From: Tegg Bode I like it when shopkeepers/staff greet you and generally just say they are available to help if needed, sometimes I can be talkative, sometimes not, but at least the offer is there rather than one who just sits in a closed room building or ignoring you. Peopel are getting scarce in SL, I like to meet people not meet vending machines. OMG so true. People rarely talk now. I say hi ... nada ... just walk off. Maybe it's lack of confidence in speaking English, but it is getting less and less easy to make friends ... even for a friendly monkey like me

From: Sally Silvera You know, I've been thinking a lot about this. I'm in the process of setting up a little shop and have been wondering whether to set up a little studio right by the shop or continue to make my stuff in the box in the sky. Having read this thread I'm leaning towards the former. I tend to like if there's people available in a store, and was going to make a little garden seating area anyway. As long as people stay away from the private residence, everyone's welcome. /me corrects Sally to say ... everyone except asshats Which covers it for me ... asshats are not welcome either before or after I release my range of millinary! Should I make an asshat? It will only end up as a griefer tool so maybe not!

I have a split parcel (I own lots on both sides of a protected area) and finally decided to put my workshop on the ground across the street. (well until I packed up the shop and went back to being strictly residential) I liked being able to look up the hill and see if someone had stopped by the shop. Most people I said hello to never replied- I think I only had one short conversation with anyone who dropped by (Hi Nina ^.^) I get a fair number of flyovers and people have a tendency to stop much more often with the heavily forested look that I have now than the more bare look I had at the start. I guess lots practically covered in trees are rare enough to merit curiosity- but most don't respond. Only once have I had to explain common courtesy to someone- didn't say anything, didn't knock- just barged into my house and sat on the sofa while I was standing there working on a project and asked me if he could have some free land. I hopped off my pose stand and shooed him out of the house explaining that it was polite to knock and that I was very busy at the moment. Normally I'd have at least tried to figure out what the devil he was doing- but not when I've got prims dangling off my head in bizarre shapes (I was working on hair) and I'm afraid I'll forget what I was doing. He hung around my pond for half an hour or so and then flew off. o.0

Capella, been meaning to stop by your shop, guess it's too late now huh. Yeah, I think i'd like to be around the shop once it's there, if only to answer questions directly and help people out with adjustments and such. Not expecting to socialise heavily with passers-by mind you, as we get plenty of people wondering across the land without even responding to a simple hello

thanx everyone for the replies. i also hate ban lines, two of my neighbors have them up (on an island where its a no-no) and i mumble and grumble to myself everytime i run into them and get stuck (i'm currently trying out a new toy, and can't make the corners yet-lol)
i think some people mistook my curiosity for complaint with this posting. i'm not complaining about people using my stuff--i just kinda find it....unmannerly, i guess, especially since they don't chat with or acknowledge you. its just something that i didn't do when i started, so i can't understand people being that way.
although, i have to admit, i was mildly shocked with the first one that did this, he did speak. he flew in and asked if i wanted a gun? i replied no thanx. he says, want a tank? once again i said no thanx, then he says want a f***?--talk about not being romanced!!!
i love to meet new people, thats one of the reasons i joined sl. in RL, i'm the gabber, my mouth runs a mile a minute. you know how in every neighborhood, theres a house where all the parents & kids congregate? thats ours.
as for shopping, i don't mind when the shop owner says hi, let me know if i can help you in any way, that sort of stuff, thats fine. but i don't want to have a full out conversation. it takes me long enough to find what i'm looking for going from shop to shop. sometimes i'm so intent trying to focus on the one thing i'm looking for, that i don't even notice that a chat comes up until later if i go through my history.

From: Ashe1 Writer its not just the toys though, i forgot to mention this--they will turn the campfire & hottub on & off, things like that. like kids that have to try everything at least once. and this happens like every two or three days(maybe more, when i'm not there to see them) and its different people everytime. its just strange to me. I call it "Myst syndrome." People are used to being in virtual worlds where you are sposed to poke an prod everyting. Mari

ashe LOL I can relate to that! So many times I see fiancee's IM box flashing whilst I'm looking round the walls in a shop and I think OMG! how long has that been going? I'm for the high jump now I think an optional upgrade like flashing the entire screen on a new IM arrival would be a popular choice! I am impressed when a shop owner says hi. Yes, if they can stand by if I need help impresses me too. I've not been engaged by any in anything more than that but can understand your point. More than that would be a distraction. Visitors to my home on occasion have said a few words but rarely. Like you and Marty, I like meeting .. to me it seems the first purpose of an online world. Let stalk .. er, I mean let's talk!

I enjoy the new guys

I love that it appears that there are more residents just roaming around lately. I also try to engage customers, most do respond with at least a "Hi", just let them know I am around if they have any quetions, then get out of their way. I find that almost always I do get hit up with a question and was glad I introduced myself and was there to answer. Remember tying to get business owners to answer questions that I had when I first started and never heard back - I ended up buying elsewhere.
I love people stopping by my home, at least I know I have built something that at least grabs peoples interest. I was building my nieces home this weekend, working away when I saw little green dots next to me, looked out the window and there was a couple - fully dressed - sitting in the spa having a conversation in open chat. They stayed for about 30 minutes, it was like watching t.v. while working, just kept reading their chat and watching them enjoy the day. Also the other day on my sales sim, saw this chick dancing in the street, went out to watch, never said a word and she sent me a dancing bracelet, put it on and we danced together in the street for about 45 minutes - never even dance in RL - but had a blast and made a new friend.
I think a huge majority of players are there for the social interaction and I am a lot more social in SL than I am in RL and really dig on meeting people from all over the world.
Always figure I would have never met the range and variety of people in my small little RL existence as I do in SL

