Expansion of SL: Vertical or Horizontal!!!

What is your opinion about vertical and horizontal expansion of SL land?

1) Pros and Cons of vertical expansion of SL land.....

2) Pros and Cons of horizontal expansion (for example skybox) of SL land?

3) Currently SL land is provided by Linden Lab alone. In future is there any possibility that private servers can also host SL lands? Does Linden Lab have any long term view in this regard? What is your opinion?

.........The issue of prim management has been raised by Ann Otoole. In refer to that I have the following queries:

4) What is current status of the vertical parceling for prim management?
5) What more could be added/removed in vertical parceling for prim management? suggestions??

6) Currently is the horizontal parceling for prim management possible? If Yes then limitations...
7) what more could be done in horizontal parceling?

...........Sling Trebuchet has mentioned the issue of 'Space Race in SL'...... Are we really in a ‘space race in SL’ or the question of race does not arise as Linden solely decides the direction that we will be heading? ...........

..........hope you would enjoy reading it.....

The more I read the different threads you have started, the more I wonder as to the real reason behind all these questions

why would it matter what direction the grid goes?
it doesn't impact a thing but the world map really..

Imagine there are 7 skyboxes on top of your land in 7 different elevations. What would be the world map like?

thats what i'm thinking ..they sound like they haven't been in world yet..they would see we have all this already if they logged in and flew around for a bit..

Actually. . .that sort of thing worked out very well for Privateer Space.

What in god's name makes you think there is any correlation between public sandbox areas, the direction of grid expansion and private server farms offering grid space???

Fuck, if I'd known a masters' thesis comes this cheap nowadays, I'd have done one...

Seriously. Aren't people required to be at least able to think?

I reckon stacking sims vertically would be cool especially if it meant you could have underground stuff too, sims should be all 1024m cubed in size in my opinion.

So if you wanted land above 1024m, you buy it seperately. Terrain would vary from 1 to 100m I suspect, and tiltable water would be a must so you could actually have streams flowing downhill at perhaps a 5 degree angle.

I think it would be great if SL was able to do something other than the 2.5D grid world. I'm not seeing much change from the current 2.5D grid coming anytime soon though.

There's a spherical world set up described at http://maxping.org/business/press-releases/tekes-offers-virtual-expo-3d-environment-open-for-everyone-.aspx. I tried it out. It's interesting.

I'd like to see a virtual world with avatars on a world that's a sphere, where you can fly around the world, or take a rocket trip and go into orbit around the world, with cool unrealistic physics to make flying in space a lot more fun and exciting than real space travel is. Multiple worlds, different gravities, interplanetary travel, multiple solar systems, all that sort of thing.

Increasing the significance of the vertical dimension in the current grid system by allowing different media and audio urls at different altitude ranges would be nice.

To answer the question about stacked skyboxes, I think the map shows the top prim only of prims up to some particular level, the value of which I don't recall. So the world map would look like it does now.

Grids made like space stations, rotating to provide psuedo-gravity, with different pseudo-gravities at different distances from the center of rotation might be interesting.

A torus shaped grid might be amusing, or maybe a helix, so it could be infinite, and up in the sky you'd see the rest of the grid coiling away.

Yep, I kind of figured there was some sort of college study going on here.

you can put a surround sim mountain range every 1000 meters up and get like 5 sims in one.
Too bad there isn't vertical parceling for prim management.

For what it's worth There is a sphere and you can drive/fly around it (takes ages).

Gee it's been a good while since I've been in There. I had no idea it was a sphere. I don't recall ever seeing anything to indicate it was a sphere. I never had a vehicle in There. You have to pay to drive a vehicle there in There, is that right?
