is it always your habit to ignore questions while simply pushing forward fresh assertions? i am making a fair effort to address your questions, yet you continually ignore mine. again, this isnt about entitlement. entitlement implies a right, and i have never suggested that people have a 'right' to squat. i have stated though that it is possible to do under certain circumstances, and i have gone on to say that it is quite incidental for the landowner to stop if they dont like it. 'entitlement' and 'respect' are red herrings. their use is being employed for the sole purpose of clouding the discussion. Nope they are the basis of my discourse. It shows a lack of respect to just walk onto someone's land and set up a home or leave trash on it based on a personal assumption that it's okay because the traffic has low numbers. It's rude to not ask a land owner if it's okay to use their land, digital or physical. _____________________

sort of like godwining then?
enough of the red herrings already. using your logic 'take a copy' is theft, it is disrespectful for ppl to use my rl driveway to turn around, and my neighbour is a thief for benefiting from the rl porchlight i spend my money maintaining. its complete absurdity. this is second life, not first life. "It is the internet I do not have to behave like and adult and show common courtesy to folks!" Is that your argument? That since it's all digital you don't need to consider the people who are on the other side of the world sitting at a computer. That basic good manners do not need to be a concern when interacting with the digital worlds, never mind that there are real people on the other end of the digital world affected by your behavior? _____________________

no the issue is that you apply rl rules and norms to second life, even when they dont work. you find it impossible to discuss an aspect of sl without correlating it to its 'rl counterpart'. if i then try to point out that the correlation is not accurate, you erect a strawman of logical extremes. as an example, i have no doubt that if i were to state that i am not opposed to ageplay you would equate that to myself promoting rl child molestation. somehow an sl land owner clicking 'return objects' is the same as spending hours cleaning up cory worthingtons party of 500 teenagers.

So if it was one button click to clean up your real yard, it wouldn't matter in the real world if someone used it without your permission? Real life social norms still apply online, else there would be no society online. good manners apply to both the digital and physical. Else are you saying it's okay for someone to walk up in a digital venue and just out of the blue insult you and grief you? It's rude, and in real life they would be escorted to the police station. But in the digital world you can teleport away, put them on mute... so it is okay then for them to behave so? _____________________

I do think squatting is kind of skeezy...I mean, there's no weather in SL so it's not like anyone NEEDS a home. Rather than using what isn't yours, unpack your stuff in sandboxes and either find a 'dressing room' to change, or do it high in the sky or underwater. *shrug* QFT! And honestly, when I go wandering around sometimes, it's rare I run into many (if any) people in an hour's or so time. One of my favorite places to hang out and change, etc. before I had a home was Blumfield. _____________________

When my own land was a smaller area than it is now, I had a second, bigger home squatting in the sky, way above some abandoned land that was a whole sim, Berbera. I had this place for months and it was undisturbed although gradually the sim filled up with other junk and the owner eventually returned all the stuff. I remember I foolishly invited a newbie there to see the place and he left me a present - a row of missiles - right in the middle of the place. I managed to move the home up higher but I could still hear the tssh-ka tssh-ka noise from the missiles. Hi Conifer, this may be a silly question... but how do you build a home in the sky? how do you get up there? |

but how do you build a home in the sky? how do you get up there? I've always rezzed it on the ground, sat on an edge, and then used the 'Object' tab in the Edit window to set the height I want. You can also do something similar with a platform, rez the house onto it once it's where you want it, then delete (or not) the platform. _____________________

Hi Conifer, this may be a silly question... but how do you build a home in the sky? how do you get up there? There are several ways to get up there to build. 1. Rezz a prim on the ground, sit on it then edit its Z elevation to the hieght you want. Once you are up there you can make the prim larger so you can stand/work on it. 2. Fly up or use a flight assist device to go over 200 meters. There is a free jetpack in the box of useful free stuff at my store in shona if you need one. Once you are up in air you can "wear" a house and then "drop" it to take it out of your inventory and rezz it in world in the air. 3. Once up there you can take a landmark and use it to return to that spot. _____________________

*chuckles* and people wonder why there are so many ugly red ban lines around That is my point. There are tools available and easy to use for those people that don't want to let anyone else use their land. Some people don't mind sharing what they have with others who are less fortunate then themselves, so they don't put up ban lines, don't turn on auto return and the allow anyone to build on their land. I had to turn on auto-return on my land because some joker was rezzing and leaving objects in my store in front of the vendors. So he kind of gave me no choice if I wanted my customers to be able to see and buy from the vendors. This was also necessary to defeat the criminals that put invisible prims in front of vendors to steal peoples money. I have autoreturn set to 5 minutes so people can rezz purchases and or boats to enjoy the surrounding water sims, but I no longer have to clean up abandoned vehicles with it on. _____________________

I had a home about 500 meters or so in the sky and I would tp to landside because I had a very nice garden and waterway. Well one day I just decided to jump off the platform. When I landed it was at the very edge of my parcel. Well at the edge of the parcel, tucked away just under it was this huge home. Other than chekcing my prim count which I wasn't doing, I had no way of knowing I had a squatter.
I contacted the owner to ask him to remove his home. And all I got was the typical "me dont speak any english crap". So what I did was deleted parts of their home and only returned their windows" with an im saying you need to look out your own window to see if you own land and don't squat on others. Well of course the me speaks no english response went away. After that I was so amazed how the avie learned it so very quickly. From that point on until I moved to my openspace sim, I checked my prim count at least twice a day. I love having estate rights btw. |

That's what autoreturn is for. I know about autoreturn. But the problem I had was my roommate had his items there too as well as mine on his. We started out being neighbors. That parcel was not group owned. He built a platform connecting our lots together giving it the appearance in the sky that it was one huge lot. Our current land is grouped owned, so that and other issues are no longer a prob. |

I will echo the sentiments here of a few other people. You are not entitled to a home in SL unless you pay for it. You certainly don't NEED it, it's a small luxury. Or not so small, depending on your tastes. Some people are generous and have apartments for free for limited periods of time.
But the fact that some people are negligent/absent landowners doesn't make you entitled to use their stuff, without going to the extremes of saying that you can't walk or fly across someone's land. There are plenty of places, including mine, that offer basic housing at very affordable rates. The usual problem is that people don't know how to live within their means. If your means is not having any money at all, then be a vagabond. There isn't anything wrong with that and is a more interesting lifestyle than mine, which requires constant vigilance of my land and its surroundings. There are no more excuses for not paying for things you want. You can use paypal or even wire to get money into your account. Paypal at the very least! No need for credit cards on file. Regardless of what you do, learn to live within your means, even if that means no housing at all. _____________________

Way to go OP! Now just look at all this stink you've managed to stir up. All cause you wanna squat.
My opinion for all it's worth is that if I caught a squater on my parcel, I'm more likely to have a little fun with it. I can imagine several hilarious scenarios to set the stage for. I could sit and wait for the little green dot to appear. Fly up and peep on them or pop in even. Or pewf things in front of their very eyes while wearing an invisibility prim.... I could make a whole night of fun out of catching a squatter. I could tp in friends to join in on the torture...oh what fun! I'm going home right now and taking off my auto return~! _____________________

Funny, innit, that most of the people who seem to be advocating for the squatters' rights, or don't think squatting is a big deal, spend most of their time on islands, where this is much less likely to happen due to vigilant estate owners?
Try hanging out on the mainland more often where this stuff actually happens, and see how you feel about it. |

well, i dont have any additional tools or powers to deal with this on the islands either.
its really as simple as enabling autoreturn.