From: Ashe1 Writer what is it with some people? these guys just fly onto my parcel, they never go in the house, never chat to me, but they do try out all the surfboads, jetskis, boats, floats, etc... they do this for about 10 mins and then just leave. whats up? ashe I see the same thing. I have a couple of cars parked outside my house and often a guy (or a couple) flys or TPs in and though I'm standing outside my house, 95% of the time they will walk right past me without saying anything, as if I was not there and head straight for the cars and try to operate them. When they find out they can't because they are not the owner of the object, they usually disappear again. It's nothing I see as a problem at all, I just smile at how obsessed with the cars 95% of the guys seem to be.

How fast would you have been naked if he had offered you a biplane ride? That guy just needs to adjust his approach. ok, seriously, I figure owning a business in SL is a lot like owning one in RL in terms of customer service. If I owned a retail shop in RL, I would greet everyone who walked through the door. If I walk into a shop in SL and the owner is there and says hello or let's me know to ask them if I have any questions, that makes me feel like they want my business and they will be responsive if I have any problems with their product later on. I don't want them pestering me, but just acknowledging that I'm there and letting me know that they are there for questions is very much appreciated. I have to admit that I'm guilty of wandering around on land that isn't mine. I try not to, but when I was new, I just didn't know better. Now when I do, it's pretty much been by accident, and I just leave.

Thank you for that....gave me a great laugh this morning Even though I enjoy the random visitor just dropping in, I had to get a security orb because visitors seem to only stop by when I was bald and working on hair, or half naked while creating a new outfit. The final straw was the guy who tried to orbit me while I was working. Since a large portion of my island is a park like area with boats and such, I will spend time sitting under a palm tree by a waterfall to sort inventory or some such boring task and do get to meet a lot of newer residents who are just out exploring. One of best time was late at night when a couple of people and I had an impromptu boat race around the island. Reminds me that it's the people that make SL such a fun place. ~Ari

We get a lot of people wandering through our land on a private island. Never had any problem with any of them. Most will talk if they speak English. If we're not using poseballs and so on, why should we mind if someone else does? It's not like they are going to wear them out or leave nasty stains on them.
There was a couple a few weeks back who were having a very nice time on one of Bits and Bobs' balls, Lovescene I think it was. They noticed me standing nearby, just sorting inventory, and hopped off the balls and apologised. I told them I didn't mind, and it then turned out the girl was an exhibitionist and they actually asked me to come and watch, and since I could sort my inventory just as well standing next to them, I was happy to oblige.
We get at least 4-5 visitors a week while I'm there, and in nearly 6 months I've never felt the need to eject anyone, never mind put up banlines or an orb.

From: Zen Zeddmore WOW, what a topic. Where do i begin? I think i have a bot problem. AV's frequently come onto my land. I greet them with hi, hello., how are you? blank stares Hello? anyone there? blank stares Knock knock? blank stares YO anyones there? HELLO? blank stares 5 seconds till eject
5 blank stares 4 blank stares 3 blank stares 2 blank stares 1 blank stares bye >eject boing nomore blank stares lol and i go back to work. wondering why do i bother. Sheesh, 5 seconds and you eject them? For me, I know it takes way longer than that short attempted chat plus 5 seconds for a lot of places to load, or before I even see anybody. I also have tenants or friends drop in and look like they're ignoring me, and walk away, because they simply didn't see me, and/or didn't have the "near" tab open in the communicate window when I said hello.

Wulfric - sorry again. We'll pick a better spot next time. Who knew that about her, huh?
In all seriousness, the time it takes people to show up for me once I tp into a spot is one of the most annoying things about SL. I wish there was some priority in place that made people rez before other stuff. I can see a bunch of green dots on the minimap, but the people are invisible until the entire dang sim has rezzed!! It takes forever, and if you start walking before a place has fully rezzed, you're likely to just crash into someone. It's rude.
As for people watching, I recommend my home - the chairs surrounding the fire pit at the Hanson Infohub. It's not too crowded, and you can watch a nice collection of newbs and weirdos show up. The newbs are usually pretty nice and are fun to help, although they are often just a couple of feet sticking out of a giant box that they are trying to unpack. The weirdos are just fun to watch. Bring a friend. It can make for a very nice evening, just chatting away and witnessing the goofyness that makes SL so much fun.

From: Marianne McCann I call it "Myst syndrome." Yes, Myst syndrome fits about right. And I have no problem with that myself. If you need a place to rez your Buick so you can get on the highway and ride it all night long, feel free to use the front yard. But I dont need a copy of your Buick sitting there when you leave. If you feel the need to explore the grounds, and experience a few things you may not have experienced before, enjoy. Ask questions if you will, share a story if its interesting, your most welcome. But be a dick, make a mess, be rude, disrespectful, or just take it for granted that my hospitality is bestowed by anything but my choice, and I'll be blowin yer ass off the lot with a .12 guage pump. We leave the safeties off to deal with varmints round these here parts. YeeeeeHaw!

I get newbies wandering through my house all the time, trying out every poseball in sight while remaining totally unresponsive to communication. Just for kicks, I'm thinking of setting out a poseball labeled "Free L$!" that's really a teleport to the opposite corner of the sim, 500 meters in the air.
