I fail to understand why a store or club owner would put up an item that would have the potential to drive customers/patrons away...

I have never heard anyone say "Oh lets shop/club here becuase they have a cool profile picture viewer!"

I have heard people say "I dont like going there because it has one of those stupid picture viewer" however.
My guess.... Unaware. It's basically "Oh, cool! I can put up dynamic content that interacts with my guests/customers." Kinda like those little roving greeters and chatty welcome mats. (^_^)

But, I'm sure these people are not on the forums to hear the gripes about it. Probably have a descent customer/guest base that they don't have to worry about it. And are probably not being flooded with IM/notecard complaints about peoples' "right to privacy". (^_^)

I don't get this whole mess about profile pictures. A profile is no place for private or hidden information, particularly because it can be viewed by anyone in the entire grid with a few clicks of the mouse. Or, at least a few letters of your avatar's first-last names. (=_=)

I, for one, like them. My profile pic is meant to be publicly viewed. If someone wants to see it, project it, drool over it, whatever... Fine by me. I put it out there so you can have it. If I didn't want someone to see or have my profile pic, I would have left it out of my profile. Simple as that. (^_^)

Same thing with my avatar name, and any other text available in my profile. People have tried to use my own words against me. Including statements in my profile. Of course, they failed, because I kinda stand by the things I say. But, I can see how that can be a problem for the easily butthurt. (^_^)

If I got any grief from things I said, placed, or pictured in my profile, I deserved it. I'm sure anyone with a descent collection of stalkers understands what I mean. (^_^)y

Aside from people telling me my opinion is retrded and an SL Profile is not private so I shouldn't have a problem with these, as the OP I thought I'd clarify.

As some have said, if someone has these boards I think they should ask permission if your name and picture can be posted. I have no problem with that and if it's a place I like I would probably agree.

On the other hand, I am very new to SL and exploring. I am checking out new places all the time and if I go somewhere and it's a place I don't care for, I don't see why my profile pic of things should serve as a free endorsement/advertisement for their place.

I also look like a big mess right now compared to other avatars. Some of you have been here a long time, but if you can try to remeber back to when you were new, your avatar might not have looked so nice. Mine is plain goofy, but I liked having a picture for anyone who was interested enough to click. Not to just be splashed up on a board at random.

Bottom line, have the board, don't have the board, I don't care.

But for those places that do, please ask if we'd like our pictures up or not.

Im more than game to because frankly, ive had it with this moron game, and after dec 17 am not spending another dime and closing all my lands and LEAVING.

Hi Ciera,

I saw this post and your other one about the Lindens stealing your money when you leave.

Congrats on your pregnancy and if you have any unwanted Linden dollars left when you leave on Dec. 17th I'd be grateful to have them as I am broke and clothed in a mish mash of freebies. :)

They are actually supposed to ask. They may not know it because one script that does the profile pic thing was in very wide circulation before LL suddenly decided it violated ToS--but it's not like they told anybody about it, except those who got Abuse Reported. Anyway, whether the owner realizes it or not, it might actually save them some trouble if you mention this, to save them an AR.

You're way out ahead of where many of us started. I had a goofy avatar and a goofy profile pic for a *long* time before I even knew any better. (Okay, bad example; mine are still goofy, but now it's taken me years of study to achieve this level of serene goofiness. :p)

Placing the picture in your profile is giving permission for it to be publicly viewed by default. (^_^)

In fact. I just looked at the profiles of everyone on this thread. Nice pics and groups all! Now I know a little more about each of you. How do you feel about that? (^_^)y

Exactly. Imagine a personal webpage from the mid-90s, with a legion of animated gifs, scrolling and flickering text, stupid mini-games and search engines that nobody would ever use, and the like. Why did people use all that stuff? Because it was there, and people hadn't grown out of it yet.

Give it time.

Doesn't bother me at all, that's why I put it there, giving you my permission to view it as part of my profile by default.

I didn't give you permission to place my picture on a board in your shop to advertise that I'd been there, and to advertise your outlet. Which is a different thing entirely. It's my property, I don't want it used like that thanks. I'm sorry you're having trouble grasping that, and that you feel those of us who mind our pictures being used in this way are "easily butt-hurt".

The first time I encountered one of these, I felt like Nic...very uneasy seeing "my" face splashed up there on the wall, without so much as a "by your leave".

On reflection, though, I decided it wasn't all that bad. After all, I made my avatar to be looked at, I love seeing pics of myself, I love modeling...why should I mind this use?

My noob friend was very concerned when this happened to her the other day...her profile pic showed up outside a coffee shop she visited on a "WANTED" poster. A joke, of course...but she didn't know enough to know that.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

The roving greeters give me the creeps, but they seem to have pretty much died out. I don't mind an IM greeting from a welcome mat; it sure beats a blue popup dialog begging me to join my 26th group for the 33rd time today.

I don't buy the "it's my profile pic and you've no right to use it" argument, at least not as a justification for it being a ToS violation. It may be rude to use it, but it shouldn't be a ToS violation, any more than a text list of the names of the past n visitors to the store. For that matter, there's absolutely nothing violating ToS if a merchant has a bot taking snapshots of every visitor, uploading them and posting a gallery of who came when and how much they bought. That would be stupid and rude, but not a violation.

If you don't like profile pic displays, that's your perogative. It's also your perogative not to go where you find them.

I think it's silly to be bugged by something like this. No doubt I'm bugged by silly stuff myself, so I won't thrown any stones.

I think it's idiotic that it's considered a ToS violation. If that were true, the web pages showing profile pics would be ToS violations as well. They can't have it both ways. (/me feels comfortable throwing stones at LL, since he's not a service provider ...)

hehe - nope, I'm another. In RL and SL both... Though admittedly I usually just respond to things that speak or move for me (cash registers, automatic doors), I don't initiate these conversations...

Honestly, Immy, you should be showing off that frightening child vampire killer I'm Gonna Eat Your Head picture you have.

Now THAT would be an awesome picture to view bigger than life on some club's profile viewer.

I keep changing my profile picture, just for kicks. I believe these are my current ones:
