From: Dakota Tebaldi Imagine a personal webpage from the mid-90s, with a legion of animated gifs, scrolling and flickering text, stupid mini-games and search engines that nobody would ever use, and the like. Why did people use all that stuff? Well, MySpace didn't exist then, so people had to make their own back then. ========== So, out profile pages are on the web, and you can use a service to monitor changes in web pages, so you should be able to get a notification about when someone you want to monitor changes their profile picture, and keep records of old versions of them, etc. That probably has the potential to be annoying to some. Also, you know how people will report some kind of problem, like inappropriate content on a neighboring parcel, and folks drop by to file an additional abuse reports? Well, a few profile picture displays on the annoying parcel might deter folks from dropping by.

Of course I remember Geocities. I still have a Geocities page, http://www.geocities.com/suezannecbaskerville/. Haven't looked at in ages. There's an old SL starter guide there, at http://www.geocities.com/suezannecbaskerville/starter_guide.pdf, might be of historical interest to SL fans. I remember when RealAudio was introduced, man was that high tech, streaming music. Woa. Geocities had a grid of pages, a virtual geography of sorts. It's somewhat of a predecessor to SL and other grid based virtual worlds in some ways.
