A place to hang out, chat, watch tv, or listen to tunes. I also work on projects and rez/park my vehicles there. Maybe a party or a little pinch and tickle every once in a while. Pretty much the same as most people I guess lol.

I am curious, what do people do with/on their private land? How do you get enjoyment from it? I'm not talking about those who set up shop etc., I'm talking about those with no commercial use of their property.

I can ride my horse inside.

Not your crabs...? :D
Thankfully the crabs stay outside where they belong, but the hummingbird's on my deck. :)

I don't know but I'm about to find out. Just bought land and thought I would build a skybox to change clothes, work on my inventory, etc. Now that I'm working on it I think it's turning itself into an unpretentious hangout, a no frills dance floor, lots of sitting places, a garden. Not a club really, just a big meandering building with no real plan. That's kind of fun in itself.

I guess if I want something more private I'll stick a couple of rooms even higher up. It's a PG area so probably no pixel sex -- though it will be hard to turn down the many offers I have daily.

[Edit: Sorry, I meant that to read 'the many offers I have IMAGINED daily." Left a word out.]

It is a sort of addiciton.

Sometimes I worry no one but ME is ever going to see this virtual home and all the beautiful virtual furniture and all the smarmy little humorous bits I've included. Then I decide that nobody but me really IS evr going to see it.

Then I decide that I don't care and I go right back at it, being content with simply amusing myself ... which really is what I came here to do.

After more than a year in-world, I've never felt the need for a home. I have my photo studio, and that's my only building. However, I have started to consider adding a loft apartment overhead, or at least a skybox overhead.

I have a skybox now, and I really like it. I had decorated my ground land for Christmas, made a little winter wonderland. (If anyone wants to visit, it's in Trasimeno, but not sure of the coordinates offhand). I was going to set my ground house back out, but now I'm not sure, might make a forest on the land and just live in my skybox permanently. I just enjoy decorating my home. I also use it for changing clothes, trying on demos (it's much less lag than demo'ing in the stores), making clothes & boxing them, unpacking boxes, chating with my husband. It's funny, we don't actually "live" together in SL, but his land is right beside mine with his store on the ground, his skybox right across from mine. He uses his for watching videos, making furniture, taking pics for his store, boxing items, pixel sex sometimes...;). It's just nice to have your "own" place to hang out in.

I do many things. Most of those could also be done in public. All but one. Most public areas will not allow visitors to create or even rez prims. If you really like to create things, or even just rez anything that isnt attached to your avatar, then you will need to own your own plot.

no takers on the pixel sex? my neighbors used to go at it like rabbits....

LOL! In SL- they can BE Rabbits :D

My private home? Meh! I let folks hang out there, watch tv, chat with people there rather than in the center of my shop.

Build my little experiments. A few different texture changing studio things. Low prim sculptie furniture. Pose dohickies. Clothes and skins. Some scripting. Proof-of-concept builds. Artwork. I can make whatever strikes my fancy in complete privacy.

When I'm feeling really frisky, I'll put some of my stuff downstairs for wandering visitors to play with.

Mostly build and hang out with friends actually. I'm quite lucky that my business pays for a reasonable chunk of land (4096 square metres), my house occupies a nice little corner of that, and the rest is a little street and small garden space, with a big treehouse that my close SL friend lives in (I let them set up home on my land since they're awesome to have around and a good fun builder).

But yeah, the majority of my time is spent building and tinkering on my little chunk of land in the sky.

I think of my private home as my own little piece of the universe....somewhere that I can unleash whatever creativity that happens to stumble into my brain...

I do the usual things, change outfits, decorate, create..etc. I've begun a small garden with a fountain, bench etc....I like to think of it as a small 'memorial' to family I've lost over the years....a kind of way to commerate them and give them a little piece of immortality in cyberspace.... a bit silly maybe but I do find the thought comforting.

My mother will have been gone ten years this New Years Eve, and I often think that she would've gotten a huge kick out of SL.......yep...definitely would have loved it......

I don't think that's silly at all. I can appreciate the thought and what it brings to you 100%.

My place is somewhere I can make a mess in. Luckily a very kind neighbour has given me some extra space to keep all my photo studio stuff, but half of my home is still a very messy workroom. I can't move at the moment for boards with RL and SL photos I've been working on.

The other half just has some simple furniture where I can sit and chat with friends.

Mainly though, as others have said, it's my little corner where I can do and be just exactly what I want to.

I built all of my home, and I recently rebuilt it after a disastrous accidental deletion! I made all the furniture in it except for 2 scripted dining chairs. To me it was an exercise in creativity. The home has most of the things an RL home has - a bed, kitchen, bathroom, sofa etc. Up in the sky is a platform where I make stuff .
I do sell stuff from a stall next to my home but that's not the main reason for its existence.

OK, one might ask: "why do you need a bathroom or kitchen in SL?" Well, why do we need homes? Why do we need realistic avatars? Why do we need dance animations? Second Life would be very boring if we had none of these things, wouldn't it? I like the combination of realism and fantasy - like I only fly about when I'm wearing my jetpack, safety suit and crash helmet, though I could do so without. My sky platform has a levitation device holding it up, although it would stay put without the device! What are we after in SL - Virtual reality, believable virtual fantasy or unrealistic animated chatroom?

I've never had sex in my home, though I have indulged very occasionally elsewhere! At the moment there are no poseballs of any kind deployed.

That's a lovely idea! 14 years ago I lost my boyfriend, and I'm sure he would, as a sci fi fan, have also been thrilled by SL.

You could just as well ask why in RL, people like to have a place of their own, instead of staying with their parents or with friends their whole life, and socializing in malls and other public places.

My home is used in SL the same as it is in RL. I have friends over to chat and socialize. I spend quality time with my SL loved ones. I create new things, including the house itself, which is a full-scale reproduction of a Japanese castle. I swim in my pool. I ride my horse around the grounds. I sit by a campfire and watch the sunset or sunrise with friends.

I have my servers there for my store vendors, but no retail location at my home. I do have an office where I can meet with clients for my sim building work, and the entire build on my land doubles as a showpiece for my work as a terraformer, landscaper and builder.

My home in SL and my land there is a place to enjoy my social life, without being on public display like being in the middle of a shopping mall or a public park.

Oh, and on the rare occasions when I do have time for adult-oriented fun, yes, I do enjoy pixel sex with my special friends, away from the prying eyes of the general public. (My home is in an off-the-map sim.)

That's fantastic Pocket. I think my mum would have loved SL to the point she'd outrank me in addiction. She never saw SL. Dad did but I can imagine Mum, face six inches from the screen, driving a Mustang in a Wall of Death around a packed Forum clubhouse. Dad would peer over her shoulder ... smile .. and go back to his newspaper :D
