Think about what you are saying.

Suppose John Smith has a load of responsibilities that stress him out all day, and to his delight he has discovered SL, where he can run around pretending he's a little kid - no mortgage, no responsibility, no worries about being downsized, just playing with yo-yos, catching frogs, riding a bike.

Now suppose Pete Predator is a demented pedophile, who also plays SL. He sees John Smith walking around a SL park playing paddleball and has some nasty, depraved fantasies.

You are suggesting that John Smith should have his expression curtailed, and his emotional outlet taken away from him, because Pete Predator might see him and have bad thoughts.

Because, you know, that's all Pete Predator can do - he can't really harm John - anything he might try John can just TP away from and/or AR him for.

Who are you trying to protect, by proposing to take away John's freedom to be a kid in SL? If John's not there then Pete will just have to fantasize about RL children instead. Would that be better?

Actually this is the fundamental point, and why many non-child avatars are rallying behind the cause. You are arguing overruling current laws and restricting what people can fictionally show and talk about "in just this one case", because "you really, really don't like just this one, but others are fine. Really".

What you, OP, are asking for is restrictions based on "thoughtcrimes" -- and worse yet, restricting those who might inadvertantly cause *others* to have such thoughts, not those having them.

This is a great example. Why make John Smith the bad guy in all of this when Pete Predator is the one who ought to be banned?

You know who I think we should get ride of? Robots. They're weird. They have all sorts of wires and blinky lights, and in RL, they are actually people pretending to be robots. Plus, if some perv jumps on a robot, they might get electrocuted right through their "you-know-what". It's unsafe and immoral. I say down with robots!

Even more important, Pete Predator IS banned - at least, doing the things he's fantasizing about is. The potentially harmful activities - the creation of virtual child pornography by, for example, putting a kid avatar on a sexual poseball - are forbidden and are ARable, bannable offenses when they are discovered. Banning kid avs entirely can't really achieve anything that the existing ban doesn't already achieve.

Kidding, of course, but it made me laugh, so I went with it. You're right, of course, but it seems like the animosity that the OP and others have is grossly misplaced. My point was that they should be outraged by the Pete/Chesters of the world, not the kids who are hopping around minding their own business. But somehow, they direct their anger at the kids. It's like blaming the victim of a rape because she wore a short skirt or was alone after dark.

If people rp'ing kids make someone nervous, then it's easily avoided. Kid avs are pretty rare, so it's not tough to just ignore them if it's so difficult to be around. I think it's sort of fun, but I like kids in RL, and I can suspend my disbelief for a little while in the name of fun. But just not liking something like kid avs and linking them to pedophilia is an inexcusable failure of logic.
