I do not want our current attitude of laxity to be abused.. has it? I dont' think so.

Do we need to make policies to prevent some theoretical future inconvenience that hasn't even happened? I don't think so.

Actually, it has. It's started to get to where I dread the Cartel's Group Notices.

I agree Oryx - I like the notices about mostly social events - but a notice about a place where I come and the sole purpose is to buy things is not a social event. I think notices about club events are spam too as clubs should be sending them to their club groups and not taking advantage of the forum group. If forum group members want that clubs events then they will join that clubs event group.

Some things are borderline though, if it has a mainly social aspect to it then it does not bug me so much.

I think part of the problem is how big the group has got. Even if each person only sends out an occaisonal notice - in a large body of members that can be quite a few messages a day.

To me, the grand opening announcements are fine, but I do dislike the ongoing group announcements for clubs or sales. I've been guilty of sending out a couple of group IMs about something going on at my place (I think twice since the group started). I'm pretty sensitive to advertising on a group that I don't own, and only did it on a couple of occasions when I thought there was something of potential interest to the people currently logged on.

I think an ad board at the hangout is not a bad idea if it's done right. There are some that will cycle through pics and give landmarks based on whatever pic is showing. Allowing cartel members to post non-cartel events on the calendar is an interesting idea. It wouldn't take many people with weekly events to clutter it up. If people were limited to 1 a month, maybe it would work, but it's probably best to keep that for hangout events and non-commercial parties.

I really don't mind the event notices and an occassional grand opening , but "this weeks special", or "this weeks club party" is not welcome for me. Advertising on a board is fine because I can choose not to look at it or, I am there to look at it anyway. I have never pushed my RL business on the cartel group because I consider it a social group, so I will post the occassion al invite to a meditation session or live concert though.

We can probably do something on the cartel website for commercial notices.

There is a website?
Link please. :)

I asked for an example of group notices being over-used for commercial purposes, and someone here PM'd me with a valid example. Thank you, PMing person.

It brings up one comment, and one question.

Comment:
I suggest to all that if you find a problem with a member's chronic behavior in this or any other way, talk to one or more of the group owners. Mention specifically to them who seems to be upsetting the teacart and in what way they are doing so.

The owner/leader may or may not decide to take action based on one complaint, but the more complaints, the greater likelihood that something will change.

Question:
Someone here said somethign earlier to the effect that not all notices go out to every member/every time ... or somethign like that. Did I misread? How does that work? If does explain some things I have noticed - not the least of which is that the person who PM'd me above told of receiving multiple notices when I only recall ever receiving one. One time I also sent a notice which I never received although others around me received it instantly.

Someone more knowledgeable than me can probably give the particulars, but essentially, after a group reaches a certain size, it appears that group notice delivery is less reliable. The Forum Cartel group is over 300, I think, so I'm pretty sure it's past whatever that threshold is. As for *why*... I'm not sure.

We are going to continue to allow group notice for purely social gatherings - we are a social group after all - and for openings of new businesses for Cartel members, but no additional notices related to businesses. If someone feels that a member is sending inappropriate notices, they should notify one of the owners directly.

The issue is that a group notice can be sent out and for no real known reasons, not every group member will receive it - and it is totally random. There are actually a couple of Jira issues open on this. One specifically mentions large group, but the other seems to apply to groups in general. I encourage everyone to vote on these issues:

Thanks very much, LittleMe and the other group owners Chris and Garrett, for articulating a clear and fair policy on the use of group notices. :) I appreciate it.

We will get a group notice sent out - though with the current issue with group notices, half the members probably will not get it.

I rarely get Cartel group notices when offline. Keep in mind that if your IMs are capped inworld, IMs and Notices do not get forwarded to email, which is frequently the problem with me.

Not always, tho. My alt Litta recently joined the Cartel, and gets more Cartel notices than I do, even when my IMs are uncapped. I suspect that she doesn't see them all, either, though.

Oh, and thank you owners for the new policy!

I didn't know that Notices going to email were affected by the IM cap stuff - interesting.

I quite often will get group notices on one of my accounts and not on the other one. That is really the only reason that I have notices enabled on both accounts - it raises the odds of me actually seeing them.

Wow, 5 pages on a forum cartel insider issue!

You guys are really becoming the forums crowd... I remember the old days, so few of them are left... *sniffle*

Well, regardless of the fancy rules, it's cool to see a decent community in the forums.

I'd hate to see that ever die... what a cold world it would be.

Why doesn't the Cartel ask Katt to create a private group for it in this forum? I'm not in the Cartel, so it's none of my business, but it seems like a good idea.

It (GD) has already been suggested in the Town Feadback Forum -> Facelift thread. We're all still waiting for more info on the 'project'...

@Maureen
Didn't get any notices from that group this week.

i think announcing a social event is ok, if it's an actual social event. a store opening or sale or wutever is not worthy of notices.

also, i think the event should be announced once. this countdown business is really annoying, and repeating the event announcement because there is some small change is also annoying.

I agree. I would not include regular commercial club events as a social event, either. That makes it a rather fine line. I think the bottom line is if we get repeated posts from a business, it's a clue that the group is being abused.

It's also a matter of what our tolerance level is. The more we get inundated by undesirable notices, the stricter we'll want the rules to be.

When I wanted to give out gift certificates to group members, I was really in doubt, but decided to do it. Sending regular updates of my new stuff, I would not be in doubt of: I have my own group for that.

Now I do not recall wether I posted about my pick rewards in the Cartel group, but I would find that on the edge as well: Many members might like it because they can earn money, but other might dislike it because it is a way of advertising as well.

If I am going to hold a big event on my parcel, I think it would not be a problem if I put a notice out. Since I never hold events, it would be a one time thing, and a party after all ;). Would I hold regular events, I simply would not post them anyway. So I guess it is all just about using common sense.

Bottomline is though, not everyone uses either his (her) common sense, and not everyone has the same ideas. Where I think I never crossed a line, others may think different. But I think that an IM to either me (read: anyone you would think to cross the line) directly, or to one of the owners, should solve the problem quite fast. We are quite a friendly clique, so I would think this would work perfectly :-) I know I would never be offended if someone told me that one of my posts was inappropriate. Hell, I would not even be offended if someone would tell me I am inappropriate :D

That sounds very familiar. My alt Rhian gets more than I do, and I rarely get any notices from the Cartel at all....
