I've learned that even though I was the department technophobe who could just about manage to turn her computer on and off to read email and process words, even I, when properly motivated, can learn enough about computers to have a happy SL. Seriously--I had never heard of a video card, didn't know *if* my computer had one, never mind what kind or how to find out what kind. I hadn't played a computer game (not that I'm saying SL is a only game, but a lot of its skills and vocabulary come from gaming) since a few unsuccessful attempts at keeping a suicidal Q-Bert alive--good lord!--twenty years or so ago. I have learned a tremendous amount in the last several months. SL has a pretty steep learning curve for those of us who are non-techies.

I came to SL maybe a month after getting my 1st computer. I honestly didn't know what a url was, much less a surl, so I know exactly what you mean.

Also, the kindness of perfect strangers. You can see that once you take away fear (of being robbed, attacked, etc) most people _do_ want to help their neighbours, no matter what nationality or background. It's something I've always believed, but it's been wonderful to have it confirmed.

And I can't believe I gave credit in the same paragraph to: "out of the mouth of babes" and a lawyer! OMG what have I done.

Wel, we can be robbed an attacked in different ways, of course -- but ya, I agree. I have found that the majority of people in our world are happy to share their creations, their stories, an their lives, an do it more than one might ever tink of doin in RL.

Many of us spend a lifetime building defenses. I know I have… but, in RL, I found that all the defenses in the world won’t protect your heart when the really bad stuff happens, and the wall around your heart can be impenetrable to sweetness as well as pain.

My experiences in SL are helping me dismantle the walls, brick by brick, the shyness, the self-conscious fear, the prickly independence. Has it hurt sometimes? Yes. Has it been indescribably sweet as well? Yes. Joy and pain are two sides of the same coin. I’ve stopped labeling my experiences… Saying , oh this is experience is good, this experience is bad. It all just is.

Pixel life, real life, the people are all real, and are what makes both lives worth living.

My biggest learnings have been about myself... about how I can relate to other people at a deeper level than I thought possible for such a limited medium. It feels good to be surprised by things, people, situations again - to put the cynic mask away... I learned that if I let myself I can feel things that I thought I would not feel again.

I've learned that no matter how long you live in the same place on the old mainland, when the typical age of your neighbors is 2003 - 2005, you won't be picking up any extra primland any time soon :(

The biggest thing though, would have to be that people you never imagined becoming best friends with somehow wind up being the ones who know you best, even if they're not your favorite persons. The multitude of great people and the chance to meet them here is a wonderful thing.

What have I learned from SL?

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is an elephant in disguise.

That is so sweet...and so true.

/me hands Trout a big plate of warm toll house cookies with pecans.

I've also learned that if you speak from the heart, you get cookies. I love positive reinforcement!

/me looks around furtively.

I'm not supposed to do this, but.......... (sorry, hun, have to answer this one)

I've learned that SL is a great world filled with wonderful creativity and can be a fun "escape". However, the biggest thing I learned is that nothing and no one in it can even come close to comparing to my RL and what I have with my husband and children. I also learned exactly how much my husband means to me and how much I mean to him (he knows what i mean). No matter what else happens, I'll always be grateful that SL taught me that.

/me scampers off again.

I learned a few things:

1. when you finally have some spare time in rl and wanne relax playing sl ---- > logins disabled
2. when your in the mood for going shopping ---- > money transfer denied because the requist was stale
3. when you wanne do some exploring --- > could not teleport in timely fashion
4. when you wanne start a goupIM or read one ----> error messaging chat session with... error making request please try again later
5. my friendslist is over 300 people and still not full, strange that i can have that and only 25 groups

Lol why am i still in sl, well its fun to

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

I learned that a 9 foot tall humanoid black fox with animated swirly eyes, smoke coming out of it's nostrils, spikes, horns, a 3 foot long uh.....(O_O), uncountable body piercings, spikes, horns, a strappy gimp suit, and drool dripping from a gag-ball can consider a 10 year old kid to be "weird".
