Interestingly enough, in reading about quite a few cases of sexual predators using WoW, none of the predators were caught due to any identity-tracking mechanisms in WoW. In all of the stories I have read, perpetrators were caught to a combination of parental or friends' intervention, victim tattling, and perpetrator's self-identification.

Exactly, they don't have the ability to be an omnipotent watcher of what goes on.

The only times blizzard has been able to react is when someone reports it in world with the tools provided.

Kinda like we do when we see things done like people using child avatars for simulated age play against the rules (something that a certain person saw and refused to report due to it being inconvenient for her ... and claiming LL should have swooped down like and all knowing power and purged them off the grid...)

that is how their system at blizzard works..
They don't monitor anyone..it is all on reports made to Blizz employees..
they don't go around listening in on conversations or anything like have task forces..

as i said i had dated a few Blizzy's that were in the community and i asked many questions because i wanted to know what not to do to get anyone in our group attracting attention to us..
it is all based on being told on and them looking over logs dates and times..without date and time they can't do anything because it is too time consuming to read back on someones general chat in wow..

they will monitor people and guilds if they have been given leads but they don't go looking for them.

It's the only way they can do it. The sheer amount of log files is insane even on the smallest games.

and they still have to be reports that are against TOS..WoW gets flooded with all kinds of support questions besides just reports..each person working for blizz support handels what comes next ..they don't have one group for support of reports and one for omg why am i driffting dead unable to get to a grave yard..or where did my gear go..they are all handled from the same people..

so really if they are not led to something they will never see it unless it is something they are told to monitor..
the reason i had asked so many questions to them was because at the time there were so many rumors of task forces and monitoring of group chat and private chat..
they put a lot of them to rest by saying..we could not do it if we wanted to because there is no time..it's all done by logs dates and times and names given of guilds or players..

As for which would be more of a place that is unsafe for children?Well if you were a kid would you choose WoW or Secondlife to play and if you were a parent would you let your kids play WoW or secondlife??
10 million in WoW half that in in sl with a lot of multie accounts..
it's legal for kids to play WoW and illegal for kids to play secondlife..

It just looks like a matter of doing the math more than who has a busy support system..

Indeed they would put more effort into getting onto the teen grid... or go to the other MMOs where they know there will be underage kids and no real verification of the account information

They would have to have someone on duty for each person on line, in order to monitor everything that happens.

Maybe the problem with pedophiles using SL is when they get to the airport they may find the 15yo girl they are meeting turns out to be a male 43yo truck driver who thought they were meeting a 26yo woman
