Briana darling.
Those weren't merely flip remarks. I believe Rush that is the biggest dolt to walk the planet, taking advantage of the gullible and easily-persuaded. Fox knows that sensationalism sells, too, and takes full advantage of it. Neither is taken terribly seriously by my fellow Canucks, either, btw. I'm entitled to my opinion. My reply fit perfectly well with your rant about the demise of journalism so I don't know why you're so hysterical about that.
I don't really care what you think I need to post. No one challenged my "anti crisis" rant in any way worth responding to. In fact, I would ask YOU to point out where I said that there was no crisis. I objected to how it was sensationalized. Kinda like Fox does it.
Frankly, I think you're a bit of a lunatic. At least Pep is just mean. His head works just fine otherwise.

Damn...........freaking work!!! I missed all this. NEXT TIME lets do this on a weekend. And for the record since a few quoted me a few times. I said it makes me WONDER why I'm not at the gun/ammo store myself. I DID NOT say I was on my way there. I also said that it's a little scarey that people (and there is a growing number of them) are seriously comtemplating the NEED for such actions. Any weapon I would buy would be for protection........and, if it became necessary, a revolution. Some of you seemingly intelligent folks need to understand what you read......obviously, at least a couple of you, aren't that level of intelligence. And for the record, again............I VOTE. I always vote. I always have voted. And I will continue to always vote. However, I do tend to try to educate myself on the politics of who I am voting for......that means I watch FOX News, I occassionally listen to Rush Limbaugh, I even watch CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and MSNBC.........I even listen to NPR. I'd say I do much better than most voters about learning which candidate is more (or less) in line with my personal beliefs. If you only listen to Bill Mahar and refuse to listen to Rush Limbaugh, are you really trying to find facts? Brenda and Briana.........I take back every "pfft" I've ever thought about both of you.

Likewise....I guess. Were here that many? You are right about getting multiple sources of information, although i do draw the line at MessNBC......... I watch Bill Maher, and Jon Stewart, and CNN, FOX, BBC. I don't watch the broadcast networks news shows, although sometimes I listen 60 Minutes in the car if I am traveling at that time. I listen to Rush, and Hannity, and Laura Ingram, Curtis Sliwa, and Imus occasionally. Even O'Reilly gets a looksee sometimes. If you limit your sources to only what you want to hear or agree with, you do yourself a disservice

Haha, thanks Peggy! Now maybe i can start bugging you about Ubuntu because at the speed you compute you are probably writing your own Linux applications by now. The only time in my life i have not voted was in this past presidential election. I was obviously upset that Obama was there, but I was really really let down by McCain and did not feel right voting for someone I thought made a lame horse attempt to get the job. The fact that i live in Illinois also helped make that decision - knowing that no matter how i voted it was a democratic sweep in my state really added to the demoralization. I wish it were so easy that Fox/Rush could be the only news/information outlet we needed to stay abreast of the political scene but sadly that is not the case. It is just funny how once you say you watch Fox or listen to Rush certain folk want to completely discredit and discount any opinion you may have as if what you think no longer matters because they do not approve of the source. Every media outlet is owned by someone with an agenda, so i always find it funny when people claim their source is the one for the real unbiased information.

From: Brenda Connolly Actually, I thought Ben Franklin said that, but I may be incorrect. Hello Brenda, It was Churchill who said "Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried. " It's really interesting how this thread has turned out. I started out asking a simple question about how the recession might affect SL, and it evolved through 1. "Is there really a recession or just some people talking?" 2. "The Sh*t is hitting the fan and who do we blame?" 3. "So much Sh*t is going to hit the fan I'm going to take survival lessons from Lewis in the film Deliverance". I know this is going to upset a LOT of people but where this conversation hasn't gone is the acceptance of some blame. Yes those naughty bankers were greedy, but that's not news.. it's so not news that it's a cliche, an old joke that doesn't even get a laugh anymore. They sold too much credit, too cheaply with no regard to the risks. It has to be said that for people who apparently pride themselves on self reliance (to the point of taking up arms) you seem oblivious to the fact that there are two sides to every deal. To carry the Deliverance analogy even further (sorry if you're too young to remember the film), it's unfortunate that most people on this thread will resemble Bobby more than Lewis. You were told to squeal like a piggy, bend over and put your head in the trough.. and guess what.. you did. To quote Lewis from the same film.. WE f*cked up.. not THEY.. but WE.

Churchill, yes! Thanks. I should be embarrassed not have emembered that one.
Yes the bankers are at fault, but they were enabled in large part by the the Government. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac became disasters, bakning deregulation to the point of ridiculousness, and even going back as far as the Community Reinvestment Act in the 70's, banks were encouraged and rewarded for lending money to people who had absolutely no business getting it, with little or no hope of paying it back, in the name of a laudable but misguided idea that EVERY American should own a home. Home ownership became almost an entitlement.
Add NAFTA, the allowing of our manufacturing base to go overseas, and other schemes in the name of "Free trade" as well as oppressive tax policies that hurt small businesses and the Politicos have to bear a good part of the burden for this mess. And now they say "Let us fix it". I say "Up yours, you had your chance".

