So.. who travels the mainland? What are your longest runs? As mentioned on the Undead thread, I've been doing some blimping around lately. In fact, I've done quite a bit of travel lately on the mainland, going from Abbotts airfield, over the Lost forest of Kharunvel, across through Rosedale into the vehicle sims, up to the Ahern Welcome Area, across to Nova Albion and all the way to the Bay City airship mooring (did you know there's now an air ship rezzing area there?). From there I was able to double back through Nova Albion via the Straits of Shermerville, Go back over the Ahern Welcome Area to Rizal, through the Luskwood, to the Airship mooring in Gray. Stopping to fuel up there (and because my brother, the co-pilot, needed a pit stop), it was off to Mauve, then Mocha, and across to Purple before turning North through ANWR and into Cecrotopia – crossing into another continent in the process. A piccie or two: Ascending over the lake near Rodeo Buzzing Ahern: (Yes, that blimp is huuuge. The hull is a 20 x 20 x 60 sculpted megaprim!) All told, about 60 sims, counting having to re-cross a lot of the Bay City/Nova Albion/Ahern sim lines. Not a personal best (I would need to cross at least 10 more for that), but close. I'm not a stranger to these kinda runs, having done some driving about in Sansara and the Atoll in my soap box racer as well as doing the Kessell Run across Sansara and the Hetrerocera Atoll. I've sailed by Flying Tako, Greenie, around many Linden waterways, and I also used to ride the SLRR rails back in its days. I'm not even gonna count the jetpack flight across all of Sansara, from Hundertwasser to Bay City - Imaginario in less than five minutes. So who else here takes long drives/flights/boatrides/etc.? Where have you been, and how much land have you crossed? Mari (Doing a more funner thread than the last one)

I made a hot air balloon script about a year ago and did lots of.. er.. 'testing' on the old southern mainland. From my home in about the center of the Korean continent, I travelled almost the entire coastline, though not all at once. Good runs, ones where I didn't run into nasties like SVC-22, were probably 50+ regions and I'd bet I came close to 100 at least once. Sadly, the region crossing bugs were just too painful and I abandoned the project. I had a great time touring but when it goes wrong, it goes really, really wrong.. Also toured all of BL with friends last year in a balloon which was great - too bad BL was all no-script/no-build this year.

Does anyone know if there are any hot air balloons in SL that behave like RL hot air balloons? By that I mean a balloon that is at the mercy of SL wind. Seems to me that could be great fun, but I guess it could also be more of a PITA than it's worth.

An given the Flying Tako has to deal with SL wind, I'm sure its possible.

This brings up and interesting question... does your blimp use physics to propel it? If so do you notice any weird physics artifacts or server lag while flying your blimp? Also did you build it or buy it? If you bought it, do you mind revealing the vendor, or IM me with it?

Also did you build it or buy it? If you bought it, do you mind revealing the vendor, or IM me with it? It is indeed physical, and no, I've not seen any problems with it. It's actually been one of my more stable vehicle experiences. When my brother has co-piloted with me, he's also had a sim monitoring HUD on, and has only ever noticed stability issue in one especially crowded sims (Barcola, I believe) I can only wish to have made a blimb that good. It's from Cubey Terra. http://www.cubeyterra.com/2008/06/aerius-launches-at-noon-saturday.php

One saturday I drove my boat completely around the newest continent. I forget what it is called but it's the one that is the furthest north and east. It took me most of the day although I was back and forth from SL to RL.

Well, the scripting would actually be easy, but if the balloon had no other means of navigation, but just had to "go with the flow", I don't think it would get very far. It might be fun to try, but just watching my weathervane, it seems the wind is always more or less "light and variable"--with an emphasis on "variable." At one time or another, I've probably driven my hacked-up Hobo Junk Wagon over all the roads on Heterocera, most of the rails, and a lot of right-of-way that someday may become rail or road. For the unpaved part, it is sometimes necessary to cheat: even the venerable Wagon can't make it over some of the unbridged chasms.

Very very cool that you were able to make it around the whol econtinent. I don't think that' a possibility on the old mainland. Steering is a bit loose, but otherwise good. For the rails, try her Subway car instead of the Hobo Train. It's a bit looser on the tracks and seems to handle the grades better too.

