well looks like WoW is less safe than SL for youngsters

Having just read the article cited, there is one huge problem with it, which just highlights how misinformation feuls hysteria.

The article identifies the man as a pedophile; however, the girl he enticed was 15 years old.

The mental disorder of pedophilia is, "A sexual preference for children, boys or girls or both, usually of prepubertal or early pubertal age. "

Seducing a minor, whether she is prepubescent, or not, is wrong. However, between the crimes, there is a huge difference in the dynamics of the situations leading to them, and therefore the means of detecting and preventing them.

We'll see what more facts may develop in this particular case, but it's likely that the guy was using WoW as his tool to prey on minors. He probably got the idea in his head once he was there, met this girl, and it occurred to him how easy it might be to take advantage of her.

Proper parenting is a must, but it doesn't protect adults from kids lawyers, not everyone does proper parenting or ever will, open door policies don't work, there needs to be some verfication.

I also know a former Scout Master who was an active mainline junkie (since recovered) whilst active (although not a pedophile to my knowledge).

Except WoW,CoH and other MMO's do respond to reports immediately,usually within the hour. They have good response systems and it is possible to get a BG/Linden within minutes when it is warranted.
