/me tosses her OED out the window.

WHEEEEE!!! I have the WIKIPEDIA!!!
I *was* pointing out the reference to the COD, since you seemed to be worrying about being an authentic Canadian.

Pep (I presume the COD is a very slim volume, with a long "E" section?)

Breaking news!

The New Oxford American Dictionary's 2009 Word of the Year is:

unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.

As in, “I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.”

“It has both currency and potential longevity,” notes Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford’s US dictionary program. “In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year. Most “un-” prefixed words are adjectives (unacceptable, unpleasant), and there are certainly some familiar “un-” verbs (uncap, unpack), but “unfriend” is different from the norm. It assumes a verb sense of “friend” that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!). Unfriend has real lex-appeal.”

Poor neologising! It should be defriend.

Pep (That's what happens when you let amateurs loose on the language.)

I followed a tip from the Forum Cartel chat an caught Zachh Cale in concert, Wow he was good! What a crowd, too!

oh yes, Zachh Cale is a great pianist! anytime you can catch one of his performances, you definitely should. his rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" just melts me.

and you didn't mention that Blue Linden was there. That was a fun surprise! The man has good taste in music, clearly :D .oO(i can just make him out in that picture. Eli spotted him holding a little teeny martini glass, which he grasped precariously between two giant dragon fingernails. oh! and he has the cutest little white fluffy kitty resting on his back. totally great sense of humor, that Blue)

Delurking to push the count a little more toward the 10,000 goal - so important to those base ten human folk. It's my civic duty.

The well known answer to life, the universe and everything is of course 42.
The slightly less well known question to the answer to life, the universe and everything is "what do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?"

6 X 9 = 42

The answer to the question is correct ... in base 12.

Just my bit of trivia for the day.

The next question is, did Douglas Adams do this intentionally or was it a coincidence?

How can someone get something so simple so wrong?

Pep (Perhaps the distraction of wishing cancer on others is too much for you.)

PS I've been explaining it correctly since the days when Douglas lived next door to me in college. :D

PPS And if you have me on ignore you won't even realise why people are sniggering at your stupid error. :p

Aww I miss our old land... which someone bought 2 days ago.
Should I mention that they re-named the parcel? It's no longer called Threeli City. It's now named Morning Wood Park and it has a giant golden penis statue. Gee I'm going to miss that neighborhood... :p

42's a great number! :D

I'm embarrassed to say that I never read the book...so I had to go look up the reference. fyi - according to the all knowing wikipedia, :p I think it was base 13.

Of course it's base13 not base12.

Pep (Which makes Rhonda look extremely stupid; once again she has posted without her brain being involved.)

I agree unfriend makes for a poor neologism. One would never say "unlouse" so why "unfriend". My preference would be for defriend as well.

Of course it is. Your brain must be poisoned by all that bile in it.
