this math hurts my head..how do you only get 78 prims from going from 15,000 to 20,000? She's on a 1024 parcel. Share of the "new" prims = 78 / 5000 = 0.0156 Therefore share of the land area = 0.0156 * 65536 (65536 total sqm per sim) = 1024-ish ![]() |

Yah. SL on XBOX or any other gaming console is a non-event for me. Never had one, and not likely to ever get one. Especially not if Voice is the main way of communicating!
Seems to me that to run on a console game, most of the content still needs to be "canned" - something local on the console, not piped over the net. I'd expect Sl to eb a real dog if they did try to do it as a networled console game version. when compared to console games that mostly use canned content. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

I actually saw somethin where you will eventually be able to run SL on your cell phone. That would be kinda cool too. Not a full version tho I think.... ![]() /me grabs her cell (because I can never remember the name of the service) Vollee That's it! ![]() It looks surprisingly good, I was surprised. You can do more than SLeek or things like that since you can actually see and move around, but in other ways you can do less... I have a friend with a disability who was overwhelmed when she tried SL, maybe a box version would be easier for her? Hopefully like the CSI promo, it will just boost the non-retention numbers as all those users try it and leave after they find it's not like Grand Theft Auto (well, aside from the, what was it? Hot coffee?) ![]() _____________________

I was just experimenting to find out if it was possible to run GSA searches of Second Life without being on the Second Life client. So I tried the logical URL - http://search.secondlife.com/. http://search.secondlife.com/ gives an apparently blank page, but if you View Source, you see it contains a single HTML comment. Which is.. Whaa! SL on consoles! That could be.. interesting.. ooh! will you be my next riddle contest partner! you really know your way around a secret! ![]() |

Going to consoles will attract more frustrated gamers with headsets. (=_=) I still think seeing SL running on the graphical potential of either machine will be very impressive. Yesterday, I was inworld and one of my friends that was not logged on was sending me messages inworld. They came up through window chat. I responded but it said he was not online. Everytime he send me an im I would look to see if he was online. I meant to ask him when logged on. That's what happens when one replies in email to IMs that are forwarded to email, right? Yes. And when you have your Blackberry setup to receive e-mail, you can do this thing where you're not at home but still have chat session with someone in-world. ![]() As for putting SL on a console, it's an interesting idea but I doubt it will take off. --Hugsy _____________________

*gives her darling Nokia N95 8gb a good hard stare*
If it works on other phones and not you, you do realise you are going to be in disgrace, don't you? You do understand that you will be denied the warmth and safety of your pretty pink sock, destined to clang around in the bottom of my handbag for eternity with keys and cameras and other sharp items? You do appreciate that you will never get to see the light of day in polite company? Your very name will be mud and shall never be spoken again in this house? Oh, and I will be taking that cute pikachu dangler off of you too - for attachement to ....... YOUR REPLACEMENT!!!!! Just giving fair warning ![]() _____________________

I'd expect Sl to eb a real dog if they did try to do it as a networled console game version. when compared to console games that mostly use canned content. With 40-80 gigs of harddisk and a built-in net card, the PS3 should be just as able to stream content from the 'net as a PC. The XBox360 would need the add-on harddisk, though. I'm more worried about the interface, really, if you want to do anything but club-hopping with voice. When I'm in SL, I jockey a lot of windows and shortcuts; something a console is just not geared towards. But that wouldn't prevent the socializers from sitting in their couch while the content creators worked on the PC. That said, I think the comments on that search page is an internal joke. The wording doesn't sound right, why would those three platforms share one placeholder page separate from the PC page, and finally, the effort to develop and maintain those platforms would be massive; too massive both for the current state and for keeping under wraps. |

Yep, me too. All this makes me think is that they need to get their stuff together for the net version before they branch out to more platforms. I agree. I want SL to work on my PC, at home. I'm not interested in it being on a cellphone, iPod, Blackberry or any other device. Am I being Self Righteous and Vain? _____________________

I couldn't find the video of sl to rl immersion but i did find this one which i thought was really neat although the sl to rl version was better than the broken graphics of a hologram in this video..it does show strong possibility's of how much things will change..

God, I hope not...
It will be 6/6/6 all over again. Besides, what kind of market share are they expecting to get from console access anyway? Can you imagine trying to type with a game controller? Voice isn't a big to-do anymore. Less than 10% of the people I see use voice. |

Ugh. I sincerely hope that this is *not* the big announcement. SL does not seem well adapted to consoles at all, to be frank. And why on earth would I want to run SL on my cellphone of all things? It's fussy enough on a high-end PC! And what about all the kids that consoles attract? Do we really want every kid with a console running around in SL?

Fascinating find, Yumi.
Incidentally, I think it's absolutely ironic that you discovered this little gem. If there was ever an opportunity to 'beat the crowds' to a market, this would be it. Third party building tools or controllers for consoles, inworld HUDS compensating for various PC functions, web access via inworld prim... inworld environments that would still 'make sense' and run quick on low end phone graphics... the whole thing is just rife with insider or 'early in the know' opportunity. I personally take such thin client access *very* seriously. Imagine an "SL-IM" service that can range from text to voice to enhanced presence to... virtually 'being there.' That's the future. _____________________

Can you imagine trying to type with a game controller? Ick. One of these would work, though: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360messengerkit/ Voice isn't a big to-do anymore. Less than 10% of the people I see use voice. That assumes new residents will want to SL the way old residents do... _____________________

That's assumes new residents will want to SL the way old residents do... Me: Yeah, we can hear you. (^_^) NiHov: [Is there anyone here that can tell me they hear me?] Me: Totally, I hear you loud and clear... Good mic settings BTW. (^_^)y NiHov: [There are so many people here. Hello? Why isn't anyone responding? Hello?] Me: LAWL^-^ (Gesture with particle poof) NiHov: [Hey, I heard something. Who said that? You sounded like a little girl. What's the age limit here?] Me: Silly, you're not reading a thing are you? (o.o) NiHov: [Hello?] Me: Meh... Eventually you'll actually look at your screen... Ain't there someone on voice around here to set her straight? I don't wanna do it. (>_< ![]() ........ (=_=)y _____________________

I don't think it's really about attempting to implement the entire set of features and capabilities on these platforms, but subsets of those features that make sense on the given device. "Thin clients" as Desmond mentioned. On the cellphone, the obvious application might be messaging. On the consoles, the experience can potentially be as rich as on the PC, with a few interface limitations to work around - but at the same time be advantageous for certain activities in SL - combat RP comes to mind, and more generally vehicles of all sorts.
No, I don't envision an influx of griefer kids running around SL using their consoles, as I doubt they would offer any more incentive or advantage in that regard than the PC based client does today. _____________________
