that does not explain why you would not vote for one. From: Beth Dickins Sorry Nina, ballot access laws, prohibitions on attending debates, matching funds, not to forget the bias of the media; these are all ways the Demopulicans keep the 3rd parties out.

From: Nina Stepford that does not explain why you would not vote for one. Because we're afraid one of them may actually win.

From: someone the world won`t give a crap if we dissapear and will just plant another species as dominant Well, as Robert A. Wilson is keen to remind us, the majority of terrans were six-legged. Anyone else notice that a thread pleading for less nationality bashing has turned into a "my government sucks more fest"? I leave you with Tom Lehrer who wrote a song about a tradition so antiquated that I had to look it up: "NCCJ once sponsored week-long National Brotherhood Week, held generally during the third week of February from the 1940s through the 1980s. The assassination of Malcolm X on the first day of National Brotherhood Week in 1965 inspired the Tom Lehrer song "National Brotherhood Week," satirizing race relations in the United States." From: someone Oh, the white folks hate the black folks And the black folks hate the white folks To hate all but the right folks Is an old established rule But during National Brotherhood Week Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark Are dancing cheek to cheek It's fun to eulogize The people you despise As long as you don't let 'em in your school Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks And the rich folks hate the poor folks All of my folks hate all of your folks It's American as apple pie But during National Brotherhood Week New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'Cause it's very chic Step up and shake the hand Of someone you can't stand You can tolerate him if you try Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics And the Catholics hate the Protestants And the Hindus hate the Moslems And everybody hates the Jews But during National Brotherhood Week It's National Everyone-Smile-At- One-Another-hood Week Be nice to people who Are inferior to you It's only for a week, so have no fear Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

Any man who quotes Tom Lehrer is oK in my book. Now pull out Vatican Rag, Who's Next, and Werner Von Braun, 3 of my favorites.
Who's Next
First we got the bomb, and that was good 'Cause we love peace and motherhood Then Russia got the bomb, but that's okay 'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way Who's next
France got the bomb, but don't you grieve 'Cause they're on our side, I believe China got the bomb, but have no fears They can't wipe us out for at least five years Who's next
Then Indonesia claimed that they Were gonna get one any day South Africa wants two, that's right One for the black and one for the white Who's next
Egypt's gonna get one too Just to use on you know who So Israel's getting tense Wants one in self defense "The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm But just in case, we better get a bomb Who's next
Luxembourg is next to go And, who knows, maybe Monaco We'll try to stay serene and calm When Alabama gets the bomb Who's next, who's next, who's next, who's next

From: Keera Woyseck You know i am really tired of all the nationality bashing
Generalizing us all under the area we come from is just wrong and we all know it. We are all people.. not responsible for what our government does or does not do lol. All differerent from each other, no matter if we are from the same country or different. I have made friends here from all over the world.. and guess what.. we are noooo differernt from each other. We get up.. go to work.. pay our bills.. lol our taxes.. eat meals.. hey, we all even use the bathroom, *gasps* i do not see a country distinction in who we are.
The ones that point and say EUROPEAN or AMERICAN i think should take a long hard look at themselves, do you also point and say CATHLOIC or BUDDHIST ?? Probably.. and i am thinking you all need to take a long hard look at your own predjutices.
Guess what guys.. WE ARE ALL THE SAME. BRIAN: Are you the Judean People's Front? REG: Fuck off! BRIAN: What? REG: Judean People's Front. We're the People's Front of Judea! Judean People's Front. Cawk. FRANCIS: Wankers. BRIAN: Can I... join your group? REG: No. Piss off. BRIAN: I didn't want to sell this stuff. It's only a job. I hate the Romans as much as anybody. PEOPLE'S FRONT OF JUDEA: Shhhh. Shhhh. Shhh. Shh. Shhhh. REG: Schtum. JUDITH: Are you sure? BRIAN: Oh, dead sure. I hate the Romans already. REG: Listen. If you really wanted to join the P.F.J., you'd have to really hate the Romans. BRIAN: I do! REG: Oh, yeah? How much? BRIAN: A lot! REG: Right. You're in. Listen. The only people we hate more than the Romans are the fucking Judean People's Front. P.F.J.: Yeah... JUDITH: Splitters. P.F.J.: Splitters... FRANCIS: And the Judean Popular People's Front. P.F.J.: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Splitters. Splitters... LORETTA: And the People's Front of Judea. P.F.J.: Yeah. Splitters. Splitters... REG: What? LORETTA: The People's Front of Judea. Splitters. REG: We're the People's Front of Judea! LORETTA: Oh. I thought we were the Popular Front. REG: People's Front! C-huh. FRANCIS: Whatever happened to the Popular Front, Reg? REG: He's over there. P.F.J.: Splitter!

