There should be some kind of warning for the name/picture boards

I just thought of an awesome idea! Take one of those picture boards and give it the functionality of an evil titler by having some floating text above the picture that anyone could anonymously change. Or maybe make several floating texts around the picture so everyone can make a comment.

Oooh I can't wait to see that in a club. Sooo funny.

I don't really have an issue with those.

My name is above my head all the time and my profile picture is just a click away.... and as I am a heavy profile reader, I see them anyway. It is not that they display any information that is not openly available.

I am in RL very concerned about privacy and related things, but this information is there openly available. So no privacy offense according to me.
As far as I know you cannot hide your name in SL and if you don't want people to see your profile picture, don't put anything there.

As said, no issue to me.

People can see you standing in your local supermarket as well, but the store doesn't put your name and picture up an a big sign outside. I find those things mildly annoying and usually don't patronize places that use them.

The difference is that in SL your name is all the time very viewable above your head already.

And apart from all the secret camera recording you in the stores and alike, I know enough examples of big screens showing people who visiting the store....

We have one at our school, but I scipted it so you have to click on the "projector" and agree to have your profile and name displayed, and it also has a button to remove it if you change your mind. It's just a fun toy.

I like them. I put one up at my club. When I'm working at my club, I don't have time to look in people's profiles, but a lot of people put a lot of thought into their profile pictures, and if it's up on the screen, I'll take notice. Many people have shopped, cropped, & photoshopped for their profile pictures... so it's kinda cool to see them displayed, imho.

And... my thought is... if ya don't like your picture splashed up on the screen... change the picture... remove it... or unclick "show in Search". Easy.

It's ridiculous that this is considered a TOS offense. Essentially if you don't want your profile information to be publicly scanned from the web then unmark show on the web otherwise your essentially giving permission. These are probably being scanned for out of world purposes which LL isn't stopping at all which makes it all the more pointless because they're only stopping one use because they can because it's in-world.

It always seems to surprise people when I shout "Hi there" from 89M away. I love my scanner.

As for the profile viewers, I don't care. It really doesn't matter that my picture is splashed on some board because people are gonna see the picture anyway. Not sure why the picture viewer bothers people, to be honest. You're just an avatar that we can all see.

If you don't like them, just put something really offensive in your profile picture and hang out near one of those boards in a crowded place. Someone will eventually get the hint and take the thing down.

Agreed!

OMG! Someone is broadcasting my avatar! Oh Whoa is me!! Now every stalker in the world will know what I look like in RL!!

LOL!

Ohs Nos! Ppl can sees me avatar!!

Of course they are but human nature is to insult and belittle people who have opinions and views that aren't the same as theirs.

That's because their opinions are stupid.

Surely, if you've got a profile pic, either SL or RL, you're willing to let people see you.

Think of the drama, if the board showed your RL profile pic?!?! Oooooh...

I don't see what the problem is if you enable your Profile to be viewed in search. There are many websites that have your profile pic in their site also without permission.
If you allow to be shown in search then you allow your pic to be parsed in search programs.

I didnt see Linden Labs ask me if I give them permission to show my pic from my parcel of land in their search. They Just assume that it is okay since i put it there. And I Click "Show In Search For $30L" wink wink. And not only do they parse my photo and display it . they also watermark it with a Second Life Search text.

I am sorry, I'm not being critical of you (for a change) but I think that this is hysterical coming from someone whose SL business is predicated on virtual pregnancy.

i think they are kind of neat..
i don't see a problem with a store or club owner or land owner having one of these on their property if they want them..
if you ask me walking into a club and a bot shouting your name..HELLO CEKA CIANCI WELCOME TO SUCH AND SUCHES!!!! is a lot worse than this thing that shows your picture for a few seconds..

where is the violation in the TOS for these pic things anyways?

Wow. I haven't posted in here for ages, and this is a perfect example of why. What the hell is wrong with you? Someone doesn't hold the same opinion as you, and you say it's retarded. Do you need to be so confrontational?? Is it impossible for you to imagine that stuff that doesn't bother you might bother other people? I'd like to bet that there are things that bother you that I find perfectly acceptable.

I find these picture boards mildly annoying, and as a matter of principle would rather be asked before my picture is used on them, but I'm not going to AR one. I don't want to have to take my profile out of search just because I don't want it on one of those boards without my permission. It's not a big deal, but it's irritating. I cannot understand why you (or anyone else) would have a problem with me (or anyone else) holding this opinion and sharing it with others.

I don't usually get so cross about things, sorry folks, this just gets up my nose.

There isn't a "show on web" checkbox anymore. That is part of the problem.

It used to be the case that being included within the inworld search and displaying on the web were seperated - i.e. I could choose my profile not to be on the web, but still be found in the in world search. The new googlebox search removes that feature. If you want to be found inworld you also have your profile visible outside SL over the web.

We've already had a post from someone who would prefer not to have their profile available over the web, but needs to do so, as otherwise their customers complain that her profile is disabled (presumedly these are relatively new SL users who haven't discovered the old People tab in search).

Also, because the checkbox is now "Show in search", many users will be unaware that having that box ticked also gives permission for the profile to be available over the web. Worse, is that when LL introduced the new search, it was switched on for accounts by default including those people who had previously unchecked show on web!

Is this new behavior documented somewhere? (That would save me having to try this with an alt and waiting until the crawler bestirs itself to update.)

Here's how I *thought* it worked: Unchecking "Show in seach" (née "Show on web";) removed the html page from Seach All results, but the Resident Profile listing is still returned, same as for Search People.

It doesn't work that way anymore?

The reason this all sorta matters is that the profile pic is possibly the least "privacy-invasive" part of the profile that makes it into web search. The html page itself includes the SL DoB and "About" text from the 2nd Life tab, and the entries in the Picks tab. (For example, mine is visible at http://world.secondlife.com/resident/72435d55-873c-4617-b6ea-9a707d1f6800.) But then there are results returned for everybody else's searchable profile that mentions you in About or Picks, and groups of which you are a visible member (I guess... some groups anyway).

So, for practical purposes, the pic may be annoying or even inconvenient to some, but as "privacy" goes, the pic is kinda the least of having one's profile included in Seach.

Word! Do a google search on your real life names, folks. If you have a picture or any text ANYWHERE on the web, you will show up. It's the nature of the interwebz.

To be honest, I like seeing profile pics. Some of them are really nicely done. I don't see it as a privacy violation at all.

I fail to understand why a store or club owner would put up an item that would have the potential to drive customers/patrons away...

I have never heard anyone say "Oh lets shop/club here becuase they have a cool profile picture viewer!"

I have heard people say "I dont like going there because it has one of those stupid picture viewer" however.
