Talking - generally G to R. Potentially X to XXX. Depends on how linguistically inclined and talented you are.

I've met a few cunning linguists here in SL.

...Plus, there is the other issue of limited knowledge for body motion. I was invited to poll dance the other night, but I was lost and then very slow in figuring out how to do that. That is where the mentoring comes in.

Dancing in Second Life is MUCH easier than dancing in RL...because it's all done for you, by animations.

Dance poles have the animations build into the pole. Just right click the pole and select "Sit Here" (or the menu choice might be "Dance";). Once you're on the pole, you will usually get a drop down menu that lets you select from a number of different dances.

Some poles are better than others. One of the very best I've seen included animations from Sine Wave, who makes some of the best animations in SL.

[EDIT: Ann, you HAVE one? Ooh! You naughty, lucky, kitty!]

Many poles at clubs won't let you use them unless you're a club employee. However, the poles at other places are open to all comers. The Escort Lounge comes to mind as a very popular place with free dance poles and table/chair dances.

The skill isn't in the animation. It's in the chat. While you're dancing, you are also talking (usually in IM) with the guy(s) who are watching. Things like "/me feels the long slick pole sliding between her thighs as she gazes deep into your eyes and licks her lips." The challenge is to get them to tip you generously, in return for removing as little clothing as possible. If you're an escort in addition to being a dancer, the challenge is to get them to agree to pay your rates to get you off the pole and into a bed somewhere.

If you're on the pole at the Hangout (well, we used to have one. But I think Lexxi took it down) the challenge is to get anyone to notice you. This crew is such a jaded bunch. :D

What is the best place to get good animation and poses? Do they come in a box?

It depends on what you mean. Sine Wave has great solo dances, Bits and Bobs has pose balls for every occasion, Pillow Talk has fabu sits and snuggles built into pillows instead of floating balls. If you're talking modeling poses or ones for an animation override (have we covered that yet?), that's a whole new ball of yarn.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

/me laughing at myself

My new friend Smoke had to show me how to get my new clothes out of the box. I am still having a hard time finding the things that I have bought.
LOL

There are a few good places.. Bits and Bobs, LostDog and Abraminations are someof them.. I bought some things.. (a cuddle!) form Anti Antonelli's store last night.. so he has some good ones as well. Sugarbabes has some for those that like it rough... There are others but LMs are in-world now.

I would suggest for you not to buy any yet.. look around a little and see what you like. Also, don't date anyone who does not have his own set of balls (poseballs people!)

Good luck

.d

Edit: Except dances.. everyone needs dances... Ann is right Sine Wave is the place for those.

The most basic form of the animation is the anim file by itself.

This has a little icon of a running man when it's in your inventory. If you open it, a little window pops up with two buttons, "play in world" and "play locally".

These animation files are also often contained in objects. The object also contains a script of some sort that accesses the animation file, often in response to a menu choice selection by you.

Objects that contain animations include:
huggers/kissers (controlled by chat or by an on-screen heads up display (HUD))
poseballs
pillows
furniture (beds, sofas, hammocks, chairs, etc.)
dance poles/chairs/tables
dance machines (can be a ball overhead, or the dance floor, or something else)
Chimeras (a type of dance machine worn on the person. Other people touch it to dance along with you)
rugs
showers/bathtubs
some wings
scuba gear
parachutes
diving boards
weapons
vehicles
animation overriders ("AOs";) An AO replaces the default stand, walk, run, sit, and fly animations with better ones.

Many of these objects, especially AOs, are editable, meaning you can replace the animations they come with with other animations of your choice.

Sorta, but not like that. There are places that are "damage enabled" and you get a little heart icon at the top of your screen that counts down from 100 to 0, but when you reach 0 all that happens is you get teleported home. The bodies you saw were likely people play-acting by using a poseball that positioned them to look dead.

On another topic... you've said a few things in this thread that makes it seem like you're looking for lots of spontaneous interaction between your avatar and the world, like reaching out and touching things on a whim or pole-dancing in a very interactive way. The thing is, SL is mostly not quite there yet. Any movement you see an avatar make is the result of an animation, affecting all or part of your avatar body, which has been invoked by the use of a poseball or a custom gesture or a scripted device attached to you or your screen.

