I wish I had the guts to try to access youtube at work.

Edit: turns out I do have the guts to access youtube at work. OK, maybe cows are more dangerous than I thought. I'll see if I can come up with a better analogy.

Manatees. I have never known anyone attacked by a manatee.

At least one who lived to tell about it.

I imagine you would have to put some effort into being attacked by a manatee. First, you would have to go in the water. Avoiding the water is a sure fire way to protect yourself from manatee attack. Then you would have to dawdle quite a bit, since manatees appear to have a top speed of about 1 mph. Floating debris moves faster. Then once you let one catch you, you would have to wait for it to figure out how to attack you. They don't have claws or legs or even teeth as far as I can tell. They seem to just be big blobs of buoyant blubber. (extra credit for alliteration?) Mostly they exist to foul the props of speedboats.

wow that 15 year old girl must be really dumb :D

The teens who fall victims to online predators aren't dumb. In fact, reseach profiling such victims shows that many do have some education about the internet. The teens who becvome victims are usually those with huge family problems or emotional problems.

There is an interesting article about it an issue of the American Psychologist, dispelling a lot of muths about online predators and victims. The article happens to be web-accessible:

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

There are definitely more manatee deaths attributable to humans than human deaths attributable to manatees.

Very interesting and in line with what I know of teenagers from working with them, having been one and being a parent.

Them's the ones. Some Trouts go out to sea and return to freshwater, so maybe those Trouts eat manatee, too.

It's hard to say. There aren't really a lot of documented cases of manatee-eating trouts.

Looks like with all their checks and stuff, it still happens there.

Where I have yet to see reports of an actual instance of it happening in SL on either grid.

Just goes to show that no system will ever be able to stop misuse

Everytime I go to WoW or any other MMO, people insist that EVERYONE there is a male. Heck, you hear that claim here in SL too...
Idiots stuck in a mindset where only men can use gadgets or get into sexual mischief.

Not exactly the way I'd want to have it shown otherwise... but there you go.

Proper parenting is the only way to do it... but people want companies and the government to be parents...

Which I have heard at least on three occasions in RL, once was during an art history class covering nudes in artworks. It was a mother of two kids, and she was, "But I'm so busy. I need the government to keep my kids safe for me." Way to teach 'em personal responsibility Mom.

But I say kudos to the girl's father for actually paying attention to his daughter and her computer usage. And for contacting the appropriate authorities!
