Dont feel bad.

I still have MANY VHS movies that can NOT be found on DVD or Blu-Ray. Mostly older 70's stuff.

Well i used to believe Bluray was all hype, but i finally watched a BluRay movie and the resolution was pretty incredible.

Im just waiting until the prices of the players come down to something reasonable.

I still use regular dvds as well. When my dvd player gives out is when I will move up. When I bought my big screen, the guy tried really hard to sell me a BluRay player, but I'm not the type who buys something just because it's the latest and greatest. While I have given up on VHS tapes, I still use cd's for music.

I've looked into the movie a bit more, figuring I might want to see it on my vacation, but I'll wait for it to come on cable. It does look like a marvelous technical work, but I've never been one to get too excited by that stuff. The story seems somewhat derivative, I get the idea the story was written around the effects, as oppsed to the effects being complimentary to a story. My holiday movies will probably be Sherlock Holmes and Invictus.

20th Century Fox owns IP rights to blue avatars now?

I don't think so.

Just be glad Disney didn't produce the movie...then they would be coming after the Blue people in SL.

If one were to produce an SL avatar with the intention of making it look as much as possible like one of the blue Avatar aliens, then one would be treading on very thin ice.

The movies are a problem, too. Two or three times as much as the DVD is a deal breaker.

They are bright blue like a crayon. And their eyes are too widely spaced.

Probably due to too many fermented berries consumed by their mothers while they were in the womb.

But, JFC!!! 400 million dollars?!

Tis madness.

Soon the credits will be longer than the movie.

Yup...

Isn't that what SL is all about? - "Your world, someone else's imagination".

I have not seen Avatar. But from what I've seen of the trailers, this is my take on it:

World of Warcraft.

I really hope the movie does not create an influx of new blood in SL, because they're going to be coming here expecting SL to be all about combat. Combat has its place, in the right sims, but Avatar really seems to focus exclusively, or nearly so, on the idea of using avatars in combat roles.

Not something we really need people to be coming to SL looking for more of the same, that's what WoW and their ilk are for.

i will wait for dvd release

Isn't that like saying I will wait until Cold Play release their material on mono?

From what I have heard (and seen in the 20min trailer), a big part of the wow factor of Avatar is the incredible next level up 3D experience you will get in the special 3D-equipped digital cinemas (with those new digital 3D Barco projectors).

List of suitably equipped cinemas is here:

http://www.eyeofdubai.com/v1/extlnk/lnkframe.htm?http%3A//www.dolby.com/consumer/motion_picture/ddcinemas/index.html

As for any rub-off on SL, it is simply the gazillion Google hits on the word 'Avatar' that might steer some traffic to 'what's that site then, called Second Life?', about two-thirds of the way down the hits on page 1.

I'll just be happy if the movie popularizes the term.... I've always despised in other games the use of the word "toon" to describe a character.

Since the movie does not actually open till this Friday, then yes, you have not seen it, nor has anyone else but a few invited movie reviewers and such.

Of course, and I'm not one of them. But the trailer looks far too aimed at combat simulations involving the avatars in question. I've got a bad feeling about the potential influx of people into SL that *might* be generated from watching it. So since this was after all practically an open request for opinions, I stated mine.

Well, these days computer games are bigger dollars than movie box office, and they *already* have a tie-in game out for play. So the people who like to blow things up in games will be happy. What makes this movie interesting for the SL crowd is it includes a remotely operated avatar as part of the plot.

When I google "Where can I get an avatar", SL is the first result.

Just saw it in 3D.

I give it two thumbs up.

I'll give a third thumb up for their newly formatted end credits, which significantly shortened the time it took to list the 5,000 people who spent the last three years of their life working on this project.

Saw Avatar in 3-d today, in one word, Magical! Much better then the reviews suggested. Yes there are battle scenes and cliches, but the beauty of this fantastic world, and the imagination and feeling that went into it are its strongest elements.
