Of course I don't know you, but you brought up the idea of someone's negative attitiude to learning when nothing was attempted to be taught. If you think that you pointing out Cosmo's errors without explaining why they were errors, then you are not a teacher. I don't need to know you to know that.

Well, what a shame I didn't meet up with your expectations. Your problem, not mine. If you felt the need to draw diagrams and pictures, go right ahead.

A brief example was sufficient.

Phoenixa, I have been meaning to tell you how much your love of dance affected me.

Since the OP is about how SL affects our RL, I want to say that people like Phoenixa who do what they love in SL when RL has thrown them a curve ball inspires me.

Most everyone I meet is not doing something they love in RL and for those that experience SL, it is really common to go overboard at first....to get drunk on the freedom and possibilities and yes...the irresponsibility.

Instead of quitting SL at this point, I think one of the great gifts SL gives us is the chance to integrate what we have learned about ourselves in SL into a new way of being in RL. Its tough because we compartmentalize ourselves for what seem very good reasons but it is also enlightening to discover that parts of ourselves are actually really neat.

So the for OP, stick around, process what has happened to you and don't leave in a form of flight from what you have learned. Its tough but you will just have to go thru the same thing in RL anyway...its what you brought.

Better a pixal gf in bed with someone else in SL then having to go thru it again in RL.

A brief explanation would have been sufficient, but you gave neither a brief example nor a brief explanation - you just found fault and left it at that. Face it - you're not a teacher.

I believe all people are teachers (of something) and we are all students of life.

Jeez, I've even been my own best teacher, kinda like Goodwill Hunting. I taught myself to knit and crochet at 9 backwards left-handed believe it or not, so it's it's own unique one of a kind stitch, taught myself to make jewelry simply by looking at how the parts are linked together and bought a pack of jewelry tools, I taught myself to type via a book no teacher involved whatsoever, I taught myself how to make my own greeting cards, I am completely self taught in painting and I am completely self taught in alerted art, no teacher whatsoever, I taught myself how to make a quilt (didn't even need a book, just a ruler)....

 What was the topic again?

There's a big difference in someone learning from us through none of our doing or intent, and pointing out someone's error, failing to say why it's an error, and then claiming it to be education rather than just fault-finding for the sake of it.

You missed my point altogether. I think you are assuming Cosmo does not have access to a dictionary or an online dictionary. If you assume that, than you might think the average age on this board is about five or six years old. That's why I brought up the point of Goodwill Hunting. What was that line in the movie "Why pay $150,000 for a college education when one has access to a whole library for free?"

If Cosmo cared, he'd look it up in the dictionary. If he doesn't care, he doesn't care. A huge part of our learning is up to us, as I've had people try to explain to me how to do things on SL. They missed several steps on that "how to", but I was capable of figuring out those forgotten steps with a little effort, however the steps they did teach were still helpful.

I'm not assuming anything about Cosmo. I'm stating that pointing out errors, without explaining why they are errors, is not an attempt to educate someone. It's more a case of "Look at me. I know the difference between 'affect' and 'effect'. Aren't I the clever one?"

Btw, the word is "then", not "than" ;)

Did the then or than word affect my point? No. Do people have visual difficulties? Yes.

Exactly! Did the word "effect" affect anyone's understanding of Cosmo's thread title? No. So why did she point out the error without explaining/teaching the reason it was an error?

You may not be aware of it, but it's not uncommon here for a few people to jump on such errors, just for the sake of it.

And we've now come full circle. This side-topic started when Phoenixa jumped on 2 errors in Cosmo's post, Bella used the phrase "grammar nazi" about it, and Phoenixa protested, claiming that it was education.

Yep, and it's still up to Cosmo to do whatever he/she chooses to do with that info.

How about starting a thread on the appropriate ways to text message?

Oh, I think that Cosmo left the building right after writing the first post. The discussion wasn't about Cosmo - just about Phoenixa's jumping on the errors.

No Phil, I said grammar nazi's and I'm apparently a bit possessive with my apostrophes or something.

Yes my apostrophes do tend to get around a bit, oh well, nothing like a stray apostrophe to keep a thread running off topic lol

Perhaps the OP in his frustration unintentionally left so many grammatical and typo errors. As with speaking/talking, (I used both because as previously demonstrated, I'm sure there is someone just WAITING to provide correction) sometimes we have a slip of the tongue or blurted out something in haste only afterwards wish we can take it back. This could very well what happened to OP. His just happened to be in text form. He may have just said screw it I'm going to hit the submit button. I'm fed up.

We ALL have done something similar at some point in our lives and if you haven't, then keep living.

Now back to the topic. For me sl has become to a certain extent a reflection of my rl. Initially, when I came to sl I tried to be someone that I wasn't. My first year was primarily focused on building up my linden account to purchase land. Relationships, particularily romantic ones did not come into play till the very end of my first year. That is when my rl self bled into my sl persona and it was just too difficult to maintain the sl self. So, I allowed my rl self to come through and I am glad I did. I have wonderful friends that I also communicate in rl. I have a wonderful partner and we are slowly transitioning into rl.

Like in rl you go through emotional peaks and valleys and you have to find a way to balance them. When I get "tired" of sl and think about quitting, I ask myself "if this was rl would you just quit?" So, I muddle through the disappointments and rejoice in the achievements. I seek out new things and during the course develop new friendships. Someone said previously, sl is like a sublet of rl and I would tend to agree.

Everyone has their way of coping with things. Rather than "quit", just let it go for awhile as others have suggested. In rl, you wouldn't just quit. If you did the alternative would be death.

My goals for the upcoming year is to take ownership of 3 things. 1. My wellness. 2. My financial wellness and 3. Read a book at least once a month. Due to my previous employment required so much reading, (I managed disability claims which required reading volumes of medical records) it became a TEDIOUS CHORE.

In sl I am also identifying 3 things to take ownership of.

OP, if you haven't thought of this, try to take ownership of what happened to you instead of letting it have ownership of you. I, also went through a similiar experience in sl and it was very painful but I made it through pain.

I wish you luck and hope you don't quit sl altogether.

Question: why is there so much catching your partner in bed with someone else at one's residence going around. If one must cheat, don't be sloppy at it. Don't take to your home.

Also after reading this thread, one thing I won't do is come here when I am tremendously upset about something. Sometimes people just want to be heard and some of the postings were very critical of grammar, typos and what not. Yes, proper grammar usage and spelling is important. However, if OP were face to face telling you he was hurting and why, would you be correcting his use words? If your answer is no, then why does it seem it's done ALL the time.

In that situation, the last thing I and perhaps YOU would want to hear for example,

"i" before "e" except after "c" or some other grammatical rhyme.

If OP and I were face to face and he was telling me what was was hurting him, I wouldn't do him that way.

Most of us wouldn't kick a dog while they are down. But, I see it so often in these type of threads.

Kudos, to those providing advice and support. That is what he really needs now, not someone hammering him over the head with corrections.

Cosmo, the OP, deleted his post and replaced it with something else in which he was sarcastic (I believe) about his spelling being corrected.
