From: Kalderi Tomsen Yes, they SHOULD have done it from Day 1 - totally agree.
But they didn't, and they were landed with a mess.
Now they're doing what THEY think is best for whatever reasons best known to them. They obviously don't feel that the residents, their customers, deserve to be involved in that dialogue about whether it's best or not, just about how best to implement it.
Folks, the goose has been cooked, the decisions have been made and it doesn't matter how much we complain and object it ain't going to change.
So now you have a choice - make plans to live with it, or leave SL. it seems to me that anything else is just a waste of effort. It didn't even have to be Day 1. This mess was a long time coming, probably most sane people saw it, a lot complained in different ways, but LL chose to just stumble on merrily. This could have been fixed fairly easily if done properly. You are right, though. The hand wringing , rattling our cups on the bars, and flinging shit serves no purpose now beyond making us feel better. We cant change their plan, but maybe figure out ways to make it go dow a bit easier

Hence my massive nitpicking about definitions in the forums and wiki and blof.

I am one of those who wants a "more predictable experience". However, MY idea of a "more predictable experience" is being able to log in reliable, whenever I want. Being able to teleport wherever I want without failures. Being able to see avatars rez and not remain wispy clouds during the entire session. Being able to rez no-copy objects without any fear or hesitation... Technical things like that. Things that I'm pretty sure we ALL want, and what whoever LL was talking to was likely referring to as well.
Somehow, though, LL has managed to interpret our desire for a "more predictable experience" to mean we want a boring, sanitized, "safe and sane" world with absolutely no surprises; or maybe, that's just what Phillip and Michael *wanted* to hear.

One way I can think of to make this go down easier, is to turn the tables of unpredictability back on Linden Labs; specifically, if *everyone* moved to Ursula/Zindra/Pornodelphia/whatever-they-want-to-call-it! Surely, they won't see THAT coming! Except for having to move, we'll still be all together, and LL will be left holding the bag on three continents worth of empty, sterile land!

I must admit that I am hoping for something along those lines, that once the mainland is all clean and shiny, that LL chokes on it.

From: Brenda Connolly All right..it was me. I had a few too many scotches and decided to crank call LL. I didn't think they'd actually DO it! I knew it, I always suspected you were behind this somehow.

Very interesting, Craiglist are doing something similar to what I've been asking for on mature sims, they're sure as hell not doing what Linden Lab are doing.

Interesting read. From: someone [12:28] Walter McAndrews: we aren't a handful of people either [12:28] Blue Linden: LL has gotten very, very broad feedback on this Somehow I seriously doubt that LL has gotten feedback from anywhere near the 4400 people who they silenced when they shut the Jira voting down.

Everything Linden Lab hears will be interpreted as support for the plan.

This is what Qie was saying a few weeks ago, the thought being that we are ALREADY adults, having agreed to the TOS in the first place. Moving to Zindra would just reiterate that. Unfortunately for a lot of us, there's no way our land will ever qualify as Adult (to swap to Zindra) unless we start selling/buying some serious kink so we'll either pay out the nose for Zindra land or stay on the current Mainland continents.

I kinda hate to say this, but that conversation with Blue is very telling. Linden Labs has it completely in their heads that "a vast majority" of the SL population approves; though I think it's more accurate to state "a vast majority of the SL population does not disapprove", because "a vast majority" have absolutely no idea this is coming! Blue's comparison of this process to the US Presidential Elections and their typical low voter turnout is fundamentally flawed: *everyone* knows when Election Day is coming, and *everyone* knows who the candidates are. One would have to be living under a rock, never turning on the TV except to watch American Idol or Gossip Girl, to be oblivious to the facts of Election Day. Conversely, most people in SL have *NO* idea of the nature of this beast, or that it even exists, and *WON'T* know until it mauls them, BECAUSE Linden Labs has been completely silent on the issue *IN-WORLD - WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE*, and have been less than completely forthcoming in the blogs, where they've spun the story to play down its ramifications.
At any rate... LL believes its statistics are correct and that they are in the right; and nothing anyone else says to the contrary will sway them. Brenda is correct: We have exactly two choices now - We can either lie down and take it, along with measures to make the medicine go down a little easier; or we can cast our final vote on this issue in the *only* way LL will understand: With our feet. I don't see that we have any other options beyond those two.

