Hmmm...not everyone. I don't have an alt...nor do I want or need one for any reason. You're saying one thing.....but your emotions are clearly being very affected by her behavior with this 'alt'. So, while you may WANT her to have the best SL experience......apparently that is taking away from YOUR best SL experience. You have a dilemma....you need to talk to HER and tell her what you know, and how you feel about it. Personally I stay away from any kind of relationship in SL....but in the 3 years I've been a resident I've witnessed a lot of folks going through similar stuff because they're not communicating honestly with each other from the beginning.

You really have to decide for yourself whether this constitutes cheating. If it does, then you've got to be true to yourself and honest with her. It may mean the end of an SL marriage....but it could very well save a more valuable friendship. If it doesn't.....then you've got to accept that she has other priorities in RL and in SL......certainly you should still talk to her, and hopefully with a bit more honesty, you two can work thru this. But, they key here is be honest with yourself first......what do you really feel> Once you know, then you will know how to appraoch it with her. Confrontation can be scary and uncomfortable...but the alternative can be far worse in the long run.

Wow, this became a really great thread for a while, with some really worthwhile discussion about an important theme, vis-a-vis. the individual vs. the commons. And then it suddenly stopped being a discussion of that theme, and became an exemplification of it.

I think Puss is dead on here. Except that the community DID respond by becoming a mob. The prof in question may or may not be an asshat, but he was certainly deliberately destructive. But, in the end, both sides became that. Communities need better mechanisms for handling apparent "threats" than pitchforks, torches, and rope.

There are some interesting analogues with SL here, although, not being a "game," SL is much more open to differing approaches and perspectives. As someone . . . Argent? . . . noted earlier, however, there are bound to be problems when "gamers" come up against "immersives," or those who blur SL/RL lines.

Do you think that these breakdown along gender lines? My own VERY tentative and unscientific sense is that males are more likely to be "gamers" than females . . .
