From: Qie Niangao Always glad to chat, Jumpy, but I don't want give the wrong impression: I was never involved with this resident review thing; I just remember Robin talking about it at one of her office hours. And I wasn't the one who raised the topic, so I probably wasn't paying very close attention, even. Maybe Ciaran remembers more from that meeting. (As you know, Robin isn't Robin Linden anymore, more's the pity. If I were she, I'd scrupulously forget any details of what happened behind the Linden event horizon.) iunno she still seems to enjoy sl or so it seem s from following her tweets

From: Viktoria Dovgal It was a little more ominous than that, an anonymous pool of residents would help to decide who on the list of 14 day bans would get permabanned. I don't think this was a binding vote though. The old SL newsletter seems to have been purged but there is still a copy of LL's explanation in the wayback machine. http://web.archive.org/web/20060328100225/secondlife.com/newsletter/2006_02_15/blotter.phpAnd yeah, whatever was governance does seem to have been quietly absorbed into support, and apart from a couple of fluffy recent blog entries there isn't much information available on who's doing what these days :/ thanx for the info victoria now that is spooky considering all the 14 day suspension ive endured. maybe the got rid of it. but my 'crimes' never had a pattern lol. and i knew that gteam always forgave ya after the new year i.e. they ditched your 'history' plus ive madea conscious effort to be good

my opinion on permaban is the same as my opinion on death penalty, if you can't guarantee innocents won't be punished you can't have any permanent punishment

From: Briana Dawson This is not true.
I had a 3 day ban in 2004 and it was a machine ban that stopped ALL my alts from logging in. And all i did was pass around a note card to 5-6 people.
So it is totally arbitrary whether or not the IP ban/machine ban, or whatever a hash ban is. I am sure there are some particular standards they use for extreme cases, but whether or not they ban you beyond one account for a trivial matter is totally arbitrary. Fine, reset your broadband router (or disconnect and redial on a modem), get a new IP, and keep on trucking. Meanwhile, the next poor slob who gets your IP address that wants to log into SL won't be able to. That's why they don't (really, can't) use long-duration IP bans, except for highly specific cases. They haven't had a "hash ban" before 2007, which is when they implemented the machine/viewer hash code.

That's why the real griefers aren't even remotely deterred by any/all of their technical measures. no. linden lab can make it so your ip can't create new alts. its not impossible to get back on but getting around a hash ban isnt easy, and allows for a measure of detection. then there are people snitching u out. once permanetly banned any suspected alts are disabled too. makes PLAYING sl tedious. im not talking about the permanetly banned disposable alts but rather people who do in fact want to play sl with some longevity. should they be allowed back after some penance. should they be removed if their atls are discovered?

In one word..... no.
But chances are they've already made their 6th alt anyway.

From: Jumpman Lane no. linden lab can make it so your ip can't create new alts. Well, my IP changes, so that kind of block would not only be useless, it would prevent other people from legitimately registering when they got the blocked IP. So, while they can block IPs, they rarely do, because of this specific problem. From: someone its not impossible to get back on but getting around a hash ban isnt easy, and allows for a measure of detection. then there are people snitching u out. once permanetly banned any suspected alts are disabled too. makes PLAYING sl tedious. Never stopped any serious griefers. Between ShoopedLife and anonymous proxies, there's no 100% effective way to stop them. From: someone im not talking about the permanetly banned disposable alts but rather people who do in fact want to play sl with some longevity. should they be allowed back after some penance. should they be removed if their atls are discovered? Yeah, I know; I'm talking in the segue about what mechanisms LL uses to stop people from continuing to try to get back in SL after a permaban. Most people aren't going to bother.

Most people aren't going to bother. wellwe found one. which is wy i asked if they should deserve another chance. the guy buried a linden with a spawner and crasshed a sim. had no tech saavy and so was "gone " from sl until he could afford a nother computer ( a few months). he laid low for A YEAR, scared he'd get 'outed' as a perma banned alt. has now begun to be interested in teaching on the teen grid. does some one who is "suddenly" productive in a good way deserve a seocond chance?
