I read once about some people who collect model buses who sometimes 'hire out' vehicles to other collectors to help them through busy periods!! We SLers are not alone in immersiveness!

If I don't crash(Like I just did) I just X out after saying any goodbyes. I login at my home the next time, and change clothes or whatever.

I do similarly - when I first joined SL, I always used to TP home before log-off, but I don't bother much anymore. I do try and remember to empty the trash though.

For a long time, my partner and I went to bed together. Cuddeled up, said goodnight and logged off together. On the days when we could not be together for our routine it felt so lonely.

But then I did something stupid.

Now, I go back home to room with no windows, impale myself on a spike and just walk away. It logs me out after awhile I suppose.

Wow and they say Anton Chekov and Franz Kafka are dead ...

Well, it's Friday, so I figured I'd ask a trivial question, but it's one that I've been thinking about. When I'm ready to log off, I tp back to my home location, check that I'm dressed, nothing weird attached, sit in the exact same chair every time, and then maybe do a quick scan to make sure everything is squared away in inventory, no open IM's, etc. and log off.

I have friends who just say goodbye and log off, regardless of where they are or what they're wearing.

Am I just being anal? For some reason, I see it like going to bed in RL - check the locks, turn out lights, brush teeth, etc...I know when I log on, I won't be sitting in the chair because it doesn't work like that, but it's a habit.

So, two part question - am I out of line and what do you do when you hang it up for the night?

I used to do that in TSO, and sometimes put on my pajamas and got into bed first.

In SL I just log off, though.

I don't think this is nutty at all. I've spoken with others about this phenomenon that I've noticed in SL. There are certain things that you can do that are so immersive that you actually get a physical reaction to them. A lot are intimate types of things, but a lot have to do with relaxing. I swear, I've felt someone's hand on my arm when they caress me in SL, and when I settle down into a big chair in front of a fire in SL, there's a sense of relaxation that washes over me in RL. It's WEIRD. I can feel someone in my arms when we dance, etc. I have no explanation for it, but I know I'm not alone, because other people have told me that they get the exact same reaction. I can see where a soak in a hot tub for your avatar would help relax you in RL, although, maybe not as much as a soak in a nice hot jacuzzi tub in RL would.

Trout, I am right there with you, man! Maybe since we live in our imagination in SL (and perhaps in RL?? lol), that's why we experience the physical reactions too. For instance, right now, I'm lazily swinging in a hammock on the deck. Lovely day...I swear I can feel the breeze!

The brain...it's an amazing tool!

Out of line? Heavens no, it's your world, your imagination after all!

But, have you mentioned this to your therapist? Perhaps it might shed some light on your issues, such as why you feel the need to solicit pictures of slutty female avatars to rate ... ;)

To answer your other question: I'm like Collette -- unless I'm in a situation where I don't want to reappear, I simply quit. After all, when I go to bed in RL, I don't lay out my clothing for tomorrow.

What would the affects be on Second Life if our avatars never vanished?

Assume everyone that registered still had an avatar, so eleven million avatars.

Most of the people behind them are gone, so if they have land in their name still, I guess their avatar would be on their land.

If the people are gone and have no land, their avatar would have to be on someone else's land. You might need to be able to bury it. Or maybe you'd get to have the ability to move a dead avatar if it is on your land. Dead avatars could be treated as objects by landonwers, and folks would use them for furniture or building material, or for, umm, playthings. If you didn't want your avatar being treated with such disrepect, you'd have to arrange to have it buried, or put on display, or stored in a cryogenic storage facility in case you returned to SL.

Perhaps dead avatars, after say a month of staying wherever they were when their operators last used SL, would come back as NPC zombies, wandering the terrain in search of whatever it is that zombies want, brains, cool zomby duds, or what have you.

If your avatar stayed here all the time, if you left it on your land, and left your land accesible and buildable and such, people would do all sorts of disrepectful things to it, so some folks would change their settings to keep people out of where their avatars are and not allow scripts and building where their avatars are when they aren't online.

