what is it with some people? these guys just fly onto my parcel, they never go in the house, never chat to me, but they do try out all the surfboads, jetskis, boats, floats, etc... they do this for about 10 mins and then just leave. whats up?

Probably one of the same people that like using my rooftop to rez multiple copies of their skybus vehicle, and then fly off in one leaving the rest for me to clean up.

Just sounds like people exploring, perhaps new people who didn't understand that the land belonged to that stranger sitting in the house. They might have just thought you were another explorer. Or, if they didn't have the mini-map on and didn't cam inside the house, they might not have even noticed you were there.

And obviously they don't understand enough about SL to know about private property and that it's somewhat rude to be playing with someone's stuff without invitation. For that I would just say they were innocent newbies... I certainly did stuff like that in my first week. Especially if they are coming to SL from 3D gaming, they might think that everything they see is just part of the game and therefore free to be played with.

At least from your description, it just sounds like innocent ignorance of our customs rather than overt rudeness. :)

its not just the toys though, i forgot to mention this--they will turn the campfire & hottub on & off, things like that. like kids that have to try everything at least once. and this happens like every two or three days(maybe more, when i'm not there to see them) and its different people everytime. its just strange to me.

I wouldn't think anything of it. It's people out exploring, seeing what things can do here. If you can't see how cool SL is, why would you stay?

That definitely sounds like a new person experimenting. If you get it frequently, and it's different people each time, it sounds like you are near a welcome area or other magnet for new residents.

Are these people wandering onto your land? Or do they teleport directly there? If it's teleport, perhaps there was a public facility there in the past, and there is some landmark to it in a package given to new residents.

If it does actively bother you, you could always put up banlines, but I'd suggest starting with something less unfriendly to your neighbors. Perhaps a nice picket fence or hedges around your perimeter, and you could custom make some signs politely reminding people that they have ventured onto private property.

If you do choose to go the banlines route, it would be polite to the neighbors to talk to them about it and perhaps put them on your access list so they don't have to see the ugly red lines. :)

Go and say "Hi"
09-16-2007 18:01
I have a ski resort with no buildings and little to sell, but I encourage people to come and I give away freebies to encourage them. Somebody arrives, I try and say "Hi", it is amazing how many friends I have made this way and they come back, just because they can stand there and do nothing but admire the view.

Try asking if you can help them then they will know you own the things they are using, you never know you may make some lasting friendships

The funniest thing I ever logged in to find was a new house on my rented estate beach property, with the new inhabitants going at it pixel style :^). After I got their attention I explained the situation with owning land, etc.

But this thread also raises a question for me, and perhaps one that those reading can answer. I no longer have residential land, just commercial for my shop. When I am at my shop and someone comes "shopping," I always stress over whether to engage them in conversation -- anywhere from just a friendly "Hello" or on to "How are you doing today?" Of course if I see they are having a problem with a display I will try to help... but what say the masses, do you find it intrusive when a shop owner engages you, or do you just think of it as friendliness?

friendliness of course! usually people in SL will come back to a shop just by how they were treated. so say hi! :D

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I can't speak for others, but nothing annoys me more than people talking to me while I am shopping. I have no idea why. I just get in the zone when I shop and want to be left alone, lol. I am sure not many are like me though.:)Most people are normal.....:p

I love it when a shop owner talks to me! I love seeing the neat stuff people make and its a treat to talk to the creator. It also augers well for future good customer service.

When I run into people in my shop I always feel as if it would be rude not to say Hi. But then they might not be in the mood for talking so it is a bit delicate. If they don't start a conversation after I greet them I say something like, "Let me know if you have any questions," pause a minute, then move away. More often than not they do seem to want to talk.

I'm usually quite hesitant to speak to visitors at my store since I always feel like I'm intruding on their private time. When I'm there I usually say "Hello" and let them know I'm available if they need assistance. Some want to chat, some don't even acknowledge me. Either response if fine...as long as they're happy I don't care.

More often than not it's late at night and I'm redoing a display or working and apologize to them for being in their way.

I don't get out shopping much...but I love meeting the owner and talking with them about their creations, especially since the stuff I purchase I will never ever be able to make..I'm awed by their imagination and creativity. I'd love to meet the creator of my car :) He/She is brilliant!

I have had people who were extremely upset with me...enough to actually IM me and be quite rude.

The first person had set nearly every type of aircraft known to mankind in the middle of my store: several airplanes, flying saucers, jets....and were furious that I had auto return on. They didn't know why I allowed building if I didn't want people putting their stuff out.

I explained that customers get a little grumpy when they've been run over UFO's. He didn't think it was humorous in the least.

Then someone flew up to my private residence and failed to heed the security warning giving them 15 seconds to leave the castle or be sent home. They were sent home. I was IM'd with threats for daring to want privacy.

Apparently it's considered bad form to not allow people to come to my home whenever they want. All they had to do was ask..I'd gladly set out some drinks and invited them for a snack if they would have let me know they wanted to visit :)

Definitely I like the shop owner to talk to me. As I get 'older' in SL I have more appreciation for other people's work and I am often humbled by what amazing things other people can do. I love it when people come to me and are complimentary about what I have done - makes weekends like this one worth while :) (20 hours non-stop work and then running a 6 hour event which ended up going for 9).

I like it when people use my stuff ... except the very private area I have which doesn't have anything very exciting in it, it's just my little beach home. Still I might leave the door open there cos there's very little that is private which can't be switched to owner only use :)

People don't understand when new that something you've placed might be meaningful to you. I had a phone booth at my old venue and EVERY day the door would be wide open (if you can open it you can close it people!).

No point being unfriendly though. Ban lines make for a lonely SL, but worse still is having someone around you who regards people coming over as sport to be griefed ... naming no names!

I used to own a parcel in Wingo, near The Shelter, and I had tons of newbies flying around exploring the areas. It was sort of fun, actually; I put out a nice garden with a secluded waterfall that people could come and cuddle at. I always got a kick that newbies were seeing something besides casinos and strip joints...in retrospect I'm bummed that I sold that parcel.

I like it when shopkeepers/staff greet you and generally just say they are available to help if needed, sometimes I can be talkative, sometimes not, but at least the offer is there rather than one who just sits in a closed room building or ignoring you. Peopel are getting scarce in SL, I like to meet people not meet vending machines.

You know, I've been thinking a lot about this. I'm in the process of setting up a little shop and have been wondering whether to set up a little studio right by the shop or continue to make my stuff in the box in the sky. Having read this thread I'm leaning towards the former. I tend to like if there's people available in a store, and was going to make a little garden seating area anyway. As long as people stay away from the private residence, everyone's welcome.
