Masterful f**k-up on Linden Lab's part misinforming users that the viewer was mandatory. I haven't had many problems with it and the complaints about the preferences menu is somewhat trivial and I think ctrl alt p still works. The friend's list is a bit more serious although I think many of us have had intermittent waiting to update and hippo problems with it before and it looks like people are posting workarounds already. I also don't understand the point of making the say/shout buttons into a dropdown menu. As a previous poster said, we didn't seem to get anything in exchange for it. As for making voice on by default, I can see how it might be minorly annoying to some but all you have to do is turn it off upon login. Maybe it's a move on Linden Lab's part to encourage people into using voice but more likely it is to give new users all bells and whistles activated upon initial login.

Sigh. Business As Usual...

1.19.0(4) has now been replaced by 1.19.0(5). Why? Because a security issue was discovered.

Not only that, but the message telling you that you HAD to upgrade was, itself, an error. 1.18.5(3) will still work...and doesn't have the security issue that 1.19.0(4) had.

Plus they fixed another bug, which re-set your Voice preferences when you first used the new viewer.

This is explained in a blog post by Joshua Linden...which has comments blocked.

Come on, LL...I can understand bugs getting by that don't appear until the thing is out there in the real world, on the real grid, under field conditions. But these sorts of things could be, and should be, discovered in basic QA testing.

I won't even start on the other annoying bugs that cropped up (or re-cropped up) in the 1.19 xx release candidates, and managed to stay un-fixed as the RC became the Main viewer. That's, sadly, par for the course.

Why haven't you hired Nicholaz Beresford yet? It's the single best thing you could do to improve SL's stability.

He'd never do it. He'd lose too much autonomy and things still wouldn't get done. Although more might, it wouldn't solve the problem of version control, etc.

I missed a bunch of IMs last night because of the lack of flashing and the nearly imperceptible (on my screen) differences between fresh and stale IM tabs.

There are 101 votes on the JIRA to fix this, and it's still "unassigned," and yet it only took TWO VOTES for the flashing to be taken away.

At least it didn't delete boot.ini. I know a game that did that. Total catastrophe. But funny for those on mac clients :)

Indeed, this is the reason other custom content creators of other game clients communities I have been a part of don't either. Some certainly do, but they get absorbed into the fold and blend in with the 'system'. As Cristalle says above, you loose all your autonomy. You work in THEIR procedures on THEIR schedule.

Theres one peep I know well, Adam who is a excellent CC creator for the game Neverwinter Nights2. He has been approached from what I recall by both dev houses Bioware and Obsidian. He turned down both.

Some have from the NWN community and, to be cliche, 'they were never seen again'. :P In all seriousness the 'impact' some in the community thought they would have on the process was quickly killed. Especially when they were moved off the NWN team into a 'to be named project in development team'.

Bottom line, its best to have them keep this as a hobby on their own rules and processes.

Thanks! Does it work without having to jack with the source code to fool LL's retarded version check?
It works fine without having to do anything special. I uninstalled Quick Time, downloaded and installed the Alternative, and SL seems to start up and run just fine.

Until of course they enforce version access on the server side and thus users are then forced to use a specific (newest) ver to connect.

There are comments on the page linked to above about QT Alternative that say that it doesn't work with Windows 2000. The description given on that page says it does. Which is correct?

From what W2K users said previous in this thread, the new client requires the latest quicktime (due to security patches). However apple has stopped making versions of QT for W2K a few version ago. Catch 22 it seems.

Some other programmer or team of them might need to step up to bat if Nicholaz isn't going to continue with updates.

Henri Beauchamp allready has. He has updated the pre-voice GUI patch for the latest clients, along with many of Nicholaz's patches (and others). Linux only at his site http://sldev.free.fr/

Boy Lane has a windows version of Henri's cool viewer available here http://my.opera.com/boylane/blog

When you go to the actual QT Alternative web page, on the right hand side, it says:

OS Support: Windows 2000/2003/Vista XP

That is why I made the comment that it should work with Win 2K

Since I don't run Win 2K, I cannot say for sure, but figured that person could give it a try and see for themself.

Nicholaz mentions that one on his blog, so I took a look at it, but it seems to indicate that it includes Restrained Life. I have no interest in that.

The Restrained Life stuff is disabled by default. So it really should have no impact on the viewer if you choose not to enable it.

Anyway give it a try.. (well after it gets updated to the version with the security fix) it is really much better than the normal SL client IMNSHO.

I like it.

As for buttons being here or there, it doesn't affect me in the least. Voice? I don't use it but, I suppose those that do, had to enable it the 1st time they logged on and wanted to. Now, those who do not wish to use it must disable it the first time they log on using this viewer. These things seem minor to me.

I notice the BUG where voice is "on" by default is still present.

That's because it stays on till you turn it off :P :)

Hmm, so this is actually Apples fault for not supporting old Microsoft OS?
