From: TundraFire Nightfire I sell a lot of arctic and Alaskan themed things at my store, so I mention that I'm from Alaska in my RL profile. I'm vague as to where I'm from in Alaska, but if I'm talking to someone on SL, I'll let them know roughly what area, without being too specific, where I live. Heh. My RL hubby and I went there on our honeymoon. We gypsied around. It was the coolest vacation ever. He finishes school in a year, adn we both want to move up that way. I'm so jealous.

My 1st Life tab has a picture of my most forever favorite Anime girl ever... Chii from chobits. =^-^=
Funny thing, even though it's a cartoon, people have still asked me if I look like that. (O.o)
Well.. Obviously not.. But.. Beyond that, it says something like "If we become friends and I see you care, you'll know about me. Probably more than you want to know." (^_^)y

I'm with those who like to keep RL details in RL under most circumstances. As for profiles, I make it a point to look at them; some folk prefer to be approached in a certain manner, and say so in their profiles. It may take a little extra time and effort, but it can save a lot of superfluous(and un-needed)drama and/or misunderstandings in your dealings with that individual. For me, it's a matter of sense and courtesy. Imagine for a moment if you could do this in RL; the time you could save...........but then, every dating service on the planet would go bust........oy.

I'm considering taking the bit about my RL down because I think it is sending off the wrong impression; conflicting RL to SL sexualities and whatnot. I'm still fairly new, but now I'm starting to see who so many people don't list anything under that part of their profile.
The Question: Do you have anything under '1st Life'? Why or why not? Was there some sort of event that changed your opinion on this matter?
I guard my real life information because I consider it stalker bait. Mostly I'm concerned with information that can be used to locate me, and information about physical details (how I look, how I dress, how I sound, what perfume I like). Other stuff isn't such a big deal (the book I read last night, the funny conversation I had with my sister, the manner in which my cat has me trained). I theorize that the more "real" you make yourself to someone online, the more emotionally attached they become to you. I have limits to the level of emotional attachment that I want in Second Life. Even if you think that listing real life information might help you (signaling that you don't want certain kinds of attention), the reverse may happen. The interest in you probably comes not so much from whatever preferences you state about yourself; the interest is increased merely by the fact that your first life information makes you seem more real. (I had once considered finding a picture of the most physically unattractive man I could find and putting it in the 1st Life tab, as a way of scaring off potential stalkers. I decided against it. There are a lot of people who aren't picky about whom they attach themselves to; the sole criterion is that "real" connection. By keeping it blank, I hope to be ignored by people wanting to make that "real" connection.) Ultimately, you don't have to justify what you want to do, or don't want to do, in Second Life. What you want is good enough. You are not obligated to offer a reason. If you don't want a particular kind of attention, just put that in your profile. Whether it's based on your real life preferences or not is immaterial. And for me personally, I actually prefer not knowing the real life details about the people I meet in Second Life. It comes back to the emotional attachment thing. The best way for me to limit my emotional attachment to anyone is to know as little about their real life details as possible. I usually avoid looking at 1st Life tabs (occasionally curiousity kills me). I hate it when people offer me pictures from their real life, because it puts me in an uncomfortable position; though I want to limit what I know about someone in real life, declining the picture may be taken as some sort of rejection, and of couse I can't just take it and not look at it because I'm going to be asked questions about the picture in a moment.

From: Bunni Menizah Let me set the scene... My cutsie little kani furry has just recently been partnered with an adorable husky. We are disgusting together, and both quite happy. The catch? My partner is my wife. No biggie, right? IRL I am a happily married woman to a sweet and wonderful guy. I even listed so on my 1st portion of my profile. So, straight in RL, gay in SL. Here is my problem; a good bit of my former non-interested male friends are now suddenly interested in me in an (unprovocted) relationship manner....to the point where I am getting love letters and stuff throughout the day. My friends list is wittling away slowly. Nope, because I choose to keep them separate, filling in RL info there would only lead to tears, as you are finding out. Nothing changed my opinion, I have always been smart

I put my RL photo in the RL tab - not that does any good. But it should tell the person all they need to know about me without them working up the trouble to actually use the keyboard.

When i used to visit clubs on a regular basis and concerts, I was hit on alll the time to the point that it was annoying. i finally put a line in my profile saying...im taken, sorry boys. that helped some...as well as a big honker ring on my left hand.
i would say it may have more to do with where you are going in SL than what you have in your profile bunni...at least that was the case for me.

My profile 1st life and 2nd life is basically me. My likes and dislikes. I edit it regualrly. I really dont liek the things I list as my dislikes. I wishI did liek marzipan. I really adore perfume. I really do like the things I do. In real life I am googled and in sl I dont mind being profiled. Some people protest being "profiled" but I dont see why. There is a certain amount of privacy in teh real world but google and gossip erode all that. I'm cool with it. Dont pay attention to what people say, blog, type, feel, snarl or opinion about you. I'm constantly reminding myself of that. I love being IMed when I am inworld. I just get a little frazzed when my IMs are capped and I miss all teh messages. Its great to speak to people - that is what sl is about. Well, that and a few other things.

From: Bunni Menizah The Question: Do you have anything under '1st Life'? Why or why not? Was there some sort of event that changed your opinion on this matter? I haven't looked in that part of my profile in a while, but I'm pretty sure it has something along these lines: "What goes in SL stays in SL; what goes in RL stays in RL." ...or something like that.

I'm always tweaking my profile... the 2nd life description, the 1st life description, and/or the Picks. I've never had much information in my 1st life section, but I often mention my general RL location and/or timezone. However, it doesn't stop people from asking me where I live or what time it is... so I know quickly whether someone is a profile reader or not. Right now I have a photo of a 75-yr old woman with a goofy grin on her face in my 1st life section. Whether that's me or not... I won't say .

I'm me in all worlds...1st, 2nd whatever. I feel no need to separate (that's a delusion anyway--folks can find you if they really want) and online friends ARE real friends to me. Maybe it's just easier for some of us to present as who we are. *shrugs* Also, I can type without having "teh" show up, EVER. Weird! Do I need to turn in my intarwbz card now?

Even a gob in the eye is better than being dismissed. It's something to scrape off and treasure later ... alone ... in the dark.

last I remember my profile has a RL pic of me in it, that was maybe a year old when inserted. light on info, because SL is not RL just a brief poetic message no one gets, my ages, status and general location. if someone cares about my RL more than that, they can just ask.... I might even answer.

I have my name, address, telephone number, work address, email address, regular hang outs, schedule and blood type in my 1st life section. I spend most nights wide awake staring out of the window with a shotgun in my hand Oh, and I've booby trapped the garden so don't try anything funny

Seriously, Pep, you really ought to get off Jig's back: I have been following this forum a little more closely than usual over these past couple of weeks and I am frankly astounded by the regularity of your niggling responses under various pseudonyms every time she posts. It is beginning to read like harassment, which isn't big and it certainly isn't clever.

Jig is not alone in receiving these attentions, but is the most obvious serial offender. Pep (I consider "teh" as harassment of the forums)
