There should be some kind of warning for the name/picture boards

I really dislike the boards in certain places that show your name and picture in your profile as the last person who visited.
I took down my profile picture for now because of this, but even so my name is displayed.
I know I'm an avatar, but doesn't the avatar deserve some privacy?
Is there some way to elect to stay off these boards? You never know who has them until you get there and it is too late.

I have to say these really bug me too. I've only been to one place so far that has actually asked when I tped in if it was ok to put up my picture. The store that asked said they were doing so to be in compliance with the TOS, but I haven't looked to see just what the TOS says relating to this issue.

Yes, it's actually been interpreted as a ToS violation to use those pictures without asking for an opt-in by the resident, so an Abuse Report will get the object that does it removed. (I happen to think that's insane, but that's just my opinion.)
If it works the way it's supposed to, the pictures also wouldn't appear (nor any other information from the resident's Profile), if the "Show in Search" checkbox is cleared on the Profile. Not 100% sure this works, though, because once the thing makes it to the web, it could take a long time for it to get swept out. (I just tried it with mine and there weren't instantaneous results.)

Your picture won't show up that way. I think your name still does, but it's not like people can't see you standing there anyway. This will also break picks freebies that give stuff just to group members. Or take your picture out of your profile. You are aware than anyone can already see it? Isn't that the whole point of having a profile picture?

People can see you standing in your local supermarket as well, but the store doesn't put your name and picture up an a big sign outside. I find those things mildly annoying and usually don't patronize places that use them.

Ugh! I hate those things. Yes, I understand that anyone who pulls up my profile can SEE my profile pic, but having it splashed all over some giant board without a by-your-leave just irritates the daylights out of me. (Oddly, I think if I were given the choice to opt in, I probably would - "yeah, sure, knock yourself out, thanks for asking." Now that I think about it, I think the difference lies in my ability to make a choice. I choose to put it in my profile, but when someone takes my picture and displays it someplace I didn't know about and didn't intend without my prior knowledge, it feels like having my space invaded. It probably shouldn't bug me as much as it does... I doubt anyone even glances at them much, so probably no one even notices my profile pic up there...

Let me get this straight, you are wandering around obviously public places and you are worried about your privacy? Seriously? You do realize that anyone in the area can see you already, right? Your name also pops up on any radars in the area. Do you have a problem with that as well?

I don't know about you, put personally I don't have my name hovering over my head when I go to the RL supermarket. I do have a picture of me on my driver's liscense, but people have to do more than click on me to be able to view it.

I just remembered another instance I heard of regarding these display boards that could have not-so-happy effects:
A forum member who was normally a child avatar was shopping in a skin store, and had put on an adult shape. However, when the profile pic display got to that person, it showed the picture in the profile, which was a child avatar. I understand it caused some consternation among the other customers present.
A small thing, really, but there's just no need for that. A person should not have to alter their profile just to go on a quick shopping run - and I don't think changes to the pic propagate instantly, either.

SL isn't RL.
Personally, I like them because it gives people an opportunity to see how awesome I am.
Either uncheck "show in search", put more thought into your avatar picture, or don't use one.
I think that goes beyond just those photo boards. People can and do look at your profile. Probably a lot more than see you on one of those photo boards.

It's not so much that I care if anyone sees my profile picture -- I wouldn't put it in my profile if I did. It's more that it's kind of like you are being forced into endorsing this place when I don't think I've ever actually ended up purchasing anything at any of the stores that had one. Not that anyone in particular is going to care where I shop anyway. As to the "Show in Search" check box, I can't do that... it got accidentally unchecked at some point, and I started getting some customers saying they were getting messages that my profile was set to private, and they couldn't contact me. I don't shop that often anyway -- I just noticed on a recent search for something that these boards had started popping up.

I landed somewhere a few days ago (I forget where) and a popup asked me if I would give permission to have my profile picture displayed. I opted for 'No' - just to check - and the display didn't update.
I thought that was good. It's just a couple extra of script lines.

It always seems to surprise people when I shout "Hi there" from 89M away. I love my scanner. As for the profile viewers, I don't care. It really doesn't matter that my picture is splashed on some board because people are gonna see the picture anyway. Not sure why the picture viewer bothers people, to be honest. You're just an avatar that we can all see. If you don't like them, just put something really offensive in your profile picture and hang out near one of those boards in a crowded place. Someone will eventually get the hint and take the thing down.

I'm quite happy to see my pic op on a big screen - after all, I'm at the location in person, and anyone can click on my profile and see the same pic, which is also the same as the one I use on these forums. I was a little miffed though when I was at one place and I was wearing the same top as in my profile pic up on a big screen!

An easy way to get these things banned, post a porno pic in your profile. Problem solved!

As far as I knew offensive profile photos were ARable and I can pretty much bet you that more people are viewing your profile in general than will see it on some photo board.

There are minor consequences to these boards. I think the picture stays around until someone else comes along, so you get to see the last person who was there, maybe days ago until it grabs your picture.
I discovered this when my alt was out shopping and found something more appropriate for me. He sent me a landmark logged off, and when I logged on and TP'd there much later, his picture was still on the board. So it could conceivably show people where you've been even when you're no longer there. Another weird aspect is they seem to be triggered by your camera rather than your avatar. Sometimes in big malls, rather than walk around I like to stand in one place and cam into the stores. My camera triggers the boards and it grabs my picture when I'm really nowhere near. I guess this makes sense as you can purchase things from a distance too.

It would be very cool if there were some way for a script to tell where a random avatar's cam is looking, but unless the scripted object is attached to or sat on by the avatar, that won't work. (In this case I suspect it's just running a 96m sensor for new agents within the nearest 16, or possibly responding to collision with a phantom invisible "visitor detector" prim at the landing point or some remote location.)
