Okies, we're starting to get more options to contact people inworld. SLim looks totally cool... But, it's some sort of 'middleman' login with a whole different password and stuff. That buggzers me a bit. (>_< I wanna know... Considering I'll never use voice chat. Which would be better for sneaking on once in a while? (^_^) I only have a few friends with off-world contacts, mostly Google Chat, and I'd like to get on a bit more often, but not eat up a buncha bandwidth at work and stuff. (^_^) If that's all I'm after... Ain't SLeek convenient enough? Or does it still try to download a buncha graphics while it's running? (o.o) And.... When I'm in SLeek, I log in at my home... Is there a way I can sit on my pillow there so that I'm sure I don't move around? (^_^)

Haven't figured out how to get SLIm yet.
SLEEK constantly crashes on me.
But Metabolt worked ok.

look at your "objects" list and find the pillow and click sit and presto you will sit.

Sleek eats almost as much bandwidth as a normal SL client (i know i ws amazed too but it does). I am in Australia where our downloads for the internet are capped. If i run Sleek I use the almost as much as using SL. If you use Sleek at work watch out for the IT guys who will likely start asking questions Yes you can sit on your pillow. Click the objects button... however it will bring up a list over like all the prim in a 128 m radius so you need to know the EXACT name of whatyou want to sit on. Then click sit on (however this doesnt always work, I have tried to have my Sleek avie sit on somethign next to my normal avie and he just didnt sit)

Imnotgoin' - I used Sleek about 18 months ago, briefly. It's totally text based, no graphics. I doubt that you can sit as you can't "see" anything to click on. You can however, TP, and get a list of friends online, and a list of who's nearby. It worked well on my broadband connection, but, not at all well on dialup (which was the reason I was interested in it's use)

Imnotgoing, seems Metabolt is the way to go for you, you can get a list of objects around you and even sit on them. May want to check it out.

there's also the web-browser based "AjazLife" and "Movable Life"... still, just as text based, without all the bandwidth.

AjaxLife works great and just so happens to have been made by a rather brilliant female scripter; Katherine Berry when she was only 15 years old. Nothing to install, just go to address and log into SL. You can see it and log in at: http://67.202.48.59/In case anyone is worried about logging in. People have been using it for over a year and no complaints about stolen passwords etc.

I've been tempted to try AjaxLife, being that it's some other machine somewhere actually making the inworld connection. But, so far everyone's talking stuff that behaves like SLeek... How about the SLim thing? Has anyone tried it yet to make the comparison? There's gotta be a guinea pig out here somewhere. (o.o)

I made a client that uses a little-known feature of the simulator to avoid subscribing to the deluge of object updates and all that, and I made this network utilization graph for SL Exchange... Now, I have been super-conservative with its feature set, but you can chat and *receive* IM's... Do you think if I added the ability to converse with others in IM's it'd attract significant interest?

Sending and receiving IMs w/o the need to log on with the full client is the one "killer app" everybody is waiting for, as opposed to voice, which seems to be as popular as a prim carbuncle.

I like many others would love a way to stay in touch with friends in SL via IM's while at work.. But the bandwidth issues prevent that even with SLeek. But a low bandwidth text based client with IM and friend's list capability would be wonderful, and yes would draw a lot of interest. (edit) ps. if you could make it run under windows moble, so it would run on a pocket pc, you could make a fortune too. *laughs*

Many expecting SLim to work similarly to Sleek (and the various others). One of the problems is that your avatar appear inworld (statuesque) whilst using such clients, and people hoped that LL would modularise the API so that you could connect to the messaging system in SL without having to deal with the 3D systems (in effect work like the SL client after a failed teleport and you get the message "You have been logged out of SL but can continue to send and receive IMs" . However, from first impressions it doesn't look like SLim is a client to the SL messaging system at all. Rather it is a client to a third party messaging system run by Vivox. The firstlook SL client needed to run it bascially syncs your friends list to this additional messaging system, and pipes messages received from it into the same UI as SL messages. This seems clunky to me - unless this uses an open API which could also be used to interface in a similar way with other messaging servers (such as Skype, MSN etc.)? Matthew

Okay, I'll do it! That client (Mannequin) does require you to log in though, but the network utilization is really almost zero You can probably guess by the name the target audience I had in mind, but I think I'll take the advice of you guys. I'm a little butthurt about SLim, I guess. I released my voice client called VoiceBox about a month ago and its popularity is absolutely zero. At the time, the text chat and buddies features were disabled on Vivox's end. Today, I checked and the features are enabled, but it seems the currently available slvoice.exe doesn't have those features yet, so basically I have no idea how to use them until LL does. Also I can't tell yet, but my guess is that the person you want to text chat with will need to have Voice enabled. But I think it's cool that using Vivox means you don't have to log your avatar in.

From: Day Oh ...That client (Mannequin) does require you to log in though... Honestly... That's the least of my worries. Logging in will work as an "available" indicator for anyone who wants to chat with me. I'm seriously impressed with the bandwidth usage (or lack of) and see this as the way I surely want to go. (^_^)y (( BTW... I've been too dumb and lazy to play with your client-side AO controller... How has the popularity been on that one? (o.o) ))

From: Imnotgoing Sideways your client-side AO controller Oh I didn't make that at all! It's attributed to Gilbert Roulot from what I can see. About its popularity, well, I use it every day, but other than myself I only know of a small handful of people that use SLProxy plugins. Maybe some day someone will make a simpler plugin system and ClientAO can be integrated since its license is BSD Or it could be that LL will provide a better solution eventually From: Ricky Yates That's great news! I expect that this will be a very popular client indeed. Being depressed and poor, I was planning to sell the software for use to model clothing, etc... really, an act of desperation more than anything. Ugh, now I don't know Maybe I can forget about mannequin features until later and work out some interface for IM's. I mean at the moment it seems like people would be into a client that uses less bandwidth than SLeek. *ponders*

Not sure how others would use it, but my av would sit all alone by itself at a sky phone booth (at Z=4000 or so) to handle IMs.

From: Day Oh I mean at the moment it seems like people would be into a client that uses less bandwidth than SLeek. *ponders* Well, at the moment I'm on holiday and the only internet access is via a GPRS connection which basically means a typical speed of 2-3Kb/s - a low bandwidth SL IM client would be ideal in these circumstances.... Anyway, I'm now working on the low-bandwidth client from scratch. The Mannequin design didn't have anything like a friends list, and what I'm working on now will revolve around the friends list.

Good move! A friends list and an IM send/receive feature ... that's a good start for version 1. Further bells and whistles can wait. Keep it simple.

so is SLim ready to download? Is there a link somewhere? Looking at the press release on it it seems they are still doing some finishing touches and not released yet? Am I missing something?
I'll be the first in line when it does...
I've tried Sleek and the other one..(starts with an A?? sorry its nearing 5PM here and my brains shuts down...errr Ajax something??)
Both logs your Avy in-world and i don't like that...does SLim do the same??
Also I worry about ppl who send me notecards or attachments or objects...will it stay in my inventory or will I lose it or miss some kind of notificatiion?
ツ Sly
