Met an avi with a greatly exaggerated RL

I befriended another avi on my main account a few months ago. Even though we don't speak all the time she has been a very good friend. Recently I noticed she changed her SL profile to reveal she's a recording artist (not well known, but signed). I decided to check out the site listed on her profile and found inconsistencies with some of the stories she's told in the past.

Yesterday she sends me an invite to her live performance. It was my first time hearing her voice. Not only does she sound nothing like the singer she claims to be, she sounds absolutely horrible! I notice all the others in attendance didn't comment about the performance - not in open chat, anyway. I think we were all pretty shocked. I have no idea why my so-called friend is lying except for the fact she may be trying to compensate for a dull RL.

So since this is Resident Answers, I have a question for all of you: have you met any persons in SL who greatly exaggerated their RL and you have proof? What did you do about it?

You know what?

When you encounter these people, you do not post a message about them - you just either accept them into your SL for whatever reasons or avoid them. Personally anyone fabricating so heavily is not worth knowing unless they can at least be truthful with you when you are alone.

Adrienne - your friend singing at the live show might very well have been the same girl on the recorded tunes you heard. Many things can be done to a voice in the studio to cover up flaws errrr people who cant sing. Of course if her voice was a completely different timbre then, yeah, it's not her.

When I was in beta at TSO I meant this person who said she was one of the first winners of American Idol. Won't mention her name just in case.
I didn't care very much either way nor very interested either way. She invited me some place
but I had prior engagement.
I have met few people like that here too.
They may be telling the truth but I wasn't sure.
I was polite to them. One is still on friend list she may or may not really have albums that went gold or not it really doesn't matter to me.
She is nice person.
By the way I don't know of any famous models in Seattle.
Only models I heard from this area were working in these adult lingerie modeling places and the place was glorified version of peep show.

WHY WON'T YOU BELIEVE ME?? I *AM* BRITNEY SPEARS!

Oh, damn... posted this from the wrong account.

:D

Why? Because you have a IQ and Britney Spears has none.

I once had a very charming guy chatting me up on SL.

He told me he was the millionaire son of an Earl, had a helicopter and drove a very rare Buggati. He also sent me some pictures 'of him' and boy, was he drop dead gorgeous!

Of course, I didn't believe a word of it, but as he seemed nice otherwise, I just played along.

We spoke on webcam, he was just as good looking as his real life picture had implied. He also spoke with a wonderful plummy accent.

A few weeks later I saw an article mentioning him in The Times - with a picture, lol

I later went on to meet him in real life. And yes, he was telling the bloody truth all along!

I bet most the people he spoke to in SL about his rl didn't believe him either, lol

BTW - if anyone reading this knows who I am referring to and is wondering why he is no longer on SL, please contact me in-game.

The only reason I thought was unusual because the person behind the avatar is pretending to be an RL recording artist, using that artist's RL photos and website in her profile and performing as said artist in venues on SL. That's kind of bold, I think.

It's either a fan fantasy gone way too far, or one credit card number away from identity theft.

Google is not revealing the meaning of this to me. What's this about?

Long explanation to follow, but fully explains the reference:

~The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 31, Douglas Adams~

It is of course well known that careless talk costs lives, but the full scale of the problem is not always appreciated.
For instance, at the very moment that Arthur said, 'I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle,' a freak wormhole opened up in the fabric of the space-time continuum and carried his words far far back in time across almost infinite reaches of space to a distant galaxy where strange and warlike beings were poised on the brink of a frightful interstellar battle.

The two opposing leaders were meeting for the last time.

A dreadful silence fell across the conference table as the commander of the Vl'hurgs, resplendent in his black jewelled battle shorts, gazed levelly at the G'Gugvuntt leader squatting opposite him in a cloud of green sweet-smelling steam, and, with a million sleek and horribly beweaponed star cruisers poised to unleash electric death at his single word of command, challenged the vile creature to take back what it had said about his mother.

The creature stirred in his sickly broiling vapour, and at that very moment the words, 'I seem to be having tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle' drifted across the conference table.

Unfortunately, in the Vl'hurg tongue this was the most dreadful insult imaginable, and there was nothing for it but to wage terrible war for centuries.

Eventually, of course, after their galaxy had been decimated over a few thousand years, it was realised that the whole thing had been a ghastly mistake, and so the two opposing battle fleets settled their few remaining differences in order to launch a joint attack on our own galaxy---now positively identified as the source of the offending remark.

For thousands more years the mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across---which happened to be Earth---where due to a terrible miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog.

Those who study the complex interplay of cause and effect in the history of the universe say that this sort of thing is going on all the time, but that we are powerless to prevent it.

'It's just life,' they say.

Sounds like fraud to me. I'm sure the actual artist would want to know about it before some reporter from Rolling Stone magazine heard the imitator and wrote up a flaming article about who they think is the RL musician.

I was having a great time with a particularly charming young lady who professed to be of royal stock living in London, till I found out she was really an overweight Aussie Yobbo and my alt :)

Well there is this new age theory we can create our own reality.....the believe is your emotions don't distinguish between what is real or fantasy if it makes one happy...
perhaps the fantasy of being someone like singer in rl and in sl makes her happy.

I met a young woman av once who said she was a rock singer and gave me a pic of her RL on stage. I've no idea of whether she was genuine or not.

Also when I was listening on voice once there was a guy who claimed he'd been a high-ranking officer on a British nuclear submarine. He seemed to know what he was talking about and spoke with authority without blurting out any sensitive information.

I subscribe to the view that people can be whoever they like in Second Life as long as they don't try to deceive people in distasteful ways. One thing I would find a bit creepy, though, is if someone models their avatar and SL presence on another RL person, like the guy mentioned earlier who pretended to be his sister.

I am just an ordinary guy who has had one or two lucky breaks in life, which in turn enables me to indulge myself in studying virtual economics in virtual reality worlds.

But I am not a multi millionaire, neither am I fantastically good looking and that one view I have is (mostly) we tend to exaggerate our good points and play down our negatives, much as we do in real life. Except it’s easier to do on what amounts to a (mainly) anonymous world where what you see and read is what the other person creates.

There are the odd exceptions, that is you can meet folk who (in real life) punch well above their virtual weight. But I don’t bet or trade on it

Yes I met a girl last night at Bogart's and told her I was Elvis, and that I'm enrolled with Jenny Craig and got rid of my white karate suit long ago

I *almost* wish I wasn't taken :)

Generally, I try not to probe about people's RL situation, which is kind of wilfully perverse of me since my av is closely based on my RL "going out" look... but I also have the opposite problem, where I get the "no way!" reaction when I tell people what I have been doing over the weekend (or whatever). Some people have tracked my online presence and come back to me about things I've said on other forums and systems, which was a sligtly odd sensation.

In the end I surmised that actually, people just wanna deal with the av in front of them and it's best not to have "challenging" tales or information - they tend to produce train wrecks. Once a few years back I had half a dozen screen names on a certian US service which were being driven by some uber-famous people: every now and again one of them would "come out" to someone in an online chat, but pretty quickly once they compared notes on how that tends to pan out, they stopped doing it.
