I saw this while watching Heroes

(sorry about the commercial)

Its a trailer for the Law and Order SVU season opener "Avatar"

Where people are involved in a Online game called AY (another you) with 5 million players.

From looking at the Trailer it includes Escorting, Virtual Sex, cybering , adicted and even deranged players, Age-Play (including real life) and "5 million users"

Obviously the writers got the idea from Second Life, and obviously its not a realisitc or favorable portrayal.

So anyhow - there you have it. Expect more users looking for teh Sechs, and a nice rash of Local NBC news "Exposes" on the real virtual smut world, Second Life.

Hopefully no one I know has any issues in real life when their husband/wife sees this and starts butting into to what "they are doing on the dam computer all night on that Second Life game"

I also saw a trailer for SVU where a "virtual reality" female user gets stalked and killed by some guy who meets her in the virtual reality. Great publicity!

Does AY lay VAT charges on their residents? How's the customer service? Is is laggy? Exhorbitant tier fees on land? I need details!

DOH sorry! I thought you meant that there was a whole new series starting called "Avatar." I didn't watch your trailer. *grins sheepishly*

You're lucky you didn't watch it. Creepy and lame. And the non-Randolf Mantooth guy from "Emergency" has gotten really old.

You know I sometimes watch Law and Order and seeing how they take ideas from current events and trends I always wondered when they'd do one on SL.

There was a Dutch soap opera that did a story arc partly set in SL a few months back.

I was figuring CSI would get to it first; they've already done hookers, strippers, furries, S & M parlors, gender bending, peeping toms, foam parties, killer robots, vampires, aliens and role players. SL should be next up on the list any time now.... ;)

CSI was trumped on SL by SVU, but I'm sure they will cover it before JAG, ER or NCIS.

I feel you.

My friend was just telling me that her mom heard about the game on the radio and it was saying some bad things, and she asked her "Don`t you and your friend play that game?" Kind of embarassing. I`m not here for the virtual "sex" nor can I say I go near it. There`s more to SL (and life lol) then sex, and it sucks that whenever the press does news on SL they seem to just focus on the bad, or rather..out of hand, aspects of it.

Yes some people are here to age play and do weird and twisted things, but not everyone is here for that. There`s a huge world of creativity and socialization I think the press just is not picking up on for whatever reason.

I think it's because the phrase is not "socialization sells".

"Were any items missing from the victim's inventory?"

"The suspect couldn't have gotten far, it's been really laggy today."

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, please examine Exhibit A...as soon as it rezzes."

Right, but "virtual sex" is also not a *bad* thing. They have just been portraying SL as an evil and corrupt place where people go to do their sins in secret. heh

So when can we expect a Chris Hanson "To Catch A Predator" episode in Second Life?? :D

CH: (typing sounds) "You came to this skybox expecting to find a 12 yr old Child Avatar named Charley95. You TP'd in wearing an Excite Penis and playing 'lets get it on' sound clips. What were you expecting?"

LOL! Just the idea of how silly that would be makes me wanna do a Machinima about it! :D

To be honest, any dramatisation is just that, a drama, no more than some of the posts we see here. Some people will take it at face value and think 'Oh god! my little girl plays on SL!' but there will be a lot more people thinking 'hmmm, an online world huh?' I'm sure.

Funny thing is, a similar thing was what brought me here. I read a clever thriller "Cast of Shadows", originally published in 2005, in which the main character clones the killer of his daughter to find out who he is. Half of the later story is set in an environment called "Shadow World" and is so very much a slightly changed version of SL that it made me go "Huh?" when suddenly all salesmen offered me SL books because it was the new hype. (I work in a bookstore, fyi.)
