We got to Sanibel too! Gotta love the shell collecting! And of course, the Blue Giraffe restaurant.

On the gulf in Charlotte Harbor, there is a beautiful island you can only get to by boat.. called Cayo Costa.. OMG rustic camping.. private, not that many people stay over night..
Beautiful, beautiful crystal clear water... "sigh" pristine white sands..

I love that place.

I miss the ocean. *sigh*

There's nothing like squishing sand with your toes, burning your feet as you walk/run to get to the water, the smell and taste of salty sea, emptying the accumulated sand from your bathing suit bottom, almost drowning when a wave pulls you out... I even like seagulls.

I miss it too. I live in Los Angeles now.

Too cold and polluted to drown in.

I live on an island, Yay!

- the Island on Montreal...

Not much of an ocean view from here. I did live in Vancouver years ago, right next to the beach. I also lived in La Martinique for a very short period, but I was quite young.

So... to add to the open ended life thread here...

The thread about gender-roles and avatars reminded me of something I just noted. While doing some research for a philosophy group I attend in SL, I have been exploring non-human avies. I have always been a female something - whether human girl or faeiry or deamon - what have you... but recently I became a bunch of animated particles .. all shiny little glowing thingies - looks neat. Anyway, I went over to OI where the few Residents who were present did speak to me but automatically assumed I was male - even when I told them I was female they did not believe me - even when I changed into a female avi then they accused me of being a guy in a female avi... so - there perception of me was colored by my first manifestation - AND they took it to be male... thoughts on why? How did they come to this conclusion? What would you have thought?

I would have read your profile for an indication of what you were... I do not assume anything.. Odd that a car a boat or motorcycle are refered to as females.. and interesting avatars and whatnot are thought of as male.

Its a monthly thing they go through.. to quote a wise man named stephen lynch

"She'll retain her water, her breasts will be tender

And every third word that you say will offend her

Get out of the house and go down to the old pub instead"

lol no seriously sometimes it comes down to a lack of detail. where men who make women avis usualy express certain parts of a womans body where women would not normally. it could be anything.. the way you talk.. your name in world.. how you present yourself.. ect.. but thats my opinion.

Scripters are considered male by the general populace as well, which is annoying. Societal stereotypes carrying over into SL should, I guess, be no surprise.

Paticularly when the tendency to stereotype is, basically, a survival characteristic for humans.

Probably assume woman have no imagination, or no sense of fun? I sometimes get that while wearing some avs. Women will speak to me in a different manner if I am a dragon, etc. Kind of caught me off guard, I just always thought of my name as a woman's name. Maybe the 'beau' part confuses some...

No one's accused me of being dishonest, though. Not to my face anyway. Besides, nothing wrong with being a man. If some think I'm not a girl, that's ok. It doesn't really bug me.

@Raymond - Name - true enough...poor things- you should have heard them trying to pronounce Amaranthim!
@Tarina - That has always struck me as odd as well, about the motorcycles and cars, boats, etc..
@Rioko - The alt I created for this express purpose has a very non-gender specific name- nonetheless, I think of "it" as him - which gives me the willies 'cause I cannot imagine wanting to RP another gender - so definitely, that one lost human shape almost immediately that got in-world.

Will you share some ideas of when stereotyping could be a benefit for the species as a whole? In other words, why would humans have developed that sort of defense mechanism, accepting for now that it is so.

Drinking a different white tea now. This one's a little less grassy but it's getting a bit nutty as it oxidizes. Still, yum!

Probably the most creative one I have seen.

Well, here's my thinking, perhaps a real anthropologist might step in to correct it:

Much of human thought is based on the ability to pattern-match. Pattern-matching is a clear benefit for an animal that can't run very fast and is poorly equipped to defend itself against predators ... "Hmmm a wolverine looks like a bear and thus is probably something to avoid". "This plant looks like that poisonous plant and thus maybe we'll let somebody in the tribe who's basically useless try tasting it before anyone else does.".

Stereotyping is just a form of such pattern-matching. "The last 20 news stories I've seen about terrorism have involved Muslims, thus Muslims should be avoided.". Same thought process. Now, as civilized beings, we can look at that statement critically and notice that all terrorist activities are carried out by aggressive fundamentalist sects, and add those qualifiers to the sentence, and therefore sort Muslims into normal ones and dangerous ones. But it shouldn't be SURPRISING when people go with the broadest stereotype ... probably it was the safest way for primitive humans to behave.
