Well, here's my thinking, perhaps a real anthropologist might step in to correct it:

Much of human thought is based on the ability to pattern-match. Pattern-matching is a clear benefit for an animal that can't run very fast and is poorly equipped to defend itself against predators ... "Hmmm a wolverine looks like a bear and thus is probably something to avoid". "This plant looks like that poisonous plant and thus maybe we'll let somebody in the tribe who's basically useless try tasting it before anyone else does.".

Stereotyping is just a form of such pattern-matching. "The last 20 news stories I've seen about terrorism have involved Muslims, thus Muslims should be avoided.". Same thought process. Now, as civilized beings, we can look at that statement critically and notice that all terrorist activities are carried out by aggressive fundamentalist sects, and add those qualifiers to the sentence, and therefore sort Muslims into normal ones and dangerous ones. But it shouldn't be SURPRISING when people go with the broadest stereotype ... probably it was the safest way for primitive humans to behave.
.
What a very politically correct way to say "All men are pigs."

!! unless you're asserting that women don't think, the quote boils down to "All humans are pigs", not "All men are pigs", n'est-ce pas?

Raymond said something to Nika.
Raymond got called out by Nika
Nika is a wolverine.

Pattern matching!

BTW, I'm the guy in the tribe who tries the poisonous looking plants. It usually works out, but I hate it when we go mushroom hunting. My liver hurts.

Talking about the other thread, as a woman, I'll often seek out the male clerks in any store. That's how I get free add ons and/or rebates, without having to ask. If I go to a fast food place, I'll stand behind the line with the male cashier (more fries), etc.

Is that what was meant about taking advantage of your gender? :o

Nika- love your thought process - eloquent, insightful and well constructed. Would you like to come to the philosophy meeting? You might enjoy this little experiment.

Morgaine - I picked up a cool flying book this morning at Grendels :)

It all has to do with being subtle.... man or woman. Too much of anything is a put off.

Slightly piggish - yes.
Disgusting pig - no.

Orly? Which of us has the job where he travels to exotic locations for shoots, participates in casting calls choosing between some of the loveliest humans on earth, and makes up movie tag lines for a living?

Anyone know where I left my cel phone? Haven't been able to find it since last night. The ringer is set to 'silent'.
