She's from the deep south. And to start the derail ... Even the people in the south make jokes like this, usually about neighboring states. The USA federal "age of consent" is 14. Most southern states have laws putting the age of consent at 16, which is also true with most states as a whole. The only true south state that is the exception is Florida. There, the age of consent is 18. Texas is 17 if anyone is wondering. The whole thing abut age of consent is also not so cut and dry and various age ranges are set for different circumstances. The reason 16 is most common is because it is typically common to allow for consensual activity within a 2 year age range, thus a person of 18 years could have activity with a 16 year old. One north eastern state in particular, Connecticut, allows a defense for someone as young as 13 to engage in consensual sexual activity. Yeah, like this would every fly in the deep south bible belt. So yeah, we even kid each other about the Arkansas 14 year old cousin or the Alabama child going to his grandmother's high school graduation ... but in truth, the southern state laws - along with moral and ethical values - are in line with the rest of the nation as a whole. _____________________