And now they say "Let us fix it". I say "Up yours, you had your chance". I agree that from a , well almost visceral point of view, we should let the whole thing go to hell in a hand cart. The trouble is that if we do, it'd be almost like what my granny called "cutting of my nose to spite my face". I know that there are people on this thread who think they are completely insulated from what's going on. The trouble is that only the independently financially secure are.. and even then only people who hold their assets in cash and have enough to support themselves for the rest of their lives (I'll hold back from suggesting it best be under the mattress!). If you depend on a job, a business, a share portfolio, a pension, home equity.. etc etc, then you're vulnerable. Basically (in my view) if we don't communally support this infrastructure we've built then the sight of cardboard towns in Central Park (and Clapham Common for that matter) stops being a nightmare from history and turns into a possible future. It doesn't seem right, it seems very unfair in fact, but we were happy to live with the "system" when times were good and now we have to work within it now it's gone bad. There's been a lot of talk about democracy on this thread. Well in my view with the good side comes the bad.. you pick up one end of a stick and you also pick up the other, even if sometimes its covered in faeces. We were happy with an interconnected world, where your savings financed my mortgage, where the taxes of the wealthy (and yes disproportionately) financed the welfare of the not so wealthy. The problem is now it turns out that every man is in fact our brother.

a unity government? ask hamas. From: Avion Raymaker I can't imagine anything more un-American, though, than an armed rebellion against a democratically elected government. What would you replace it with? A down-home moral conservative dictatorship?

Okay, my husband lost his job. If my SL hobby was not self-supporting, I'd have to consider closing down for a bit. Yeah... it's affecting me. But it's still a cheap shopping therapy.
As for Bush? Umm... my comments would not be forum friendly.

*chortles* Though, my reasons for disliking Bush are more based on his policies than that he's "teh ebils11!!" Again, not forum friendly. I'll borrow this image for those that do think he was pretty much the evils, however. It's fun!

You bet

Yes, I have put a moratorium on "all" my spending in SL, but I will try to support the good vendors and creators when times become better. I have much of what I need now, so I am pretty choosy as to who I buy from and am certainly ignoring the few bad ones who keep sending me SPAM for just visiting their store and the one builder who charged me for a L$12,000 house that was useless to me
For me it is not so much of a "credit crunch" but it sure is a bad recession, something I seem to have known for much longer than our out-of-touch politicians. We have been giving away our industrial base (the USA) for years now and our intellectual property is a shambles. I remember a time when US Steel was the best in the world, where we ruled the seas with the strength of our ship builders. You were not allowed to sell a computer to China or even software. Now, China just about owns us. Not that I think we should be isolationists, I feel the interdependence and exchange between all of us in this world is essential to freedom and understanding.
About two years ago, I noticed the rise in food prices, which hit a peak for me last year in that they had doubled in price. Now it isn't that bad because the recession seems to have reduced the prices as well as kept my rent rates down. A small consolation to those of you who are struggling worse than me, so I can only wish you well and pray things get better for all.

I worked out that I spend, on average, about £3 a week on SL, the majority of that being the rent on my land. Thats not much more than the price of a pint of beer, so it's still pretty cheap entertainment for me. If I get to the point that I can't afford even that, then I need to be turning off my broadband altogether, not just quitting SL.

Hmmh, maybe we need a separate RA Forum for the "Rest of the World"!! All i can say, is that i'm thankful that i live in one of the oldest democratic countries which does not allow you to possess "firearms" and makes it a criminal offence to even walk on the street armed with a knife. Of course its not totally effective.....but our society (in UK) would be far worst off if they didn't have such tough laws in place! This recession was foreseeable...it was a culmination of several decades fuelled by greed, until finally the bubble had to burst. I see this "world recession" as a large correction to economies whose companies were reporting massive "paperless profits" year on year. It really doesn't matter which democratically elected party is in power, the economic recession is far more complex and bigger than can be imagined with no obvious quick fit solutions. It needs the collarboation of the world's strongest economies to work with one another to get out of this mess. Isolationism is not the answer and won't protect you from this fall out.

Well if this thread must revolve around America (The centre of the Universe!).........i found an interesting commentary from one of your folk on another forum, which i will paste right here. From: someone Alexander Tyler once noted that the average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been about two hundred years. He also said, "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, followed by a dictatorship". Tyler was right on track. Virtually all of the world's greatest democracies have collapsed once they've suffered from fiscal and moral bankruptcies. America is now on year 232, and is teetering near the edge of complete collapse thanks to its incompetent, lazy, arrogant, greedy, crooked politicians and its incompetent, lazy, arrogant, greedy, crooked citizenry. Augusta Pinochet once said: "Sometimes democracy must be bathed in blood". And george Bernard shaw once noted that, "Democracy is a form of government that substitutes election by the incompetent many for the appointment by the corrupt few". There is probably noteworthy argument as to which is the world's oldest democracy (let's face it: there's argument over whether the United States is really a democracy. It's not; it's a republic). But the fact remains that even the good ol' U.S.A. has become bloated, corrupted, overwhelmed and desecrated. We are a nation that has allowed our avarice, egoism, arrogance, ignorance, selfishness, immorality and hubris to overtake our patriotism, humility, passion, selflessness, compassion, duty, worthiness and spiritualism. Without significant changes in our national culture, we are doomed to repeat the failures and shortcomings of all other democracies that have ever been founded on this Earth. It is a human flaw, and may very well be one that cannot be corrected by mere mortals

good point! I was actually interested in people's replies, before it derailed into meaningless tripe! As a content creator as well as Estate realtor, i was curious how people felt and how it effected their SL budgets. Oh well ......another time maybe!
