I befriended another avi on my main account a few months ago. Even though we don't speak all the time she has been a very good friend. Recently I noticed she changed her SL profile to reveal she's a recording artist (not well known, but signed). I decided to check out the site listed on her profile and found inconsistencies with some of the stories she's told in the past.
Yesterday she sends me an invite to her live performance. It was my first time hearing her voice. Not only does she sound nothing like the singer she claims to be, she sounds absolutely horrible! I notice all the others in attendance didn't comment about the performance - not in open chat, anyway. I think we were all pretty shocked. I have no idea why my so-called friend is lying except for the fact she may be trying to compensate for a dull RL.
So since this is Resident Answers, I have a question for all of you: have you met any persons in SL who greatly exaggerated their RL and you have proof? What did you do about it?

These kinds of things happen in RL, too. I can only suggest that you react the same way you would in RL, what ever that may be.

Maybe the artist that she's impersonating needs to know that someone is pretending to be her..... OTOH, the difference in what you may hear on someone's immaculate studio recording is likely to be much better sound-wise that what you'd hear when they stream their live miced voice along with a backing track from the bedroom studio.....

I was involved for some time with someone who told me he was his RL sister. First name, pictures, changed RL story and everything.
When I found out, I gave him a chance, and we still tried to make it work, but he started acting like himself and I realized he had a thing for his own Avatar (or rather his female avatar.)
So that went pretty bad.

I used to know 2 different people who claim to be models from Seattle who play on the computer 16 hours a day cause they are also gamer geeks. I don't "KNOW" they are lying, just seems weird that all the Seattle fashion models I know spend so much time gaming.

I have considered that, but when I say she sounded terrible she sounds like someone with absolutely no vocal skills whatsoever. I can't carry a tune to save my life and she sounds worse than me! On top of that, I read the blog written by the artist on her MySpace page. She loves to quote a particular author and claims to be a fan. I happen to be a fan too and brought this up to my friend. She asked me "Who is that?" I'm calling BS on this one . . . .

Yes I met a girl last night at Bogart's and told her I was Elvis, and that I'm enrolled with Jenny Craig and got rid of my white karate suit long ago

I'd definitely let the *real* artist know about this - these "concerts" that are being done in her name can be potentially damaging to RL career......

Evil plan time:
Contact the recording artist through her website/fansite/myspace/facebook or what-have-you.
Comment on the low quality of sound transmission in Second Life, and mention perhaps she should upgrade her rig before her next live show in SL. Make sure to mention that you know she has a lovely voice, but the stream must have grbled it a bit.
oh, and drop her avatar name in there somewhere.

Someone exaggerated and outright lied about their RL in SL? What are the internets coming to?

From: Teeny Leviathan Someone exaggerated and outright lied about their RL in SL? What are the internets coming to? I know it's pretty common for people to exaggerate in SL and on the internet in general. Nothing new there. The only reason I thought was unusual because the person behind the avatar is pretending to be an RL recording artist, using that artist's RL photos and website in her profile and performing as said artist in venues on SL. That's kind of bold, I think.

Exactly what I was thinking Annabelle!!
I have met folks whom I suspect are embellishing their real lives....and I pretty much do as I do IRL....I nod and smile and don't get too heavily involved with them. (I don't do SL romance so that does save a lot of grief probably) But, I also have met people who have been very straight forward and consistant whom have become great friends.
Then there's the third type.....the type that do embellish and maybe even pretend to be something completely different....but they tell ya that's what they're doing......and ya just kind of shrug it off and say, ok, whatever. LOL
I have one good friend who did initially lie to me about a certain detail of her life......but that was because she was protecting someone close to her......and when she finally did tell me the truth it was no big deal....she thought I'd be mad, I wasn't...I understood her reasoning....and we remian great friends. But sometimes I think, just as in RL, we hold back a bit until we are absolutely sure we can trust another person. That's very normal....and probaby a little bit harder to guage in SL...cause anyone could potentially be fabricating their RL.

And also considering the fact that Seattle is known worldwide as a fashion Mecca, anyway. Are you sure they are 2 different people? No offense to any Seattle fashionistas outh there, but the only fashion I associate with Seattle is plaid flannel shirts and fleece vests. Sometimes people tell me some things I find to be unbelievable, I try to look past it unless it becomes a problem. I won't stay friends with someone who seems to be a chronic deceiver/manipulator, but if someone wants to harbor delusions that they are the Don Juan of Dubuque, I'm cool with that as long as they are willing to accept the idea that I am the Cindy Crawford of Seattle, or however I consciously or unconsciously portray myself.

Definitely 2 separate people. Completely different ages. One was 20ish, one must been at least a decade older than that Or else she was a Model, Hardcore gamer AND decade old pop-culture expert.

I once had a very charming guy chatting me up on SL.
He told me he was the millionaire son of an Earl, had a helicopter and drove a very rare Buggati. He also sent me some pictures 'of him' and boy, was he drop dead gorgeous!
Of course, I didn't believe a word of it, but as he seemed nice otherwise, I just played along.
We spoke on webcam, he was just as good looking as his real life picture had implied. He also spoke with a wonderful plummy accent.
A few weeks later I saw an article mentioning him in The Times - with a picture, lol
I later went on to meet him in real life. And yes, he was telling the bloody truth all along!
I bet most the people he spoke to in SL about his rl didn't believe him either, lol
BTW - if anyone reading this knows who I am referring to and is wondering why he is no longer on SL, please contact me in-game.

Oh yes, I met someone like that many months ago. Eventually I found out that she lied about almost everything. But she was pretty good at lying. Only after I broke off the relationship I found out that they were all lies. Really everything. Only then I understood why she was always so suspicious about where I was and what I did lol. Oh, and later she sent me a notecard that I had knocked her up with twins lol. Well, that could have been the truth
