From: Maureen Boccaccio Gabriele aside (for I know why she's hot), I wonder why vampires are such a hot commodity right now...books...movies...tv. Me - I'm a huge fan. Books, movies and tv series. I'm just wondering about the fascination. because it's given the industry a way to capitalize on, and promote, yet more emo teen angst. unfortunately, they all keep telling (which i'd typoed as Selling) the same story over and over again.

From: Lindal Kidd Some possibilities:
What I object to in the recent glut of vampires in popular literature is that they're so watered down. The "Twilight" series is a glaring example. The vampire protagonist is nothing more than a romantic, attractive hunk. Vampires are evil undead, in addition to their charm, and should (IMO) be portrayed as such. Their existence is wound about with limitations; it's not all high fashion and dancing at exotic nightclubs. Vampires are easily destroyed, by sunlight or by staking. They are vulnerable during the day, and must always fear their coffins/beds being found. In some legends, they are limited in their ability to travel, especially over water. And of course, they are all serial murderers, sustaining their existence by terrorizing and killing others.
Check out HBO's new series True Blood then, I think you'll love it. I know I do! It just finished its second season. Seriously, check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiW8ZpH57IAThats a good promo, tho it focuses more on the love aspect, but trust me, vampires are evil, vicious and blood thirsty in this series. Its like crack for your brain! Handy

From: Eli Schlegal I loved that show. It's OK Tex... we are all friends here. You can admit "that kid in the neighborhood" was you. hehe. Naw, not me! I had a red white and blue cape. I was Evel Knievel.

From: Lindal Kidd Some possibilities: - that powerful, hypnotic attraction they have. Very sexy, especially for anyone who even fantasizes about D/s. ("I just couldn't help myself..." - they're sharp dressers, too. - and suavely charming, even if they aren't mesmerizing you. - they are (in a limited sense) immortal. In an aging society, the promise of eternal youth is powerfully attractive. And of course, they are all serial murderers, sustaining their existence by terrorizing and killing others. I like Barbara Hambly's portrayal of them in "Those Who Hunt The Night" and "Traveling With the Dead". Her vampire Don Ysidro is both a believable vampire and a sympathetic character. Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series has some good evil vampire characters in there. One or three, can't recall now, has heavy vampire action. At least two. There is one where a vampire is rampaging around, one where the vampire queen is after the main character, and I think a third one involving . . something.. Main character is a coyote, though.

People have always been enamored with vampires and vampire legend. I guess it's primal or something. There's literature out there on the subject. Anyway, vampire stories in entertainment is pretty well a constant which waxes and wanes (so, er, a constant variable - damn it shut up), but never seems to go fully away.

For an mildly entertaining vampire parody, there's always "Dracula: Dead and Loving It." I noticed that no one has mentioned Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. Unless I missed a post somewhere along the way.

Actually pep we HAVE had that many individuals viewing this thread (give or take a few from folks who view at home and at work). your views count only as 1 view, no matter how many times you view it... mine... 1 as well, even though I might view it 1000 times or more.... so even though technically you are correct (allowing for the people who view from multiple locations) it is still a number of unique (ie individual) views.... not the total views of everyone's multiple viewings as for the other comment... back at you... I am sick, still sick, not functioning at the top of my game (which sadly is below par on my best days) so there! [/QUOTE]

Unless I missed a post somewhere along the way. Great books, at least the first 3, I recommend you stop after that myself. But didn't translate into a very good movie. Shame too. And kind of odd, everything you wanted to see from the book was in the movie, and yet somehow the movie lost everything that made the book so good. Kind of like the DaVinci Code. Handy.

I was flipping through the stations the other day and came across a new series on one of those networks, the one that was made from UPN and WB. First episode, beginning scenes, man & woman driving down road, someone in road, they hit. Stop. Man gets out to look. Is killed. Woman . . . flees. Don't know if killed or not. Point was that you don't even see the vampire in those scenes (at least the part I saw). It is kinda like jaws, where someone is hunted and killed and you don't see the shark at first.

True. It lost quite a bit in the movie. A lot of people blame it on Tom Cruise. I don't know if that is entirely accurate. All I know is the movie did not work. Books were far better.

I heard that the CW (Formerly UPN/WB) is making a new vampire series. I know because I saw a headline where some of the actors and photographer were arrested for indecent exposure a couple weeks ago.

I do not pay attention to entertainment news, and prefer not knowing if my 'favorite' actor likes to eat cheetos while beating a small plastic doll in the shape of satan and whistling when the saints come home. I know. I'm odd. Had chance to see, live, OJ being driven very very slowly down road in Bronco, and I purposely turned channel. Did not watch that, nor trial.

It was just one of those headlines that appeared on a news page somewhere. Just a coincidence that I happened to run across it.

From: Rhonda Huntress It kind of works that way for replying to him as well. /me shrugs. oh so now we can not even reply to him? AS IF!! I will reply to whomever I want to reply to, if people do not like it they do not have to read my posts. I choose to not quote him because I respect the fact some have him on ignore, but I will reply to him if I wish. Heck after that comment I just might quote when I reply... (that totally annoys me, it is like saying, you can only talk to who I say you can talk to) what the hell is this place coming to?

From: Tex Nasworthy Thanks Maureen, great cake. After having as many as I have, I tend not to get too excited about birthdays. However, "Festival of Tex" does have a nice ring to it. happy belated (I think you mentioned it has gone past) if not, then happy b/d and not belated are you a virgo too? (I am bad at remembering when it switches to the next sign) (mine was on the 14th)

But don't be surprised if we fail to take you seriously. good lord, I would be more surprised if people DID take me seriously most of the time I do not take myself seriously life is too short to dwell on the negative, and to worry about what others think smile, even when feeling down... (ETA) Actually, everyone, right now, as you read this... smile. just smile, for no reason.... turn that frown upside down and smile.... see how good it feels, now... think happy thoughts and keep that smile going, and next thing you know, others are smiling with you! (besides when you sit there, at the desk all alone, and smile for no reason, you feel a little silly, which then turns it into a real smile, and heck, maybe even bring forth a little chuckle, or giggle)
