From: Rhaorth Antonelli those who say they are done and mean it, don't bother advertising it in the forums I have to say Rhaorth I find this a bit rich coming from someone who has said almost exactly the same thing on more than one occasion. Either cut others some slack or practice what you preach is my opinion. To Blu, finding out the cause of your problems with the computer one way or another is going to be your best option. Who is to say it only affects SL? You might not be able to use the computer at all soon, it would be a shame to write it off. Also consider your computer might be compromised by a virus, trojan etc. You definitely would want to get that cleaned out. Don't write off SL so soon until you find out that the SL viewer really is to blame. That is just my advice of course for what it is worth

Hang in there!
10-12-2008 13:42
awwww Blu...if you truly enjoy it, beyond the computer freezing problems.....hang in there, and try to figure it out. I've introduced RL friends to it, and they had a heck of a time with walking around, and freezing, even on good computer set ups....so they didn't get it, and have not been back, and I didn't know how to help them. I didn't have the computer savvy to get them through it. I never have a problem, on an average computer system....but.....I did have to tweak some things in Preference with the help of others. I can't give you advise on computer installation and that kind of functioning.....but the major thing, was that for me to function, I have to set draw distance down to the lowest.....which is not always a bad thing.....for a week, I didn't notice a monstrously ugly castle go up behind my home, and unless I walk to the back of the yard, I will never see it. I've also got quality and performance set down to lowest - I don't think I'm missing out, too much....I do and see a ton of stuff.....but if I leave those any higher, efforts to move and function, keep going down. All that might be too simplified, and not your problem, though. Can you find a patient friend to help you?

I don't know if this will help - but this what I've done.
I have a very old HP Compaq laptop which is totally underpowered for SL - only 512 memory and inbuilt Intel graphics card - running Windows XP. When I upgraded to the latest client (because I had to - I had been happily running Nicholaz Berresford's old school version) - I got a message on upload that my hardware was not up to the job and SL may not run properly, if at all.... so....
I installed, logged in and went to preferences and reduced all the graphics - draw distance set to minimum, throttled down everything I could. I then got the Advanced Menu up (CTL ALT D) and selected Rendering/Types and I unchecked everything I didn't need - no clouds, trees, grass, particles, bump. I also unchecked Animate Textures.
I can now just about make 7-10 fps - and I manage.

From: Malia Writer Don't worry! Here is an easy-peasy way to find out what your specs are and how they work with SL: 1. Go to "Can you RUN it?" at http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest. 2. Select Second Life from the drop down menu. 3. Click the button. 4. Copy and paste the results here. 5. HOPEFULLY, we can help you. [/QUOTE Tried to use Can You Run It, but I can't even run THAT. As it is trying to dl the program to diagnose if I can run SL, it just freezes up in the DL and goes nowhere. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to clear the history, so it just keeps going back to the cached page and starts at the same place it left off. I even tried closing my browser, but unless I can clear the cache I can't even try to use it again. -Blu- (I think it isn't SL I hate, so much as COMPUTERS!!)

Blu, Are you able to even get into the login window? On far left side before you login there should be section called Prefences that you can click and go into the general tab and clear cache I can take a photo for you to show you how. Sometimes photos are helpful when you don't know what you're doing with simple steps. Just let me know here and I can show you. There is also another way to look at your system information but either way the issue may be the age of your system but I have friend with older system then yours who is able to login in who has only Nvidia 4400 graphic card and same memory and when she is visiting her Mother uses even older machine. I had the same ram and Matrox card when I joined yes it's not the best running machine but it is possible.

Blu, can you run any 3D games properly or do they all suffer the same problems as the SL viewer? Can you run dxdiag.exe from the "Run..." option on the start menu? There is a log option somewhere in there - if you post that log here it might help point to issues or at least tell us what you have.

with the new update, it might just be using more memory now than before. maybe you need to add memory.
have you tried the Kristen or Nichoas viewers?

From: Blu Cazalet Ok...suddenly, SL does not work for me. It does a constant freezing up, every 3-4 seconds and in fact, freezes up everything, including my mouse. It makes participating in Sl impossible. Don't ask me about my computer or monitor or anything...I have NO clue as I am not a computer wizard by any means. I just know...one day it works, the next, and from then on out...it doesn't...at all. EVER. I am ready to call it completely quits. In fact, I just uninstalled it altogether! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH...ok...so...the mandatory question...has anyone else just said, forget it? I am DONE????
-Blu- (OH SO DONE) It's called being in sl. The way it acts with you is usually the norm for this place. You have games like WoW where millions of people play all the time and it's nothing like in sl. Sad but true.

Ok you guys...Rhaorth apologised, I accepted...it's all good, no hard feelings...please let's move on...there is nothing to see here! Now...ahem...my computer and other 3D games...I have no idea because I only use SL on it...no other games. But, I think I will have my ex put the old monitor on it because when he gave me this nice, new, huge monitor, and installed it...that's when everything went south with SL. I will try it again when I get back to from the store, since I just reinstalled it....then, if that doesn't work...I will try to get the old monitor back....and I will let ya know what happens. -Blu- (feeling ever so loved )

The one percent is it case it forced you to change resolution. It is more likely to be an automatic upgrade or that you upgraded to a new viewer or that you installed something that you have forgotten about because you didn't think it would affect anything. If all that is false you might be infected and you need to get that checked out or it could have bigger consequences.

I have NO idear in these things...Anyway....I will keep experimenting. -Blu- (where is my bunsen burner when I need it???)

Mostly the OS has all it needs to operate any monitors. The "drivers" are mostly a list of supported resolutions, frequencies and colour profiles that are used to "tune" the monitor. Anything beyond that is configured at the graphics card side of things. It is possible he twiddled there - you could find out what if anything your BF did there.

oh oh... windows auto updates might have given you a new vid card driver update.... try to find out what you are using currently and compare it to the specs SL allows.. maybe go back to the old drivers before the update. i've had to do that once.

My laptop was recently compromised and when work reinstalled everything for me they installed a new version of the Nvidia drivers v175.19. well I use my work laptop for my SL use at home too and my FPS went from 12-15 to around 2-4 on a good day. To say it was unusable was an understatement. Took me ages to figure out what the issue was because as far as I was told the config was the same but someone who probably thought they were doing me a favour had upgraded them Installing the previous graphics drivers that I had stored someplace safe fixed the issue for me and I am back to normal. Moral is that it can be the unobvious things that cause the most trouble.

I have no idea why you have developed such an overwhelming hatred for me, but.. as you stated, out of respect for the OP AND everyone else, if you feel the desire to continue on this line... then do it in IM enough said

From: Rhaorth Antonelli except it seems, from the I hate Rha club, and you know who you are For the record, I don't hate you Rha, but I do dislike hypocrisy and you have said you are leaving on more than one occasion (it is hard to prove as you have mass deleted so much though) and you certainly have never been flamed by me for saying you were leaving. I have also never hate-PM'd you either.