The Fourteenth Book of Bokonon
10-13-2007 17:14
The Fourteenth Book is entitled "What Can a Thoughtful Man Hope for Mankind on Earth, Given the Experience of the Past Million Years?" It doesn't take long to read The Fourteenth Book. It consists of one word and a period. This is it: "Nothing." From: someone all this nationality dissention.... i wish someone would point out 'we are all the same' to the shiites and sunnis so we can have some global peace for a change.

From: Beth Dickins You can take any of the top 3 canididates from either of the two main parties and the policies will stay the same. More war, higher taxes, more government control of our lives. Anyone who would change this is ignored or disparaged by the main stream media, see the treatment Ron Paul is given.
If I remove my consent, then it is no longer my government. GO RON PAUL!!!!! Sorry...couldn't help myself... ---- This thread got me thinking though, as an American, I remember in grade school being taught how certain other countries were "bad". All propaganda BS. For example, in my school we were taught that Russia was our enemy, so all Russians are bad. Years before that, it was the Japanese and the Germans. Now, we're pointing the finger at the middle east... Imo, we are all the same, the actual people living in all these various countries. Sure, we may look a little different and the laws we are expected to live by are different, but we all eat, sleep, sh*t, etc. like everyone else...its our government(s) that try to piont out the differences. That's what I like about SL, its a melting pot that seems to actually work. Well, it was working until the government(s) had to point out the differences again (VAT, online gambling, blah blah...) and we all get in a tizzy at each other... If you think about it, as soon as you hit that connect button, you are a resident of SL, a Second Lifer. Imo, its not until you hit the log out button that you go back to be an american, or european, or martian or whatever. why can't we all just get along Sorry if I went off thread here...

Third parties fare very badly in first past the post election systems like we have in the US. Most countries that have vigorous third parties have, to some degree, a proportional representation system, rather than first past the post. With the winner take all system we have, it's very hard for any third party/independent to get more than a toehold. Of course, it happens -- Vermont had a socialist senator for a number of years, there have been prominent "independents" as governors and, to a much lesser degree, as senators ... but trying to get the kind of traction needed to become a truly viable third party is extremely hard in a first past the post system.

Yes we all eat sleep and poop like everyone else, but what we believe between our ears is markedly different both within cultures and, to a much greater degree, as between cultures. Worldviews matter: they shape everything from how we view others, to moral rules, to life goals, to child rearing and everything in between. Sure, there are commonalities, but the differences in outlook and perspective between the various major cultural regions of the world are marked, pronounced and persistent -- it's simply not the case that "we are all the same", in my view.

From: Beth Dickins Not voting is a legitimate choice. Why give your consent to one of two evils? By not voting you can be saying "I remove my consent from the government." Remember the lesser of two evils is still evil. then those who don't vote truley negate thier rights to complain about said govenrment. i hear this "reasoning" so many times and it really ticks me off. yes you do have the choice to stick your head in the sand, but rememeber by NOT voting you( and i dont mean You personally) are giving consent for the current regime to continue, and slapping those in the face who worked hard and tirelessly and risked thier own lives, so women, and minorities CAN vote.

there is another option wich is to overthrow the government in place but it's very hard today, and brainwashing of the masses work very well to ensure everybody will fear the government enought to be scared of contesting it's authority

From: Ciaran Laval Oh come on Keera nationality bashing is as old as, well nationalities. Sometimes it goes overboard, we get into rounds of "My country is better than your country". This is a chicken and egg situation. Sometimes it's just a bit of banter. We all know when we reflect on it, that it was silly to get involved. There's an unwritten rule that it's ok for someone from their own country to bash it, but people go on the defensive if someone from another country makes those criticisms. Worst of all is how at times it's managed to side the English with the French. Nelson and Napolean will be turning in their graves. Of course all that will change in a few hours when the rugby starts! What I hate hearing is "my country sucks." From anybody, about their own country. Now THAT gets OLD. coco

I think the rest of the world is just envious of our progressive American electoral system, that's all. Why in our country, anyone can be elected president, even children, horse thieves and war criminals! How boring it must be [with an occasional exception for Italy and Australia, and the perennial exception of ... umm, no better not say; people from the totally fubar'ed countries can get really loud and nasty] to have restrained, responsible and thoughtful leadership.
Progress I tell you, progress!