Sounds like there's a temporary market here for a few entrepeneurs willing to mass-produce 400-meter flexi-phalluses!

The only way that LL can alert the entire population is by presenting a required "I Understand and Obey" sort of radio button after a ONE PARAGRAPH explanation upon login. An example: "As of July 1, 2009, all Adult Content will be required to be located on the new continent of Zindra, which will be accessible only by residents who verify their accounts through either: Age Verification via Aristotle, Payment Info On File via Linden Lab, or Payment Info On File via Xstreet. Adult Content is: Extreme sexual or violent depictions of sexual acts and/or simulations. For further definitions of Adult Content see [blog link here]. Please note that all definitions have been discussed and solidified. Please also note that unless you verify your account you will be denied access to all Adult Content, including that found in Search. All sellers and vendors of Adult Content will be moved to Zindra, or their content will be deleted from the Grid." Until we see something like this, 90% of Second Life residents will remain in the dark and will login one day confused and disgruntled.

As I said in another thread about alternatives to the forums if/when these are closed, there's a problem of exposure. People don't even know this is happening because they don't educate themselves. They don't bother to read the blog. They may not even know the blog exists. They don't read the forums. They only look at what's on the login screens, a place where Linden Lab has been quite obviously silent about all this. By design????? I'm starting to think that the people who don't bother, are about to get what's coming to them as a logical result of not bothering to make themselves aware of the issues.

An issue as big as this should be being presented loud and clear. Linden Lab keep finding excuse after excuse after excuse to not inform their userbase. They close forum threads, they close the Jira thread that gained a lot of attention and discussed technical issues, they won't engage in sensible debate, they won't listen. I'd hazard a guess it's by design.

I'd hazard a guess it's by design. Agreed. LL should be jumping through the hoops to get this information out, the residents should not be jumping through them to look for it. Why are they so secretive and evasive about it all?

Just one thing - If there has been positive "broad feedback" somehow tucked out of sight, why is it the broad feedback on the forum has been *against* this? After all, the forum apparently is *the* place to discuss and voice opinions on the matter...

This is why I will post chat logs and the like as LL are saying something totally different to what is being said and Blue has already sent a warning to someone accusing them of trolling when clearly this person isn't and sent them a LM to his office hours. Seems they want to silence public discussion as well I will see if I can get the logs to post minus this persons name

From: Milla Janick Under the new policy, it'll be possible for you to have a parcel in a PG region directly adjacent to a strip club. As long as PG regions are scattered randomly among Mature regions, there will be problems.
Second Life is an 18+ service. Perhaps current mainland should be PIOF/Verified. Maybe it should, but we may loose a few hundred thousand campers who pay for their high speed internet with chickens and pigs for currency because they can't get a credit card or paypal

From: Argent Stonecutter Where did I suggest that? I didn't, did I? In fact the text you quoted said exactly the opposite, didn't it?
Do you believe that requiring verification is a requirement? Is that an aspect of the scheme you consider desirable? I never suggested you did, I suggested the exact opposite scenerio to moving Adult & X rated content from the mainland to a new continent with verification is a lot simpler than moving/blocking all the non-verified people from a current mainland continent. Yep verification is a requirement I desire, infinate unverified anomyous accounts don't provide any verification at all, so allow anyone to access any areas. having the ability to deny unverified people from their land is a grat fature for landowners of adult businesses, an extra more effective layer than the TOS.

You desire verification that doesn't actually work? Verification that infinite anonymous accounts can use without cost or risk, whether the player is 8, 18, or 80? Verification that provides no more protection than checking a "yes, I'm really 18" box? Seriously? Verification that only keeps out honest people is worse than no verification at all.

I desire verification that works even 50% of the time compared to verification that fails 99% of the time. Are passwords that keep honest people out of your data worse than no passwords at all?

From: Tegg Bode I desire verification that works even 50% of the time compared to verification that fails 99% of the time. What we have is verification that fails most of the time that it's actually needed. From: someone Are passwords that keep honest people out of your data worse than no passwords at all? Absolutely: if your security system is so bad that it depends only on the honesty of the person attempting to subvert it, you're better off without the false sense of security. I'm reminded of a computer security cartoon that showed a bunch of barbarians lining up at a "you must be this tall to storm the castle" sign. I'd post it but my google-fu is inadequate to find the image. Anyway... Whatever it is you think you're in favor of, it's not what we've actually got.
