Also,
I think, well I am pretty sure that you will need to be able to run the Second Life normal Client on that PC, just once to set up SLim and Sync/Configure it with your Friends List etc.

Which would bugger me as I can't run SL on my PC which is why id use SLim lol

If I could runt he normal Viewer... id just use that :P

@Day Oh: GREAT! (rly!!!). Would it be compilable in Linux? *ponders*

@Megs: Yes, synching will be needed. Massivley wrote a review about the first SLim alpha/beta(?) http://www.massively.com/2008/09/03/hands-on-the-second-life-slim-client-is-here/

@Sylvester: LL took the alpha/beta(?) offline for now. See http://www.massively.com/2008/09/04/second-life-removes-voip-client/

Anyway, I'm now working on the low-bandwidth client from scratch. The Mannequin design didn't have anything like a friends list, and what I'm working on now will revolve around the friends list.

nice one. Can it be used from mobile phone? I need something like that especially you need to host an event and you might not be able to be online really quick. Something like that will be nice to let someone in SL knows about it. so far if i can't online to SL..i just reply my offline IM from my email. So far...that will be the best think to do but the link change everytime the other person in SL, IMed you first.

AjaxLife works great and just so happens to have been made by a rather brilliant female scripter; Katherine Berry when she was only 15 years old. Nothing to install, just go to address and log into SL.

You can see it and log in at:

http://67.202.48.59/

In case anyone is worried about logging in. People have been using it for over a year and no complaints about stolen passwords etc.
I use this a lot and can vouch for it being brilliant - only thing that I have found that gets past my company firewall :)

I'd be quite content to be either sleek or slim, but both would be even better.

Slinky too.

As I posted to SLU there is nothing compelling in SLim to make me use it over Ajaxlife - never use voice, everything else is a duplication of what I can do already without needing a new download. In a web browser means pretty much can use it everywhere - even in the places you are not allowed install new software.

Well no, she isn't going to stop it. As far as looking idiotic and acting like a 12 year old, you might want to do some soul searching. Imnotgoing is a frequent contributor and helps people here in the forums. Her input, including quirks are welcomed, as opposed to people that start calling others moronic.

I don't think you want to do a show of hands and put it to a vote as to who should stop what. Contribute meaningfully or chill.

Tip for anyone interested. If there is someone who just bugs the crap out of you when you see one of thier posts. You can use the mute function and never see thier posts again.

EDIT: see not wee, well maybe wee :D

/me facepalms. (=_=)

Okies.... Back to teh subjectz. =^-^=

It looks like SLim is losing this battle. SLeek too... Wah! What a bandwith hog! What the heck is it doing that still requires all that data?!?! (>_<;)

I'm totally holding my breath to see what Day's efforts turn out to be. Just the bandwidth chart alone has my attention. If it can handle IMs and possibly (just possibly... you know, a preference, not a requirement) the ability to sit on a specifically named prim. I'm gonna be one super happy nekololi! (^_^)y

I'll curb my curiosity as to where you'd like to be sitting while using such a chat client, Immy. *grins*

I guess what we want is a bare-bones IM capable client that is not a bandwidth hog. That'll be wonderful and will leaves a kludge like SLim in the dust.

You obviously have not met Immy. She's a hyper, spastic 12 year old avi most of the time.

She is also one of the brightest and most helpful people in SL.

Sleek eats almost as much bandwidth as a normal SL client (i know i ws amazed too but it does). I am in Australia where our downloads for the internet are capped. If i run Sleek I use the almost as much as using SL. If you use Sleek at work watch out for the IT guys who will likely start asking questions

Yes you can sit on your pillow. Click the objects button... however it will bring up a list over like all the prim in a 128 m radius so you need to know the EXACT name of whatyou want to sit on. Then click sit on (however this doesnt always work, I have tried to have my Sleek avie sit on somethign next to my normal avie and he just didnt sit)

eclectic, check out big pond, no download limit while your in SL (it apparently is only ment to be while on there islands. but i havn't been there in at least 10 months and still get free bandwidth while on SL and so do my friends who are with them)

Trim

Okay, one low bandwidth IM client :) You can add and remove friends, and you can send and receive IM's. No bells and whistles.

Full source and binaries on Google Code http://code.google.com/p/trim/

Feel free to do whatever you want with it 'cause I'm going with BSD license... but remember, I'm broke and I love you :>

Maybe I'll add a feedback and donation thing in the future but for now I have that feeling I should go try to concentrate on something that will make me less broke :)

For those who are interested but puzzled by the source, the key to the bandwidth trick is simply to never send AgentUpdate messages, not even one. You stay in this state where you're not physical, you can't move or see objects or anything at all, and you save boatloads of bandwidth because the sim doesn't subscribe you to the usual stream of object updates, sound/animation triggers, terrain/wind data, etc etc etc.

Hope you find it useful :}

It looks very good. UI could be tweaked, obviously - tabs would be nice.

Add in your Voicebox code as an option (i.e. can be switched off for low bandwidth or switched on for those who *do* want to voice), and you have what SLim should have been!

I'm not conversing with you; so try to not stick you face in the conversation if you can at all help it. You can stand up for your friend if you want - but; I'm still not conversing with you am I?...

As to your opinions about whether this person is relevant or helpful? Well - your opinion is not much use here.

I'm telling the idiot to stop the idiocy. Pretty simple really.

Show of hands? Not a democracy bitch.

Oooh... Thankies for the bump! =^-^=

I totally tried out the software.. GOOD JOB DAY! XD

Now... Bug report... (=_=)

Group and object IMs still come in.... But come up as standard IM windows... And get top priority. (>_<;)

I'm using it right now and I have about 12 new IM windows from what I believe to be two major help groups. One for each person responding to group chat. (T_T)

Still, this is great and I'm already putting it to use. \(^_^)/

Gotta love creative people... They ruin everything. (^_^)y

Actually, you are. You responded, which opens the channel of conversation. Perhaps a link to a dictionary would help? ^_^

Great, I can't wait to try. Right now neither this nor sleek is logging in which I don't understand but clearly that's another issue.

I'll be interested to see how this works over a moving GSM connection, Sleek isn't so good, as soon as the connection switches between data rates, Sleek logs out in a heap. If there's a client that can be a bit more resilient and retry a bit more i'm on the lookout for that one.

Immy: Thanks for starting the thread!

Day: I can't wait to try this out; I've used both SLeek and Ajax occasionally from work during breaks, but sounds like yours will be lots better.

Pink: Every single one of your flaming-is-the-sole-purpose-of-my-posts-in-this-thread have been reported. And I encourage others to do so as well.

You guys, I'm really thankful for the responses about Trim, and I also received a donation, I didn't expect this at all!

I started working on fixing group IM, but something about the protocol and the lib didn't seem to match up... No worries, I'll figure it out soon even if it means switching to a custom packet handler.

Also I had one person email me about the friends list having "waiting" in place of the names. I made sure that the list is updated when names are received, so this person must have some insane packet loss. I think I'll try to remedy that by having it re-request names on a timer if there are still entries that say "waiting."
