I have just downloaded from OpenLife Grid thier viewer RealXtend and run SL on it for a few minutes. My first impression is the grey look of it gives me clearer menus, and it is designed to opperate/switch between OpenLife and SL.
I will try it more fully later.

Well just tried RealXtend on a different PC and it was awefull as regards the words on the silver/grey background. This PC has one of those new glossy black screens by HP, like a laptop has. Could only just make out the words.
This PC is OK on the SL viewers in 99% words ok to read, It goes off a bit though on the Group messages in top right corner, the blue background with black print, this print is off a bit.

OK, so I hear a lot of bitching about the new viewer (as usual). I take it it's a borked viewer? Does ANY body like it?

I'd also like to ask a simple questions: Why is the Nicholaz Viewer SO much better than a [working] LL viewer? Can you guys give me some of the stronger reasons why you think the Nicholaz viewer is superior, than say, the last viewer before the borked one? Is it the communication window? Better performance? Less lag? Less crashing? Please explain, in a NOT-fanboy way why it's superior. Thanks.

Is any one ever happy with a viewer? Me thinks not. I think I'm the only one that likes LL. I"m confused how so many people here play SL when they hate so much about it all the time. *shrugs*

His viewer is a bit behind at the moment.. BUT.. Many of the offical patches came from Nicholaz.. His viewer has ALWAYS been more stable than the official ones. His viewer has fixed the problem of having everything stuck to your rear after a TP.. That one fix alone made it a better viewer..

He has reverted the awful commuications window back to the way it was, his viewer still has the network status bars in the upper right corner..

Back in 1.17 days the Nicholaz viewer had a bunch of memory leaks fixed long before the official viewer did, that is how I found out about it.. I was crashing after about an hour in world.. I got the Nicholaz viewer and that stopped.. I have been a fan ever since.

All I can do now is to pray that he finds time to work his magic on the 1.19 viewer.

RE the friends list: It shows fine on the Mac client. What OS are you on?...

Not on this Mac :( I'm running 10.4.11 and my friends have all been 'waiting' since I installed the new version. Also, whoever thought those little tick boxes were an improvement must like over-designed information panels much more than I do!

Unfortunately, I was one of those who copped the 'mandatory' notice, so I didn't bother to keep the older version, but it looks like I'll need to upgrade to Leopard soon if I want to use the windlight viewer anyway. What OS do you run, Ceera?

I don't think it's mandatory--I haven't had to download any of the recent viewers...I still log in with the older one.

According to the blog starting March 12th the new viewer will be manditory. Thats the only reason I caved in and started using it. I hate it but thats just my 5 cents worth of nothing I suppose. :(

Which smart dev put this on windlight?
03-08-2008 00:28
It's on my windlight as a required download before I can get in the game. What idiot put a regular viewer download on windlight as a requirement that won't let you in the game because windlight never updates???

Come on guys. No beer in the programing room.

the viewer is only mandatory if you allow it to be.
my shortcut bypasses the mandatory windlight update:
G:\SecondLifeWindLight\SecondLifeWindLight.exe -settings settings_windlight.xml -channel "nina's client" -set SystemLanguage en-us -multiple

Thank you very much. It worked. But the question remains. Why is a normal viewer update in the Windlight viewer forceing an update that never actually updates the viewer and so keeps forceing the update?

The Release Candidate incorporates Windlight. It's not the "normal" viewer at all. I am using it right now, and I have all the Windlight advanced sky/water options.

Maybe they have just decided to stop spliting resources for 2 development teams working on 2 viewers, and possibly Windlight has near reached full integration anyway.
This can be a good thing, it also means the regular graphics viewers are nearing their useby date. Perhaps when windlight becomes standard, minimum graphics settings should be the default.
