From: Jesseaitui Petion Right, but "virtual sex" is also not a *bad* thing. They have just been portraying SL as an evil and corrupt place where people go to do their sins in secret. heh in Secret ?!?! so I'm not supposed to WAIT till the neighbors drop by to jump on the coffee table and [beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.... this message has been interrupted to preserve the (hah) good name of the poster, your sensitive ears and hopefullly the posters account status.... we now return you to your regularly scheduled post] but then they took their lifelike replica of a platypus back so that was the end of that ... serious, L&O always goes for the worst possible angle on everything... whether it 's protraying all furries as plushies, Dommes as sociopaths, cellphones as the gateway to hell, or vide games as virtual crack dens.... and don't get me started on SVU... no thanks rather watch CSI (Grissoms the man) or NCIS (swoons for Abbey)... even Crossing Jordan (although the whole mother death sub plot takes more away from the show than it helps, but I like ALL the characters)

I used to watch a show PORTAL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_(TV_series) on G4 Tv a few years back, it used various virtual worlds, SL being one of them. I guess it was more Machinima, but was a blast to watch, and is what brought me here.

From: Colette Meiji Yes its the same show - SVU
Its gonna do for second life what that lame furry convention CSI did for furries. As distinct from the non-lame RL furry conventions? SVU loves to get heavily bizarre; it turns them on a lot, even more so than CSI. There was a CSI New York with a BDSM slant, heavily based on The House of Gord (a story so richly hilarious it should be made into a proper hollywood movie, all on its own - it even includes a pivotal incident with a VAT inspector!); it too was overwrought with the downsides of every possible activity, from forniphilia to uncomfortably tight clothing.

From: Novis Dyrssen Funny thing is, a similar thing was what brought me here. I read a clever thriller "Cast of Shadows", originally published in 2005, in which the main character clones the killer of his daughter to find out who he is. Half of the later story is set in an environment called "Shadow World" and is so very much a slightly changed version of SL that it made me go "Huh?" when suddenly all salesmen offered me SL books because it was the new hype. (I work in a bookstore, fyi.) I got here because of a Torchwood novel called "Another Life" (by Peter Anghelidis), which is partially set in an interctive computer simulation called "Second Reality". The similarities are also quite close.

Is that last weeks episode? I have it DVR'd, haven't watched it yet. SVU, and CSI (The Vegas One) are two of my favorites.

Hasn't the same sensationalism genure been played out over and over, all focused around the internet. Chatrooms, Microsoft (netmeeting too went a little further with webcams and mics) Yahho followed, etc etc.. now its SL's turn in the barrel. No doubt a version of Lawnmower Man in the not to distant future will come under the cosh and so it goes on and on.
What many do not perhaps see, like RL there are many layers, whether it's 'Played' in RL, or ported into a VR platform, crime wasn't invented with the internet, it's older than the wheel. The oldest known 'business' in the history of 'man' is prostitution, 2nd is building/construction. If crime is 20% of RL, then it's fair to say that the same percentage is relevant in any form of 'platform', including RL, the biggest platform of all. The main difference is the microscope that the internet gives, we are all fish in a barrel.
Perhaps the main missing element in a platform like SL is local enforcement officers.. 'who ya gonna call?'. If the crime is severe enough it maybe extracted into RL and dealt with. Given the relative aspect of 'I'ts adults just playing', probably creates a layer whereby crime can go unchallenged?
Your World, Your Imagination, Your Problem, You Deal With It.

One thing that struck me is how Blatant the comparison is to Second Life in the trailer.
Brenda- its supposed to be the next show coming up. Not sure which day SVU is on.
Towards the end of the trailer it definitely seems to be playing up the Ageplayers are really kids IRL angle, and the weirdos (Locke's dad from Lost) that are into them. He tells a woman less than half his age that she "got too old".

As much as these type of shows annoy me. I have to say that they do have a point.
Two of my friends have had scary online -> real life stalker episodes. One involving a friend's 12-year old daughter, who snuck out of a movie to meet the 40-year old married man (her guild leader in EQ, flew 1200 miles to meet her).....Very scary.
My other friend. The guy tracked her down, and started calling...saying things that made it seem like he was spying on her RL.
Sure the tv is sensationalized. But there are some scary people out there. So if the show convinces some girls to be more careful with their RL information, I can't complain too loudly.

I doubt many teenage girls are watching SVU. Though it might get some parents to take more interest in what their kids are doing online. The Everquest Guild leader thing sounds very creepy.

From: Gummi Richthofen SVU loves to get heavily bizarre; it turns them on a lot, even more so than CSI. . So right! If you're not familiar with the show, be aware that all of it's regular viewers know it's the most lurid of the L&O franchise, dealing almost exclusively with sex crimes -- in some ways more like a soap opera than a crime show. So don't be upset when the episode paints SL horribly - it also paints corner groceries badly! If anything the show will probably drive a lot of people to try SL. More probable lines from the show: "The victim's avatar has been mutilated. She has been scalped and her hair has been sewn onto her anal region" Inspector: Have you seen this suspect? (shows picture to Oryx, atm a Raven) Oryx: oooo shiny! (grabs picture and flies away) "11:25 PM. Spotted suspect's avatar. Suspect attempted to escape, but appeared only to be running very slowly in place. We went to cage the suspect, but crashed when we deployed weapon."

The Everquest Guild leader thing sounds very creepy. It was very creepy. My friend's daughter was luck...very lucky. She basically threatened him with telling his wife, and he slithered back off under his rock. But I can't help thinking if he tried it again with someone else. They didn't involve the police, so I worry about it. It wasn't really the kids I was thinking about though. I know many 18-22 year olds that give out far too much information about themselves online. Like I said, my other friend (24 at the time) was a stalking victim from an online 'friend'.

From: Isablan Neva I was figuring CSI would get to it first; they've already done hookers, strippers, furries, S & M parlors, gender bending, peeping toms, foam parties, killer robots, vampires, aliens and role players. SL should be next up on the list any time now.... /me blinks. Foam parties?

I really hate that there is any publicity about SL at all... RL husband calls me from the road the other day..he had been listening to Dr. Laura - not a favorable view of SL. No- I would rather they would all just forget about us and let us go about our virtual lives in peace...

Whether WWWII is SL or something merely mildly related to it, we have a lot of peoples attention. Whether LL survives or not is a complicated issue I'm certainly not qualified on commenting on but I don't think we shall be left alone unless SL gains strength and approval .. or crawls into a corner somewhere and dies, adding to a heap of bodies like Pacman and Betamax.

From: Colette Meiji I saw this while watching Heroes (sorry about the commercial) Its a trailer for the Law and Order SVU season opener "Avatar" Where people are involved in a Online game called AY (another you) with 5 million players. From looking at the Trailer it includes Escorting, Virtual Sex, cybering , adicted and even deranged players, Age-Play (including real life) and "5 million users" Obviously the writers got the idea from Second Life, and obviously its not a realisitc or favorable portrayal. So anyhow - there you have it. Expect more users looking for teh Sechs, and a nice rash of Local NBC news "Exposes" on the real virtual smut world, Second Life. Hopefully no one I know has any issues in real life when their husband/wife sees this and starts butting into to what "they are doing on the dam computer all night on that Second Life game" saw it as well. i and the husband will be watching as it was only a matter of time before "SL" hit the crimewave thingie. that and i really like SVU *ducks*

As for SVU, I think the show is interesting and I watch it sometimes -- but like others have said they specialize in taking seemingly innocent situations and people and twist them into a perverted monster. The writers of that show can make a parakeet look evil. Besides, there's no such thing as bad publicity.