This is not a feature suggestion, just a thought.

Happy Rez Day Suzanne. *raises a glass to you* Here's to the next four.

Love the idea of undead avatars with lampshades on their heads doubling as lamps in people's homes. Glad we dont have Smellivision though, it would get a bit ripe...

love

You may be pixels, but I swear imogen has a soul.

I TP home, sigh happily at being Monarch of all I Survey, wish I surveyed quite so much in RL, look at the clock and try to think of a good reason I shouldnt go to my RL bed, and then quit, wishing I had left enough time for REM sleep so I could dream of my SL life.

Sad, or what?

i love this idea ... more thots ....

--- you could zombie-enable your land, so that zombies were or were not allowed
--- as a zombie, you "rot" steadily until, after 6 months, nothing is left and your account is deleted. any mainland you own is abandoned immediately, any island land reverts to prev owner or to your "beneficiary"
--- when you create an account, you can designate a beneficiary account to get all your stuff in the event that you go zombie and rot
--- zombies can be commanded to do a limited number of things by any passerby who knows how. harmless things. chicken dance.
--- if you give a zombie something, it performs an eating animation and then comes after you with teeth bared. it chases you for 20 seconds. if it catches you it nibbles on your neck happily for a few seconds while purring, then poofs elsewhere.

Love the idea of undead avatars with lampshades on their heads doubling as lamps in people's homes.

Hmm, maybe this could be worked into a way to motivate people to go premium.

Dead, never premium avatars get no respect. Formerly premium avatars get a bit better treatement.

LL could put up ads like: "Go premium or if your ever leave we'll disrespect your avatar's corpse!"

Thanks for the kind words.

We'll need some new LSL functions...

llStartAnimateZombie(key id, string animation) and llStopAnimateZombie(key id) to make them dance or pose them as furniture.

llTossZombie(key id, vector direction, float force) for those games of zombie badminton.

llDesecrateCorpse(key id, list desecrations) this function can only be used in mature sims, and possibly only by age verified accounts.

llDecorateZombie(key id, key inventory_clothes) to dress them in funny outfits.

llAttachToZombie(key id, key inventory_object, integer attachment_point) to attach lampshades to their heads, put wheels on their feet, and so on.

There'll be some other functions, and probably some zombie-base events too, but this is enough to get started.

For the night? By the time I quit it's far too close to dawn to call it night. ;)

I usually teleport home, but if I'm in a hurry, I'll quit wherever...

but if other people are present, quite often I'll use a silly macro that emits a giddy WHEEEE! sound and does a backflip.

I'll quit midway through the backflip...

It makes the login image look very silly. :)

I foresee a whole new notecard at Ivory Tower - Zombie Prim building.

There will be Zombie Building classes at NCI, and competitions for "Most creative use of a Zombie", "Creative Cadaver Skills" classes, and it brings a whole new meaning to prim torture... the mind boggles.

How many Zombies do you need to change a lightbulb?

Who Cares, they only come out in the dark.

I really wish 'avatar' were a prim type we could create and pose without having to go through the bother of setting up sculpties.

It'd be nice to have an online/offfline detector that, when you were offline, showed a verion of youself actually in a bed or something.

Interesting, Trout.

When I first got into SL and had no real "home", I did kind of wonder what happened to the avatar after I logged out. Sort of the "light in the refigerator" question...<grin>

Now that I have a "home", I do have a ritual. If I am out and about somewhere - I go home, check the store and grounds for loose foreign objects, head inside, strip to boxers, and sit down in a chair, and check through inventory...then log out. If I have been at home building, I still go through all of the above steps, but also make sure that everything I have been working with is locked.

If my master and I have been out on the town, we usually TP home to say goodnight and hug before logging. If we are already at home either just cuddling or post-coital, we'll emote falling asleep after saying goodnight.

I have ended up naked in an info-hub when our sim was unavailable one day after a wonderful night before. I admit to it being a little traumatic but I still take the chance.

It's been fun reading what other people do. Great post, Trout.
