse doesn't look fat is only a white lie. They're allowed.

All we really want is to play Xbox in peace.

Have you thought of taking holy orders? I hear the food can be good. And if you go to Belgium, the beer is excellent.

On a happier note: I've never knowingly done anyone's evil bidding, and if I did it unknowingly, I had a jolly good time doing it. :D

I thought it was okay, except the bit where the restaurant owner eats his wife's lover's genitals.
