the reason that the skin is at the brightness it is is because there isnt a way to them to make it 'less fullbright' at night. this was one of the discussions during windlight betas, and the av skin brightness was problematic. the current brightness is supposedly a compromise that fits between night and day.

Hi Nina, can you post more info about this design issue? Also, clothing layers seem to have the full-bright setting, so is it an intrinsic feature of avatar skins that don't allow this?

I think you're missing the point. People that wear face lights care about how other people see their avatar... so... how would windlight settings effect that?

how does a facelight do that?

Being that many folks probably do not even have local lighting on.

Personally I think (think, not a fact) that people who wear facelights do it for themselves, because we can not control how others see us.

(I turn off local lighting for the most part and if I turn it on, I turn off attached lights, so I never have to see those awful things)

Proper shadows are probably coming to Second Life in the not-too-distant future - the latest release candidate viewer has them and they look really good when they work properly, although they are unstable at the moment. With shadows, a full-bright skin and clothes would look really odd.

A full-bright skin would have no modelling by light and shade, only by what's drawn onto it, and most skins would look bad if they were full-bright. Also they'd look really bad at night, unless you want to be a green glowing alien.

And they don't work at all on most video cards.

They would already look really odd. What we need is not "full bright", but a reversion to the skin as it was in 1.8 or so, with subtle highlights at most.

What totally puzzles me is why some people care so much what their own avatars look like while at the same time having such blatant disregard for everyone else's avatars, and the build itself.

This is why I use Windlight, and have the setting to show attached lights turned off. So I don't see anybody's facelights, I just see everyone's avatar in the best possible natural light.

To keep the day/night cycle, you have to make a complete set of new presets (12AM, 3AM, ... 9PM) and then use the day cycle editor to poke the new presets into the right place in the day cycle, then save the day cycle. And every time you upgrade the client you have to go into the day cycle editor and set up and save your day cycle again. :p

And this is an IMPROVEMENT. You used to have to copy out your XML presets and copy them back in again every time you updated.

Not necessarily so.....I didn't have to re-do my day cycle with the last update. I have not a clue why this was the case.....but it retained it.....and I've never lost my windlight settings with an update, except once, eons ago. I really wish I knew why it gets dropped for some and not for others.

But on this whole avatar skin issue.....e-gads.....if the goal is to make avatar skin act more like human skin then the terrible shadows are pretty much accurate in certain lighting. And as for face lights being just an annoying ego based accessory....I disagree. The lights that look like a walking search light, yeah....those are terrible (often accompanied by loudly clicking high heels lol) but, cripes, I made one that is so so subtle that it hardly registers as light.....but it at least smooths the shadows.

As for ego.....well..... aint nothin but ego in SL....lets be real here....we all only ever see what WE want to see on OUR OWN screen.....so, to argue the existence of vanity or ego is kind of silly. Yeah of course I want my avatar, and the entire atmosphere to look as appealing as possible while I'm doing my thing.....that's kind of the gist of SL. But, of all the things we can do so that others might see us in a more appealing way, a face light is just one option. And since so many don't use local lights anyway....we're sorta really only left with our own egos to entertain in the end..... :p like it or not. ;)

Of course it's vanity and ego, but that vanity and ego wants other people to see us looking our best. Some people are, due to a lack of information or understanding, very bad at judging what they need to do to achieve that goal. Me, I check out my avatar and my builds under multiple settings to be sure I'm not screwing up... I've done that ever since I discovered that my nice Extrovirtual magpie avatar looked really freaky when you had shiny enabled... and I had no idea because I couldn't handle shiny on my computer at the time.

Some people don't know they don't look good on your screen, but don't confuse that with them not WANTING to look good on your screen.

And terrible shadows would only be accurate if the human body was built to a low resolution mesh and the human eye had as little adaptability to varying light conditions as a camera. :)

or what about the ones who have 8 little orbs floating around them, using all the local light resources we have

(even one takes away one light resource from each person close enough to see it)
that is why I keep attached lights off when I turn local lighting on, and for the most part, keep local lights off anyway.
