IMAX 3D FTW

It was well worth a day off and $10. I'll be going again. So who's creating the sim? I want in! Especially with glow turned on!

Hmm I just noticed this page on one of the official SL web pages: http://secondlife.com/whatis/avatar/

From: someone

What is an Avatar?

You may have heard the term "avatar" from friends, on the Web or in the news. For example, there's the James Cameron-directed movie "Avatar" and a popular animated TV show "Avatar: The Last Airbender." But, what exactly is an avatar in Second Life? In a virtual world, an avatar is a digital persona that you can create and customize. It's you — only in 3D. You can create an avatar that resembles your real life or create an alternate identity. The only limit is your imagination. Who do you want to be? Create your avatar in Second Life by signing up now »

Had one of those LOL moments tonight when watching tv and saw and ad tie-in for Avatar with McDonalds. Apparently no one at the mega-corp's ad firm knew the film was a cautionary tale about the wholesale destruction of native land for, oh, I don't know beef production perhaps?

I thought Avatar was a beautiful movie..and a few posts back i had said something about the natives reminding me of Native Americans..

I meant that as in it felt good to that they used a lot of things from Native americans..and then found out the language was built from natives from places all around the world..that some things were in commmon..
i love stories where they show nature and how all thinks relate to each other in one big harmony..I thought this movie really showed a big connection in it's forest..a movie hasn't really felt so good in a long time..

so thismorning i am reading the news on my home page at my isp and see this article which really pisses me off..it attacks a lot of the things i found that were great in the movie..

to me it's a beautiful movie and to me these people are trying to taint something beautiful..
just pisses me off to no end ..it also shows you can't have anything beautiful without someone coming along trying to chop it up..

anyways here is the article..

http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/hmg-avatar-hidden-messages.html

for those that can't see the hyperlinks

nothing has meaning without reference, and the plot does have those elements, I think the comparison that bothered me the most was to "white guilt fantasy" in the same vein as dances with wolves (basic rundown, white guy is pitted against native, white guy goes native, white guy becomes some sort of leader and saves the day)

and there's some truth in that, but I think it's ridiculous to trivialize it to that level, which ignores the message in favor of the details. I read it as member of dominant imperial force realizes their way isn't the only way, and uses their knowledge of their own force to preserve something they realize is worthwhile, proving that people can learn and change. but what do I know.

The movie was, is and always will be beautiful, compelling and a real mind worker.

I have a NA'VI avatar made by someone on Xstreet, for some reason I can't find it anymore so I'm glad I got it while it was available.

Yup...

...and yup.

Isn't that what SL is all about? - "Your world, someone else's imagination".

Ah haha! Ah yeah. :) Sometimes I feel despair looking at how far along y'all are in terms of scripting and sculpties. I've barely got it down on paper. Somebody's built it. ;)

Or filmed it. Flying cats speaking their own made-up language living in a world where glowing sea anemones wave under giant trees? Damn, why didn't I move a little faster when I was ten?

I'm glad you figured out the underlying meaning in my sarcasm.

It's really not an external problem - limiting one's imagination - It's an internal problem. James Cameron has said in interviews that nature has far more (almost limitless) variety and strangeness than he can come up with, and that he gets his inspiration from nature (i.e. the bioluminescent life forms where inspired by his experience on deep sea dives). One thing he certainly doesn't do is recycle ideas from films by George Lucas or Tim Burton, nor do he or they confine their vision to creating things from other people's films or video games, unless they've been contracted to do so (I can't think of any examples, except sequels). They pretty much get their inspiration through their experience with nature, and build upon it.

There are no rules written into the SL TOS that say our imagination must be restricted. In fact we are encouraged by the SL TOS to be creative. Unfortunately, this is a hard thing for some people to do. It's tempting to take someone else's idea and run with it, especially if it's profitable. This is risky because the SL TOS does not encourage this kind of behavior, and there are consequences. I'm guessing the creators of the blue Avatar aliens that no longer exist on Xstreet took a risk that didn't pay off for them.

I learned awhile back to avoid blogs, bloggers, most forums, people who make their living by or just enjoy tearing apart other people, or those who for whatever reason want to push their lame agenda on other people.

I read that article and it irritated me, too, in the same way it did you.

I saw Avatar yesterday. Very cool. The use of motion capture has moved way beyond what Peter Jackson accomplished with Gollum in LOTR, as has scale/character size/perspective. The plot is nothing new: corrupt corporations using and abusing all they come in contact with for the mighty $. That said - the graphics, effects and 3D effect are awesome. Well worth a look in 3D if you can. Cameron has created a very pretty world, and the lead female (Neytiri) kicks major arse. The girl rocks.

While watching I couldn't help thinking how our lives would be if we could enter SL via the same means used by the avatar 'drivers' in the movie.

i loved this movie too. they made good use of the black light effects and i especially loved the purples and greens with it. i did not see the 3D version, but i bet it's great. some years ago i watched an animated version of this plot, a musical entitled Fern Gully. throughout the Avatar movie i kept expecting one of the creatures to break into song (Robin Williams was the voice for Batty in Fern Gully, and his intro song is catchy and cute).

The name is Batty, the logic is irratic..

Anyways, yes it was kind of a done out plot, but I didn't enjoy it any less. :)

I saw it Christmas day.

I liked it a lot.

OK, so maybe it was an old plot and somewhat preachy. But right now it is arguably the most technologically advanced movie out there. It managed to cross the uncanny divide. And most of the science (arguably) holds up.

My anti-geek daughter wanted to see Sherlock Holmes but got voted down. She loved avatar too.

Great CGI. Otherwise a waste of a movie. I accurately predicted the entire plot in the first ten minutes, and could identify which characters would live or die as they were introduced. So much money, such great technology, and a story that is barely above the most recent Star Wars trilogy in originality.

Alice In Wonderland trailer was the best part of the experience.

Wonderful. Starting in March Disney will establish copyright over characters from a book published in 1865. I.e.; Lindens are too stupid to understand these concepts so they will be taking down every instance of Alice, Mad Hatter, etc. that they can find.

I finally got to see it in 3D after an hour and a half drive to the Cinema.
Loved it and would have turned round to see it a second time if my wife hadn't pulled me away.