It sounds like what you're expecting is along the lines of Expressive Puppeteering, a long-term project by Linden Lab that should allow us to move our own body parts with a mouse grab. That feature is generally thought to still be a long ways out though (think months or years).

In the meantime we interact with the world as best we can, and finding cool creative special-purpose animations and ways to use them can be an entertaining journey in itself :)

LOL

Here's a tip.

1. Make a new folder for whatever it is that you bought that came in a box. For example, if I bought a new formal, I might make a folder called Clothing/dresses/gowns/IceBlueStraplessSheath

2. Rez the box on the ground. Right click and select Open.

3. Drag the entire Contents folder of the box into your new folder for that dress. (some dresses or outfits can come with a whole bunch of parts, and this keeps them all in one place.)

4. Right click the box again and either select Delete if you no longer want it, or Take, if you want to save the box and/or any remaining contents. (No Copy items move from the box to your inventory. Copyable items leave a copy of themselves in the box).

5. If there are any parts you don't want, like an ad for the store on a notecard, delete them. Save any instructions on how to fit the outfit, or how to operate the thing, if it has commands for bling or color change or something. I save store landmarks, but I usually move them to my Landmarks folder.

Keeping your inventory organized and trimmed is a contsnt and neverending battle.

I keed, I keed. I never mix business with pleasure.

Well almost never.

Not on Tuesdays anyway.

:D
Pleasure IS my business. And business is good :D

Colette,
I will send you a couple of landmarks tonight. These are two places where you can stop by and ask any question at all and get some honest advice. Newbie friendly places you could say. There may be a few people around that hit on you, but they are only teasing.

I, on the other hand, am very serious about my flirtations. Poseballs are fun and all but I can take you places where no poseball can go ...

or have they warned you about me yet ;)

Allow me to rectify that omission with some brief introductions.

Colette, meet Yosef, one of the Forum Boytoys. He's smooooth.

Meet Trout Recreant, daredevil pilot, reputed con man, certified practical joker, Official Slut Rater and all around nice guy.

Meet Chris Norse, informal Leader. Avowed anarchist, which makes him an easy Leader to follow. He's smooooth too, but Feline has him wrapped up.

Meet Michael Bigwig, android, texture maker, gadfly.

Meet Brenda, Colette, and Cherry, prolific posters and staunch friends. Brenda flies the Huey of No Return.

Meet Oryx, designer of international and ethnic clothing and Supporter of Causes.

Meet Snowman Jiminy, dolphin erectus.

Meet Ann, mistress of the Pie and one of the cutest Nekos around.

Meet Qie Niangao, coin operated boy and wizard scripter.

Meet FD, and Bradley, and Elora and Tiana and Jezabell and MoxZ and Har and Michael Flatley and Tegg (the android 'Roo Overlord), and Lexxi and Love and ClaireNGraph and...oh golly, just a whole crowd of wonderful people and I'm sorry if i left out yournamepleasedon'thatemeimterriblewithnamesandimturningblueandneedoxygennowtyvm.

Colette, meet...

Thanks Lindal. I appreciate the intros. Although I am terrible with names, so when you see me IW, forgive me in advance when I don't remember your info. But if you give me a reason to remember you, I will.

Once again Lindal, I am going to have to figure out a way to...I just don't know. I think I am crushing.

No warnings yet. I think I need to come with a warning too, but I guess that will come in time. I could offer it myself, but that would ruin the fun of finding out.

I have heard of some that does some kind of manipulation with camera angles, but I don't know how well they work.

What is an animation override? I am looking for an adult bev to carry around. How does drunk work?

An animation override is basically just that; it replaces whatever the default SL animation is at any given moment. People have designed all sorts of animations, so that you can replace the default walk with something sexy or studly, the default stands with some that look more realistic, dancing animations, etc.

Many people get what is called an Animation Overrider, or AO, for short. This is a tiny object that you "wear" (usually it's embedded deep in your thigh where no one can see it) that contains all sorts of animations for walking, standing, sitting, flying, etc. When it is turned on, it will replace all the default animations that SL gives to everyone. You can buy different animations and stuff them in your AO to personalize it.

Your "drunk" animation is something that you might not put into an AO. It would be just a temporary animation that you would only play now and then, straight from your inventory.
