This thread rocks. Almost makes me wanna squat just for the heck of it.

QFT! I'm trying not to giggle too loudly. I just bought/rented land two nights ago and this reminds me to put auto return on. And too it makes me want to go find a place to squat just for the shiznet.

not necessarily true. on any reasonable size plot (larger than 512) i can always undercut the combined price of premium and tier due to three facts:
1. the renter does not need to spend $ on premium
2. i get discounted tier for bulk land holdings
3. i get the 10% group allowance, and can thus juggle tier donations
From: Iyoba Tarantal

If you can't find somewhere to squat, buying is much cheaper than renting. If you can pull the cash together to pay for an annual premium membership it is $6.00/month. At 512m2 there is no land tier. The land itself was about $8.12. There are bargains to be had. All this comes out to 35-40L per week. You are not going to be able to rent 512 m for that.

mate this is complete scaremongering.
there is no way in hell an AR like that would fly, no temp ban would ever be lodged, and no black mark would be recorded. the absolute worst thing that could happen is the squatter could be banned from the parcel
i also disagree with the idea that somehow a squatter is stealing prims. really they are doing nothing worse than using an unused resource, which the owner can reclaim at any time they wish. i reckon if he wants to squat then fine, he should squat. he can spend a couple of months squatting, learning the ropes of sl. maybe he will get tired of having to move his home or having it autoreturned and will by then have the experience to earn L$ to pay rent or whatnot.
but the talk of AR's, bans, and black marks is a bit over the top.

I completely agree, I see nothing wrong with a landless newbie doing this. No harm is being done. If the owner returns and is bothered by it, they can easily remove everything and set auto return. I have not seen anything in the TOS that indicates this could be ARable unless it was done in a harrasing way.

When I was new I learned how to build, practicing on unused land, as the sandboxes were a mad house. Even after I got my first small piece of land I would occasionally go out and use other larger parcels as sandboxes if there were not enough prims available on mine. No one ever complained, I was polite and careful not to disturb anyone who was home. No avatars were ever harmed by this practice.

There ARE two sims that are set up like a free for all sandbox that doesn't reset for about 1 week or 1 month. I can't recall the name. Anyways it gets full in a few hours after the place resets.

I can't recall the name of these places atm, but I've run across several places over the months that are free small apartments. Some are specifically for newbies and if one is over 30 days (maybe even 60 days) old, the doors won't open and a message appears why.

Others are on a first come, first serve basis with a note to please respect the apt. if someone's stuff is in there but any empty apt. is free for anyone to use.

And as others have pointed out, if you look around and read the classified forums, you can very often find a small, starter place for a couple hundred L a week...sometimes less. (Again as pointed out, without a credit card, you would need a way to make some lindens.)

Another idea is to find a private place at NCI. My alts are homeless and any time I want to change or rez items I find an out-of-the-way place there and have never been bothered.

And there are payment alternatives: paypal, prepaid cards, even wire. Use them.

I was wondering if there is a place where I can setup my house for free, without auto-return (like sandboxes). If anybody knows a place like that, please post it here, I would really like to have my own home in SL (I don't have a credit card to buy land). Thanks in advance, and sorry if this question has been posted again.

Don't right off sandboxes. You can group objects as a single inventory item even if they cannot link (e.g a house with furniture) just by highlighting multiple objects and clicking take or take copy. Then all you need do is rez a single object after auto-return - literally drag and drop and 5 seconds later you're back up and running.

Find a reasonably quiet and pleasant sandbox and chill out there - they do exist; I know of one, but sadly if I post it on this forum it will quickly cease to be both quiet and pleasant what with all you forum riff-raff that will flock there :D

It's Noob Island. They provide furnished apartment units free for use. Any empty unit is fair game, and you are considered the 'occupant' for as long as you are logged in and remain in that unit. The moment you leave the unit, whether you TP out or log out of SL, it becomes 'vacant' again for others to use.

You can rez stuff there too. Auto-return is on but it's set to quite a long period, I think... I used to stand on my pose stand for ages, sorting inventory, and it would get sent back to me the moment I got off it, lol.

EDIT: You don't have to be a newbie to get access to the apartment units. It's open to all residents.

This is actually because autoreturn doesn't return items you're sitting on. If you had rezzed the stand but never got on it, it would have returned much earlier.

As for the credit card issue: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/06/18/payments-by-bank-wire/

Otherwise, good luck on the hunting.

Autoreturn is enabled on my land, so you can cross it off your list and save a little time.

when i owned land i used to let squatters stay on it all of the time, as long as they used a minimal amount of prims and didnt cause too much trouble

most just used it to biuld on, like a sandbox, had a few that lived there a week or two and had many great parties :) (damn wandering techno raves)

Some of you people are absolutely ridiculous. Encourage the noobs to squat on land, yeah, go ahead, encourage people to abuse others' property rights. Yell at Puppet for daring to say that something adverse might happen because of it. Fine. If it makes you feel good.

Some abuse reports actually do get acted on. Do enough violating of community standards and you never know what will happen.

Puppet you have serious issues, chill out. No harm is done to anyone, the only person who seems to be hurting is you, be careful your head doesn't soon explode with all that seemingly built up anger.

I do think squatting is kind of skeezy...I mean, there's no weather in SL so it's not like anyone NEEDS a home. Rather than using what isn't yours, unpack your stuff in sandboxes and either find a 'dressing room' to change, or do it high in the sky or underwater. *shrug*

NOT the point...the point is the inherent and unwarranted sense of entitlement.

TOS? you need to get a grip and take a red pill.. maybe I will tell my noob squatters to come visit you on your land so you can AR them..

better set up a security system and Ban lines surrounding your cartoon character before the TOS hits the fan..

and FYI its not your land... you just chose to pay to use it...

Nope. If you, as a land owner, "delete" something you don't own, it's the same as hitting "return".

Use a sandbox, and pack it all back up when done.

Squatting isn't the answer.

It'd be like having no fence on your yard and coming home to find a couple tents set up and a party going on without you being invited.

I'm sure those saying nobody is hurt or loses anything would still pick up the phone...

good manners and behavior isn't limited to RL

Respect also works the same in both.