I have a flying steampunk sub that is 103 prims and it crosses sims much better with much less lag then if I was walking across the sim line...
Your way ahead of me though, think my perosnal best is 28 or so sims... will have to check out that ressing area in bay city

It's from Cubey Terra. http://www.cubeyterra.com/2008/06/aerius-launches-at-noon-saturday.phpSweet I may have to look into using Megas and launching Phoenix 3 and 4, my low prim yachts I have been building. Both 37 meters long. Phoenix 1 was a catamaran I abandoned because I ran out of prim between the two 7 prim hulls and the main deck, in the end I had only enough prim for 2 people and no seats anywhere. Phoenix 2 worked out well, will seat 6 on the sculpted benches and captains chair, but lets face it other than its size its not extravagant. Extra prim would definitely help add some details and perhaps allow for much larger vessels. Sadly though, I doubt I could navigate anything larger than Phoenix 2 out of the narrow navigation channel from my home sim to the Korean Channel. Already at 10 meters wide she just scraps though in places, and we are not talking any high rate of speed... But I digress. The longest trip I have taken was from Vine on the old northern most continent to the airport at Grey. At the time I had VTOL pads on my roof in Vine.

Back when the main continent ended at Calbeck, I flew my Mehve from Abbots to Calbeck and back to Lusk... entirely nap-of-the-land mostly flying below 10 meters along Linden roads. I hit ban lines three or four times but didn't "lose my plane" to one.
A few months later, though, we hit one of the periodic "bad times" for vehicles and when I tried to repeat the same exercise on the Southern continent (which had just been expanded to include the southern half below the great gulf) I wasn't able to manage it even at 1000 meters.
I've also flown the "Kessel Run", the long straight line from the south of the main continent through the ANWR bridge to the north of the Atoll, in 30 minutes, only one incident... at Jessie (figures) I lost physics on a sim crossing and had to hop off and on again.
I've also flown mostly water-level and nap-of-the-land south-to-north over the three lower of the new eastern continents, with occasional shifts to high altitude flying where I couldn't find a path over protected land.
All of this has been great fun, both the flying and the hacking on the control scripts to make this kind of crazy anime-style flying possible.

I've done quite a lot of walking round the Linden routes on Jeogeot. Most of them are unmade bumpy grass. I even did one circular 45-minute walk, starting and finishing at my home, in my birthday suit!

Nearly a year ago, I hopped on my trusty Lapras after a windlight meeting, and went, over water, naturally, back to luskwood.
I only crashed twice, and was forced to rerez one more time.
Edit: the trip started in Ambleside... dummy me forgot to note that.

Maaaan, I see I'm not along in some of th' long trips! From: Argent Stonecutter I've also flown the "Kessel Run", the long straight line from the south of the main continent through the ANWR bridge to the north of the Atoll, in 30 minutes, only one incident... at Jessie (figures) I lost physics on a sim crossing and had to hop off and on again. Ya, I hit Jesse in another blimp run. Bad sim crossing there, no question! I had to do an off-and on a couple times on the Kessel run, and my one incident was around Caletta. You did it in about half the time I did, but I was bein "slow and steady" in a Space Bug.[/QUOTE]

I haven't been out flying in ages, I used to take off from the Hangout in Allana and fly out to Corsica and back. I'm going to check out some of the places mentioned here.

it's been a long time but i used to sail the mainland waterways in a hobo raft, you could literally spend hours and hours just going up and down, trying new pathways. the waterfalls are a pain when you come across those tho. lots of fond memories of doing that, might have to revisit it this weekend.
also driven the highways a bit and obviously done some airshipping. but with the sim crossings they just don't seem to last as long as the raft.
any chance i could get a link to the map for the kessel run?

Your copter should rez just fine on the ground in front of the airship mooring. Likely plenty of space for take off there. Likewise Abbotts and Gray both have landing strips. I wish there were more out there, but it woudl take an awful lot of land to do it right. Figures, another one from Cubey. If it is anyting like the blimp or a couple of the other things of his I've flown in, then it is L$400 very well spent. My brother is savin' f'r the ornithopter of his.

In early September I traveled from Nova Albion/Miramare all the way to snow country of Samsara and then up towards Zazi in the northeastern most corner, across the north and back to Miramare.
I swam a lot of the distance. I made a dry suit for cold water swimming. I also have no-rezz, no-script skis which are great on snow. It was amazing how little I saw. Ban lines were a constant nuiscence any time I came off of the roads. I even got shot at.
I have the texture for an anti-banline dress. I want to travel snow country to Islandia and I also want to cross Gaeta.
The new continent which is northeast of Gaeta is shaped like an ear. I called it Paulson but who knows if the name will stick. I even posted a map image of it to the forums.
