Funny, innit, that most of the people who seem to be advocating for the squatters' rights, or don't think squatting is a big deal, spend most of their time on islands, where this is much less likely to happen due to vigilant estate owners?

Oh, estate owners are vigilant but it still occurs. It doesn't happen often, but tenants will contact me if someone puts up a covenant-violating build and half of the time it turns out to be a NPIOF squatter who happened to find a spot of public-build land on my island. It REALLY sucks that all parcels default to public-build-on when they change hands.

We've also had a couple tenants wonder why their remaining prims were so low only to find that someone had tucked a skybox up a few hundred meters over their home. The Options tab is your friend.

well, i dont have any additional tools or powers to deal with this on the islands either.
its really as simple as enabling autoreturn.

yep, because it's too much to ask for folks to show manners and actually ask before they utilize resources someone else is paying for... due to a sense of "it's okay to do so since it's a digital world"

wow. youre the guy over on slu complaining about ppl taking screenshots with you in them and comparing it to rl peeping, telephoto lenses, thermal imaging, and carrying on about lawsuits.
seriously mate, sl and rl are two different things. i doubt you yiff irl so this should already be obvious to you. or do you only insist upon the sl/rl comparison when it serves your purposes?
or perhaps i should take a page out of your book and mash sl/rl together then surmise that you are in favour of shagging rl dogs?

yes. i think it is fine and dandy for people to build on build enabled land.
yes, i am ok with people building and furnishing skyboxes on land they dont own. as long as these people arent uglying up the ground or rezzing things to grief, i have zero issue with it. i dont think its rude, i dont think its disrespectful, i dont think it is indicative of a sense of entitlement. if you or someone else doesnt want somebody building on your land, turn on autoreturn already and be done with it.

Right and wrong don't change because you refer to digital worlds and not physical worlds.

Is it right to go to someone's land and build stuff without permission?

You haven't asked permission to utilize resources that someone has paid for.

As for auto-return. Go buy land and see what the default options are once you do. Now consider how many buy land and don't yet know how to change things there.

Taking photos in a private club in SL after being told not to is the same as walking into a bar and taking snapshots. It's an invasion of reasonable privacy of users, and as stated in the KB grounds for an AR. Use of those photos is still up in the air, fair use only goes so far as does the rule of public accessibility due to camera restraints being tweaked (similar to using advanced optics in the real world).

Real life laws still apply to second life as well, just ask those that have faced them. I am sure you would get an earful from many about how hard lawsuits can hit you related to second life.

Can you edit/move somebody else's objects on your own land? I don't mean just returning, I mean like moving a house (for instance) a few feet this way or that way?

If so, I think I wanna buy some land and leave it build-enabled just to encourage some squatter to set up there. Then, when they build stuff, I'm going to randomly screw with them. Like, the next time they log in, their house will be 20 meters east of where it was. And the next day it will be upside down and stuck in a mountain. Or at like 10,000m or something. Or retextured with something funny. I'd never return the stuff - just play with it whenever they weren't around. That would so rock.

Nope, they have to deed to group or give you edit rights before you can do anything to their items

Well that sucks. I guess I won't be buying land after all. What good is owning land if you can't screw with people on your own property?

Dear Dakota, you can mess with their stuff, to a degree. You can build around or on it. Or delete it - the bonus of deleting the object means that it goes to their trash, not lost & found, and they don't get a message alerting them to the item's removal.

Well you can actually... remove or modify their ability to build, run scripts, push, turning these on and off; set auto return to 1 hour so they waste time building only to have it all returned when they don't expect it; and you can freeze them, and or eject and ban. Set your land to allow damage and you can blow them away. There is a lot you can do.
